Chapter 105: Does Pidgeot Want to Return to Pidgeot Island?
Chapter 105: Does Pidgeot Want to Return to Pidgeot Island?
It was the spring of 198 in the Pokemon League calendar, March 14th to be precise. This was the last month of spring, soon to be followed by the sweltering summer heat.
Naoki despised the feeling of being drenched in sweat, so on this particular morning, he set out on his Motostoke to Poke Mart in Chestic Town, intending to purchase a few air conditioners with the money he had saved up over the past few days.
He rode his trusty Motostoke to the department store in town and, with the assistance of a salesperson, made his way to the floor that sold appliances.
There, he selected four air conditioning units, one each for Saltrock's salt house, the Pokemon cottage where Milktank resided, the chicken coop, and his own wooden cabin.
In an instant, his wallet was twelve thousand Pokemon League dollars lighter—earnings accumulated over the past half month from selling crops, rock salt, and milk.
Despite mentally preparing himself for the expense, Naoki still winced at the sight of his now-empty wallet. But there was no other option; these appliances were necessities to make it through the summer comfortably.
The salesperson was visibly surprised by Naoki's bulk purchase but promptly arranged for the units to be installed.
With the installation complete, Naoki breathed a sigh of relief. Now, he wouldn't have to endure sweltering nights during the summer!
Thanks to the addition of Milktank and its milk, the ranch's financial woes were a thing of the past, and the ranch officially entered a new phase of revitalization.
During this phase, Naoki had two main goals in mind.
First, he wanted to expand and renovate his living quarters, transforming it into a proper home with all the essential amenities: a bedroom, a living room, a cellar, a study, and a bathroom.
The bedroom would be for rest, the living room for the occasional guest visiting the ranch, and the study for bookkeeping, reading, and recipe experimentation.
As for the cellar...
In just two weeks, summer would arrive, and it would be time to begin cultivating hops for beer. Without a cellar, his brewing ambitions would remain unrealized.
Additionally, he would need to set aside funds to purchase barrels for the brewing process.
Naoki's second goal was to plant more summer crops and use them to create innovative new dishes. He intended to strengthen the Pokemon on the ranch with these culinary creations, creating a positive cycle.
At noon, Naoki began preparing lunch for the Pokemon under his care.
He opened the refrigerator, his eyes scanning the abundant ingredients within, and his gaze eventually landed on a jar of golden, viscous liquid.
Immediately, information about the contents of the jar appeared in his mind.
[Tulip Honey: Honey crafted from the pollen and nectar of tulips, imparting a subtle floral fragrance to those who savor it. An exceptional ingredient for creating delectable desserts.]
This was the honey that Combee had collected from the flower fields in recent days.
When Naoki first witnessed the Combee collecting the nectar, he was taken aback. He recalled that tulips contained sugars toxic to bees, and in other worlds, bees that foraged on tulip flowers would perish.
However, the resilience of Pokemon far exceeded that of regular bees.
Although they shared the name "bee," the nectar of tulips held no danger for Combee. Relieved, Naoki allowed them to continue their collection.
"It's a shame Bear left so early," Naoki thought. "If only she could have stayed a few more days to taste this new variety of honey."
He had used this honey to make Lucky Pudding, but unfortunately, despite his efforts, he hadn't been able to recreate the permanent luck-enhancing effect.
Nonetheless, Naoki remained undeterred. To him, whether the effect was permanent or not didn't matter. As long as he remained on the ranch, he could eat a pudding whenever he wanted a lucky boost. Consuming them regularly would essentially round up to a permanent effect anyway.
"I wonder where Bear and Mew are now," he mused, pushing aside his concerns for the time being.
Naoki began preparing lunch for Garchomp and the others, opting for the usual menu of grilled meat patties, sandwiches, cucumber salad, and a glass of their preferred tree fruit juice or MooMoo Milk.
As they sat down to eat, Naoki's gaze fell upon Pidgeot, and he realized it had been a while since he last checked on its training progress. "By the way," he asked casually, "have you fully mastered the Electric-type move Thunder that I taught you?"
Not only that, but it had also successfully mastered the combination of moves that Naoki had taught it before: Rain Dance, followed by Hurricane and Thunder!
"Huh?" Naoki was surprised to see this and exclaimed, "You've improved pretty fast!"
"Roaar~"
After finishing their meal, Noivern dragged Naoki outside with its large claws to showcase the progress it had made during this period.
Naoki stood under the eaves with Gorebyss and Motostoke on either side of him.
Noivern flapped its wings and flew into the sky.
It focused its breath, and the originally clear sky was instantly covered by thick, dense clouds, with strands of Electric-type energy swirling within.
The rain started to pour.
At first, it was a light drizzle, but gradually, the rain intensified, connecting into lines as it fell with a loud patter.
Noivern bathed in the heavy rain, its body glistening with rainwater, and its eyes seemed to have flames dancing within.
The next second, Noivern flapped its wings again, and a gust of wind condensed and formed a terrifying hurricane mixed with the pouring rain.
Naoki watched this spectacular display.
If an ordinary Pokemon were to face this move without special environmental training, they would likely be thrown into a panicked frenzy.
At that moment—
A loud thunderclap reverberated.
A shimmering bolt of lightning struck down from the thundercloud, blasting a large pit into the lawn below.
"Whoa!" Naoki inhaled sharply, taken aback by the sheer power.
If a Pokemon were to be hit by that move... he couldn't even begin to imagine the consequences.
The storm subsided, and the looming clouds above gradually dissipated, revealing the clear blue sky once more.
"Clap, clap, clap!"
Naoki immediately applauded, praising, "That was amazing!"
"Roaar..."
Hearing this, Noivern landed next to Naoki, looking a little embarrassed, and scratched its head with its large claw.
It still had a long way to go! Noivern's mind suddenly recalled the mysterious Pokemon it had seen that day above the eye of the typhoon—a pitch-black figure resembling a swimming dragon.
Looking at the transformed Noivern before him, Naoki couldn't help but feel touched.
Agility, Dragon Tail, Thunder Punch, Hurricane, Swift, Dragon Dance, Rain Dance, Thunder, and Thunderbolt.
Unknowingly, Noivern had learned so many moves.
Naoki felt that he didn't have much left to teach it.
With this thought, Naoki asked, "Now that you've learned so many moves, what do you plan to do next?"
Upon hearing this, Noivern immediately panicked.
Because, from what it understood, Naoki seemed to be saying that he had nothing more to teach it and that it had already learned all it could from him.
Was he trying to drive it away? Noivern didn't want to leave, and its eyebrows furrowed in a pitiful expression as it whined, "Roaar..."
Although humans and Pokemon couldn't communicate verbally, Naoki miraculously understood Noivern's intention at that moment.
He found himself in a mix of laughter and tears, "I'm not trying to make you leave. I just wanted to ask about your plans, as I feel that soon, I won't have anything else to teach you. So, when that time comes, will you leave the ranch and return to Noivern Island?"
Naoki hadn't forgotten that Noivern had initially followed him to learn moves.
Hearing this, Noivern fell into deep thought.
In the beginning, it was indeed because it wanted to learn moves that it followed Naoki.
But later...
Naoki had given it the fruit platter, helping it learn Agility.
Naoki had asked Gorebyss to teach it Dragon Tail.
Naoki had accompanied it through the rain to practice Thunder Punch and Rain Dance, even catching a cold in the process.
And because it had worried about Naoki, it had learned Swift on its own while delivering milk.
At this moment, Noivern didn't want to stay by Naoki's side just to become stronger.
—It liked this human and wanted to be with him always.
