Chapter 1047: Go With the Flow
Chapter 1047: Go With the Flow
“Aaaah—”
A nameless Guard fell off the stage, his eyes filled with utter confusion, a stark contrast to the confidence he had when he stepped up.
“You won,” Youxuan said with a chuckle. “Thanks for the guidance, that was a fun Duel.”
Guard: “.”
Fun?
Let's recap what just happened.
The opponent started with "Mischievous Twin Demons", discarding two cards from his hand. Then, the Guard's card was discarded again. Next, the opponent Normal Summoned Iron Knight Kia, equipped Thief's Smoke Jade, and the Smoke Jade was destroyed by Iron Knight's effect, causing the opponent to discard another card.
Then it was the Guard's turn. During the Draw Phase, the opponent activated a Cover Card, forcing the Guard to discard the card he just drew. In the Standby Phase, the opponent set a Trap, "Weapon Summon", and equipped a second Thief's Smoke Jade to Iron Knight, which was then destroyed, causing the Guard to discard yet another card.
The Duel had just begun, and the nameless Guard found himself looking at his empty hands, a giant question mark above his head.
Huh?
What the hell? Where are my cards? Six cards, all gone?
The first match ended in the Guard's confusion, taking no more than two minutes. It was pretty quick.
Ignoring the Guard who had lost his dream, Youxuan jumped off the stage and quickly headed to the next Duel.
Sure enough, even in this new world, Duels were still just as enjoyable.
“.”
Youxuan quickly earned a batch of cards, including a few valuable rare cards, which he sold for cash. Then he went to a card shop and casually opened a few packs to try his luck.
He actually managed to open a fairly well-known Synchro Monster.
Scrap Warrior.
A key monster from the early deck of Yusei Fudo, the third-generation protagonist. A pretty iconic creature.
Not only that, but he also got a few "Synchro Tuners", which were part of Yusei's deck.
Youxuan was initially surprised, but then he quickly understood.
In GX, Jaden Yuki's Hero deck was described by Professor Chronos as a very common and basic deck, typical of a beginner. But in 5D's, Yusei's deck was even more basic.
If Jaden's deck could be called "common", then Yusei's deck should be called "poor." Yusei grew up in the slums of Satellite, and most of his deck was made up of cards he scavenged from the trash.
Apart from the rare Stardust Dragon, which was his destined ace and came to him on its own, most of his deck consisted of the most common cards. It wasn't surprising to open a few Synchro Tuners from a card pack.
After opening a few packs, Youxuan immediately returned to the Duel arena to continue earning cards. He quickly won a few more matches.
When he first arrived, he quickly gained a notorious reputation in a venue, and all the Duelists in the area remembered him. Now, with experience, he knew that it wouldn't take more than a couple of days for his reputation to spread, and other Duelists would avoid him like the plague. When that happened, he'd need to move to a new place to continue earning cards efficiently.
For now, he decided to take advantage of his anonymity and earn as much as he could.
After several more matches, Youxuan stepped back onto the stage and suddenly saw a familiar face.
“Bro, it's him!”
The first Guard he defeated seemed to have called for backup. A large, muscular man with dark skin followed him to the stage and looked at Youxuan with a puzzled expression. “This kid? He doesn't look very strong.”
“Trust me, bro, this kid is evil!” the Guard said. “He won my rare cards!”
“Is that so? Interesting.”
The large man stepped onto the stage, rubbing his hands together with a grin.
"Kid, you’re lucky. I was just looking for someone to test my skills today."
The Security Guard, emboldened by the support, added, "Big Brother Ox-Tail is our strongest Duelist in the pursuit squad. You’re finished!"
Youxuan’s expression showed genuine interest.
Big Brother Ox-Tail has come out of retirement. This is serious.
This legendary figure has a storied history, appearing in the very first issue of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! manga. He was the first villain in Yu-Gi-Oh! history, the first person to be punished by the Dark Yu-Gi after the King’s revival in the modern era. This character survived from the Duel Monsters era all the way to the 5D’s period, becoming a Security Pursuit Duelist and constantly harassing Yusei Fudo.
Finally, an opponent who might be a bit more interesting.
"I look forward to learning from you, Big Brother Ox-Tail", Youxuan said politely.
"Duel!" they both declared.
[Youxuan, LP 4000]
[Ox-Tail, LP 4000]
The most popular format of dueling in this era is the Riding Duel, where both players ride D-Wheels while dueling. However, Youxuan, being new to this world, doesn’t have a D-Wheel. Although he had used Paradox’s D-Wheel to travel through time, it was too conspicuous and could attract unwanted attention, so he decided not to bring it along.
For now, he’s sticking to the traditional stand-up duel.
"I place a monster in Defense Position and set a card. My turn ends", Youxuan said.
"My turn, Draw!"
Ox-Tail slapped down a monster card.
"I summon Assault Gun Dog in Attack Position!"
A fierce, armored dog emerged from his summoning vortex and landed on the field. The dog’s eyes were a menacing dark red.
[Assault Gun Dog, Attack Power 1200]
"Attack!"
Ox-Tail commanded.
"Assault Gun Dog, attack the face-down monster!"
The dog lunged forward, flipping the face-down card. A black-clad soldier appeared, firing his gun, but the bullets were deftly dodged by the dog. It then bit into the soldier’s wrist, causing the soldier to explode into fragments.
[Doppel Warrior, Defense 800]
"I set a card and end my turn."
Ox-Tail sneered.
"Heh, doesn’t seem like much of a challenge."
Youxuan didn’t get upset; he simply smiled. "My turn, Draw."
He glanced at the card he drew, and a slight smile appeared on his lips.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Since he’s in this era, he might as well experience its unique features.
"I’m about to show you, Mr. Ox-Tail", he said with a smile.
Ox-Tail, confident, replied, "Is that so? Bring it on, let’s see what you’ve got!"
Youxuan said, "I Normal Summon Scrap Tuner!"
The small orange warrior leaped onto the field, making Ox-Tail’s eyebrows shoot up.
The sight of this monster seemed to stir up some unpleasant memories for him.
"When Scrap Tuner is summoned, I can Special Summon two Level 2 or lower monsters from my Graveyard in Defense Position", Youxuan explained. "I Special Summon Doppel Warrior!"
"Then, Level 3, Tuner monster Scrap Tuner!
Level 2, Doppel Warrior!
Synchro Summon!"
[3 + 2 = 5]
"The gathered stars will awaken a new power, becoming a shining path! Synchro Summon—
—Level 5, Scrap Warrior!"
Ox-Tail gasped.
