Chapter 104: The Written Records
Chapter 104: The Written Records
Lin Sai couldn't take his eyes off Somjin as he left.
To be honest, he didn't expect Somjin to give up on persuading him so easily.
After all, from Lin Sai's understanding, Somjin and the others seemed to have made up their minds.
They were even convincing other townspeople to join them to increase their strength. As people who wanted to take a risk, they wouldn't miss any opportunity to enhance their chances of success.
Before long, Somjin's figure disappeared from the town's streets.
Lin Sai shook his head slightly and returned to his wooden house.
He remembered Xuan Cao, who had been hungry all day, and quickly found some food to feed the little one in the chicken coop. Only then did he stretch his body and settle down to prepare his dinner.
Twenty minutes later.
The savory, oil-dripping grilled meat was ready on Lin Sai's table.
By the time this dinner was finished, the sky began to darken.
Lin Sai was about to go to the study and light a candle, as usual, to continue reading the materials, just like always.
But with his newly unlocked ability, the situation was different.
Lin Sai took out the materials and, after some operations, crafted an oil lamp on the crafting table. He then strengthened it through resource optimization, causing the lamp to emit a continuous and stable glow.
The optimized item didn't have the unpleasant smell of burning.
Its unique placement ability allowed it to almost stick to the table without the risk of a fire if it tipped over.
Unless, of course, the essence within was consumed after a month.
Otherwise, its effect could be maintained in an optimal state without any supervision.
Under the perfect illumination of the oil lamp, Lin Sai's gaze fell upon the bookshelf.
"The Dragon Beast, to deal with the Dragon Beast..."
Lin Sai first consulted the 'Frontier Yearbook'.
He had previously seen 'Yearbook Six', which described the emergence of the Dragon Beast and its approximate physical state.
"The subsequent information will definitely not be in the first five volumes."
Lin Sai muttered softly, quickly finding the later yearbooks he needed.
He flipped through them in order.
In 'Frontier Yearbook Eight', he found a new section about the Dragon Beast.
'Yearbook Eight'.
This was also the first yearbook compiled by Finn after inheriting the task.
Lin Sai gently caressed the text and gazed at the words left by his former teacher, reciting softly:
"Ein has set out.
This six-stage Great Messenger from Starpoint City is prepared to venture into the Black Mountain World, attempt to communicate with the Dragon Beast, and use his powerful Art of Persuasion to conquer it, reopening the external passages of the Hidden Frontier.
Half a year later, Ein's will was brought back by his raven.
The powerful messenger said:
[The Dragon Beast is enveloped by an unreasonable spiritual force, like a mountain that even a six-stage messenger like me struggles to move.
Incredible...
I've encountered numerous wild beasts, and even a seventh-stage individual would never be capable of such a feat mentally.
Ah, it's a pity I can't return.
I can't deliver this message in person; the dense forest at the foot of the mountain is where I'll rest forever...]"
The brief text described a gruesome reality.
Once, a six-stage messenger had the misfortune of being lost before the Dragon Beast.
Over the three years in the Hidden Frontier, Lin Sai had learned a lot about Awakeners, including Messengers.
These Awakened individuals travel between worlds, delivering messages and items for people. The primary world for training Messengers is centered around a place called Starpoint City.
Messengers, in general, possess rather peculiar powers.
In their first stage, they can communicate simply with animals, and later awaken a friendly aura, ensuring they are spared from the hostility of wild animals.
By the fifth stage, they become Transcenders.
They can even converse with the wilderness itself, guaranteeing their survival in any situation.
But if it's the sixth stage recorded in the Yearbooks...
Messengers at this stage can wield an incredibly powerful power of words, interfering with or forcefully controlling the will of other life forms.
As a long-term messenger traveling between worlds and even through desolate, uninhabited lands, this is almost their foundation.
When dealing with powerful beastfolk, they might not be able to make the beasts commit suicide, but typically, ensuring their own safety is not an issue.
"But this sixth-stage messenger died."
Lin Sai muttered softly, furrowing her brows.
The dragon beast's spirit is protected by a special power, and even a sixth-stage messenger couldn't protect themselves from this threat.
This indirectly reminds us of one thing.
To deal with the dragon beast, if one chooses to exert effort in mental manipulation, it might not be very effective.
"But the good news is, whether through mental or physical means, I couldn't defeat the dragon beast."
"At least I don't have to worry about that for now."
Lin Sai shrugged, making a playful remark to herself.
She quickly adjusted her mindset and began rereading the other Yearbooks in front of her.
Unfortunately, in the subsequent Yearbooks, there was almost no further mention of the dragon beast.
Even if there were a few brief sentences, they only stated when and who went to Black Mountain, and in the end, there was no news of them.
After the sixth-stage messenger's death by the dragon beast, even if brave Awakeners challenged this powerful creature, they didn't even have a pet like a raven to send back news to the Frontier Town.
"If there's no news about the dragon beast, let's see if there's anything worth noting in the Hidden Frontier."
Lin Sai changed her search strategy.
She flipped through the "Expedition Map Draft" booklet written by Saka, one of the original expedition team members, which also included some simple records and some basic maps of their journey.
Although this map draft focuses only on the expedition team's route, the author obviously paid great attention to the journey's experiences.
It records encounters and knowledge in great detail, including animals, plants, terrain, and other factors.
In the "Expedition Map Draft," Saka vividly describes her experiences and understanding, accompanied by some hand-drawn pictures.
While ensuring information density, it also has strong readability.
"Even if you don't consider it as a reference, it's a great and interesting popular science read."
Lin Sai sighed, then flipped to the last page of the "Expedition Map Draft."
This part records the expedition team's activities in the Hidden Frontier.
Although it's only four pages, Lin Sai still found an interesting record.
"Beside the river we named the Marlau River, there's a deep and vast rift. Miss Kales could sense the breath of living wind, and there must be a connection to other places beneath.
What secrets does this mysterious rift hide?
If possible, I really want to go down and take a look myself!
Unfortunately, the expedition's journey lies ahead, and I can only hope that someone will arrive here in the future and explore what's below!"
