Chapter 103: Mad Dog Dugarte
Chapter 103: Mad Dog Dugarte
"It's just a temporary loss. I'll play a couple more rounds and win it all back", Dugarte frowned, his eyes fixed on the cards in his hand, completely ignoring the suggestion.
Ivan helplessly shook his head and waited.
Dugarte had said he would play just a couple more rounds, but once the urge took over, he played for a full hour. Fortunately, his luck seemed to turn around, and he managed to win a few times in the middle.
After winning back some money, Dugarte finally stopped after losing another round. He felt that something was off about today's game and decided to leave with Ivan.
"Dugarte, you're not going to play anymore? Just a few more rounds, and you might win it all back", the Goblin Vendor said, juggling a few Galleons with a grin.
"Maybe another time", Dugarte waved his hand dismissively, his expression not very pleasant.
"Really a coward, afraid to lose it all back?"
The Goblin Vendor muttered a few complaints, reaching out to collect the Galleons from the table. But before he could, a large hand grabbed his head and slammed it onto the table.
Bang~
The Round Rosewood Table cracked, and the golden Galleons scattered to the floor. The Goblin's ugly, wrinkled head was bruised and swollen, with blood and snot streaming from his nose.
"Who did you call a coward?" Dugarte seemed to have gone mad, showing no sign of stopping. He slammed the Goblin's head against the wooden table a few more times, then grabbed a nearby hot water pot and poured it over the Goblin.
A piercing scream echoed through the Wizard Market, drawing the attention of the surrounding Wizards. However, no one came to help; maintaining order was the job of the Enforcement Squad.
The two Wizards who had been playing with them were stunned. One of them quickly backed away, clearly not wanting to get involved.
The other, a Green-robed Wizard, reacted by drawing his Wand and pointing it at Dugarte.
However, before he could cast a spell, the overturned cup on the table had somehow transformed into a purple-spotted snake. It bit the Green-robed Wizard's right hand holding the Wand and wrapped its long body around his arm.
"Ah~" The Green-robed Wizard screamed in pain, only then noticing the presence of the eleven- or twelve-year-old Wizard, Ivan. But it was too late.
"Stunning Spell!" Ivan waved his Wand, and the Green-robed Wizard fell to the ground.
Ivan didn't know what had set Dugarte off, but once the fight started, he didn't hesitate. After dealing with this trouble, Ivan held his Wand and watched the other male Wizard who had been playing cards.
He didn't let his success in taking down an adult Wizard go to his head; he had just caught the other off guard.
The other male Wizard raised his hands in surrender, indicating he had no intention of getting involved. He had no connection with the Goblin Vendor and wouldn't join in the fight.
More importantly, the male Wizard thought this pair, one big and one small, was too dangerous for him to handle.
Ivan hadn't expected this reaction but didn't let his guard down, keeping a close eye on the man.
Dugarte glanced over and, seeing that Ivan had taken care of the trouble, turned back to the Goblin. He opened his mouth and pressed his Wand against the Goblin's neck, angrily demanding again.
"Who did you call a coward? Who?"
The Goblin Vendor, whose head was still pressed against the rosewood table, was still confused about why he was being attacked. His mind was a mess, and with several of his teeth knocked out, he stammered.
"I’m the coward."
At that moment, a commotion erupted in the crowd. Ivan looked over and saw a group of neatly dressed Black Robed Wizards rushing over.
"Help!" The Goblin Vendor cried out as if he had seen his savior, but the next second, his head collided with the table corner, and he fainted instantly.
Several Black Robed Wizards looked over and even drew their Wands, clearly targeting Ivan and his companions. Ivan gripped his Wand tightly. At this moment, Douglas vented some of his anger, knocked the Goblin unconscious, and then pulled Ivan closer, casting a spell.
"Phantom Shift"
A barrage of colorful magic rays shot over, but fortunately, Douglas had cast the spell at the perfect moment, and all the spells missed.
Another spatial displacement occurred, and the feeling was no better than using Floo Powder.
When Ivan regained his bearings, he found himself in a dilapidated alley. Trash was piled up around him, and the surrounding houses were in ruins, clearly abandoned for a long time.
Feeling safe, Ivan's anger began to rise. This fight had been utterly senseless, all because that Goblin had called Douglas a coward?
Are you f**king crazy?
Not to mention being chased by a group of Wizards and having to flee in panic—this was just terrible!
Ivan was about to voice his complaint but noticed Douglas's expression suddenly change. He grabbed Ivan's arm and started running.
"We need to go, they have a Magical Item that can track the location of Phantom Shift!"
"Who are these Black Robed Wizards chasing us? Are they from the Ministry of Magic?" Ivan knew it wasn't the time to argue and asked through his anger.
"Of course not, they are some Wizards privately hired by the Wizard Market. Many people call them Enforcers, responsible for maintaining order", Douglas calmed down a bit, though his face still had some red spots from the alcohol, his mind was clear.
After leading Ivan to the nearest dilapidated house, Douglas spoke in a low voice. "You hide inside. I'll deal with them or lead them away. Then you can come out!"
"Can you handle them?" Ivan asked sarcastically, recalling that the Black-robed Enforcers numbered at least five.
"Don’t underestimate me, they’re just a bunch of trash", Douglas grinned, ordered Ivan to hide, and then ran towards the deeper part of the alley.
But how will you wrap things up after the fight? Before Ivan could say anything, Douglas had already run far away.
Seeing the magical rays flashing in the distance, Ivan sighed and glanced at the ruined house behind him. With a leap, he grabbed the protruding bricks and climbed to a high spot, finding a place with cover to watch how Douglas would deal with those black-robed trash.
However,
Ivan covered his face, unable to bear the sight.
Below, Douglas, under the bombardment of spells from five Wizards, had no chance to fight back. He could only scurry around, dodging the attacks.
Occasionally, he managed to cast a spell to hinder the Wizards, but only slightly.
Who was handling whom, exactly?
