Chapter 1023: A Favor
Chapter 1023: A Favor
“Mr. Yugi?”
Hearing the call, the Malik siblings turned their heads, momentarily blinded by the bright light streaming in from the doorway. Instinctively, they raised their arms to shield their eyes. But when the light finally faded and they focused again, there was no sign of Yugi at the door—just an empty space.
Both looked at Yuu in confusion. Yuu didn’t say anything but walked out the door, looking around. There was no trace of the person he thought he had seen, and a few Gravekeepers were staring at the area curiously.
Logically, if someone had been there just now, they wouldn’t have escaped the notice of these Gravekeepers. Yuu had thought he saw Yugi at the door, but it must have been an illusion.
He didn’t seem bothered by this and smiled at the empty space, speaking to himself, “Thank you, Mr. Yugi.”
The others were puzzled. Malik approached and patted Yuu’s shoulder, asking, “Did Yugi Mutou just come here?”
Yuu shook his head. “I don’t know, maybe I just saw wrong.”
With that, he turned and walked back inside. Malik looked around once more, seeing no one, and felt even more confused. He then followed Yuu back into the room.
At that moment, high above, a tall and slender figure stood, looking down at them. A slight smile played on his lips as he murmured, “You’re welcome.”
After the incident, Yuu politely declined the Malik siblings’ generous invitation to stay for a couple more days and left early the next morning.
However, he didn’t head straight back to Duel Academy. Instead, he went to Kaiba Corporation first. Though they had just worked together the day before, he didn’t see President Kaiba today.
When he asked Keihei, he was told that President Kaiba had hurriedly flown abroad to oversee a top-secret development project.
Yuu didn’t press for more details; this was nothing unusual. Seto Kaiba was arguably the world’s leading technological genius, with his influence spanning every field, from biotechnology and aerospace to physics. Whenever a project involved card games, President Kaiba was invariably a key developer, and in this world, everything was somehow related to card games.
However, Yuu wasn’t there to see President Kaiba. He needed to use Kaiba Corporation’s equipment to test the danger level of the three Yeshen Cards he had recently acquired.
Of course, being mystical artifacts, the results could only serve as a reference. They were undoubtedly dangerous, but the tests would help determine if Yuu could control them. When Kaiba Corporation had obtained the Godlike Deity Cards, they had conducted extensive tests and collected a vast amount of data. Over the past decade, technological advancements had been revolutionary, making the current capabilities far superior to what they were back then.
The testing process took about a week. During this time, Yuu also took the opportunity to browse Kaiba Corporation’s card storage, as was his custom.
While it was widely rumored that Kaiba Corporation’s card inventory was unparalleled, the truth was that their stock was constantly changing. Sometimes, rare cards that had been out of circulation for years would reappear and be acquired. Other times, rare cards would be reissued, or new cards would be freshly created and released, or even kept in-house.
Yuu had developed the habit of checking in regularly, and he often found new treasures.
Of course, it wasn’t like he was mooching anymore. Yuu, as the current Duel King, was a person of status and means. He was no longer the penniless newcomer he once was. A few cards were no longer a big deal to him, and it wouldn’t look good to keep taking things for free.
The initial test results for the Yeshen Cards were promising.
It was likely that the three Yeshen were in a sealed state, whereas the Godlike Deity Cards had been at their peak when Kaiba Corporation conducted the tests. The power levels of the Yeshen were vastly different now.
Not to mention, Yeshen, who was already in a sealed state, suffered a severe beating this time, taking turns to be thrashed by Jou, Kaiba, and Yuu. His already dire condition only worsened.
In a severely weakened state, Yeshen might still be able to drive a few ordinary card designers mad like the Godlike Deity once did, but trying to retaliate against a Duelist of Yuu's caliber was now out of the question.
Still, Yeshen was Yeshen, and Yuu didn't let his guard down. He kept the three brothers close but would need to be cautious when using them in the future.
After a busy period, Yuu realized he had overlooked something important.
The final exams.
Another semester had flown by. When Yuu returned to the academy, he was surprised to find that he had missed the final exams entirely.
Of course, it wasn't a big deal. Both the principal and the teachers had long accepted Yuu's special status. Although he was technically still a student, as the Duel King, he was essentially the face of Duel Academy.
Moreover, Principal Samejima often treated Yuu as the de facto highest authority in the school. If you asked the board, they would likely agree.
So, no one had bothered to notify Yuu about the final exams. It wasn't that he had intentionally skipped them; if he had remembered, he probably would have shown up.
Well, no big deal, he thought. If he missed them, he missed them. It wouldn't make much of a difference.
After the final exams, the entire academy immediately became much quieter. Many students left the school immediately after the exams, and those who stayed mostly stayed in their dorms, rarely venturing out.
Yuu stood on the rooftop of the tallest building, looking down at the distant forest and the sea beyond.
The rooftop was usually deserted, and even more so after the exams. Yuu often came here to reflect because it was the highest point in the entire academy. Standing here gave him the feeling of having the whole island in his grasp.
Sometimes, it helped him clear his mind, to think about recent events, upcoming challenges, and past gains and losses.
"Nearly three years have flown by", Yuu murmured.
This was his final semester. After this, he would graduate.
So far, he had handled all his opponents smoothly. According to the original story, the final boss of the last semester was Darkness. Yuu knew this guy had already awakened as in the original story, having encountered some of Darkness's minions earlier.
Darkness's Dueling skills in the anime were average, but his ability to eliminate the existence of everyone in the world was still formidable and not to be underestimated.
Reflecting on the past three years, Yuu felt he had made tremendous progress and gained a lot, but he also sensed a subtle loss.
The door to the stairwell behind him opened, and someone poked their head out.
"Yuu?" Jou asked, puzzled. "Why are you on my favorite spot?"
"Jou? Your favorite spot?"
Yuu looked down at the rooftop where he stood.
"Ha, yeah. Whenever I want to skip class and have some peace, I always come here to lie down", Jou explained, smiling. "Even though there are no classes now, I've gotten used to this place. I feel off if I don't come here every few days."
"Is that so? Well, you're here just in time. I actually wanted to ask you for a favor", Yuu said, smiling.
Jou waved his hand. "No problem!"
Yuu said, "I haven't even told you what it is yet."
Jou laughed. "Your problem is my problem. What's there to discuss between us?"
"Ha, thanks in advance then. It's not a big deal."
Yuu smiled.
"I just need to borrow your Ubel."
"Eh?"
