Chapter 101: The Master Wants to Retire
Chapter 101: The Master Wants to Retire
Humans are social creatures, and perhaps our love for spectacle stems from this nature.
It started with Mira wanting to show Rod some photo albums. When Levy found out, she joined in right away. Soon after, Erza and Gray came to join the fun. Then Makao and Wakaba, two of the guild's most seasoned members, joined the group. They knew more about the guild's history than Mira, having spent their formative years there.
Their stories drew more and more people, and soon the bar area was packed with layers of onlookers. At first, it was all laughs and smiles, but when Makao revealed a particularly embarrassing story about Wakaba, Rod felt a sense of unease.
"Mira, let's slip away quietly, okay?"
"Slip away? Why?" Mira was enjoying the new stories she was hearing.
Before she could finish, Wakaba retaliated with an embarrassing story about Makao. Rod quickly grabbed Mira's wrist and pulled her around the bar, whispering, "If we don't leave now, it'll be too late!"
"Rod?" Mira was dragged through the crowd, finding a less crowded spot.
Looking back at her, Rod felt a moment of elation, almost like they were running away together.
By the time they squeezed out of the crowd and reached the back of the guild hall, Mira saw the group that had been reminiscing now engaged in a heated argument. The first punch was thrown, and chaos erupted into a full-scale brawl.
"Ah, ah, ah..." Mira covered her mouth with her hand, "Rod, do you have a talent for avoiding trouble?"
"Maybe just a bit more cautious than most." Rod watched the battle intently.
When a tray flew their way, Rod instinctively stepped in front of Mira and caught it with ease.
Mira couldn't help but think that Rod looked pretty cool in that moment.
The day started with a burst of energy, a guild-wide brawl. If Natsu hadn't been struck by lightning the day before, it might have been even more chaotic, giving Erza more reason to break up the fight.
Makarov entered the guild with two old friends, only to find the place in disarray.
The veins on his forehead bulged. "You idiots, can't you go a single day without causing trouble?"
"I'm sorry, Master. I should have kept a better eye on them," Erza said, looking genuinely remorseful despite the frequent nature of such incidents.
"Ha ha ha... The guild is as lively as ever, Makarov," said an elderly man with sunglasses.
"They seem like a very energetic bunch, Makarov," added another man of similar height.
Makarov sighed, "I didn't bring you here to see this."
Erza recognized the two men. "You're the master of Blue Pegasus, Godman, and the sixth seat of the Council, Ajima!"
Ajima smiled, "Hello, Erza. You're as beautiful and reliable as they say."
Erza modestly replied, "Thank you, but I still have much to improve."
Godman said, "Ah, the Fairy Queen's reputation has reached us. How about it, would you consider joining our guild?"
"Hey, don't try to poach my members right in front of me!" Makarov's arm stretched out, giving Godman a light pat on the back.
Erza responded gracefully, "Thank you for the offer, but Fairy Tail is my home."
Mira, recognizing the two men, led Rod over to greet them. "Welcome to Fairy Tail, Ajima and Godman."
Seeing the three most reliable members of the guild stand together, Makarov beamed, "Ha ha ha, aren't my kids great?"
Godman said, "You've done a fantastic job managing the guild, Makarov."
Ajima, noticing Makarov's growing pride, added, "It would be even better if they caused less trouble. Once I retire, no one will speak up for you, and the Council will eventually order the guild to disband."
Makarov's smile faltered, "Really, don't say such discouraging things at a time like this."
"Alright, then you'll have to treat me to Fairy Tail's special BBQ ramen," Ajima said, holding out his hands, "And make sure to add ten slices of BBQ."
Makarov shouted, "Too much char siu!"
Yajima retracted his hand, "Then twelve slices."
Makarov yelled, "Don't keep adding more without permission!"
Gildarts chimed in, "I'll have the same."
Makarov's head grew and stretched to Gildarts' ear, "You pay for your own!"
Erza, Mira, and Rod couldn't help but laugh. No wonder these were the Guild Master's friends; their personalities matched Fairy Tail's chaos perfectly.
In the end, Makarov treated his two old friends to ramen, with twelve slices of char siu each.
And to one-up them, he added thirteen slices to his own bowl.
The three old men slurped their noodles at the counter, a scene that was quite rare.
One couldn't help but wonder if they were just as competitive in their youth, bickering until the one who lost or got caught had to buy dinner.
From their youth to their white hair, it was an enviable friendship.
"Indeed, Fairy Tail's special ramen is the best," Yajima praised. "I might open a restaurant after I retire."
Gildarts said, "Remember to let me know when you open. I'll come and eat for free."
Yajima retorted, "I'll have Fairy Tail's mages help me throw out all the freeloaders."
Makarov laughed, "No problem, I'll send my strongest team to beat him up!"
"Ha ha ha..."
The old men's conversation was filled with laughter.
Yajima asked, "How is Porlyusica doing?"
Makarov replied, "The same as always, living alone in the forest."
"That's too lonely. Have you thought about bringing her out?"
Gildarts stuffed the last slice of char siu into his mouth and mumbled, "It's too bad the two of you didn't get married back then."
Hmm? There's a story here!
Rod subtly moved closer to listen.
Mira, already standing in front of the three, just smiled wider.
Erza couldn't help but lean in as well, her cheeks a bit red at the mention of marriage.
The Guild Master and Porlyusica...?
In Happy's words, 'they had a thing'?
Makarov, not noticing the younger ones' movements, grumbled, "That was so long ago, why bring it up now?"
"True, it's been so many years," Yajima said. "Have you thought about the next Guild Master?"
"The next one...?" Makarov was a bit troubled.
If there were a suitable candidate, he would have retired long ago.
Originally, Laxus would have been the best choice, but he was in a rebellious phase.
Gildarts was powerful enough, but his personality was a headache, and he was currently missing.
Mystogan's situation definitely wouldn't work.
Erza was still too young, and Mira had even more issues.
The idea of Cana, Natsu, or Gray as the next Guild Master was too much to even imagine.
As for the other outstanding new members...
Makarov's gaze swept over Rod, who was eavesdropping.
This kid was good in many ways, but he needed more time to grow in terms of strength and reputation. And his personality...
He brings a backpack full of Burst Magic Crystals even for a simple escort mission.
That's definitely not a good sign.
Maybe he'll improve after he travels more and gets a better understanding of the world.
Overall, he's still worth keeping an eye on.
Wait, Rod has been in the guild for three months. How many missions has he taken on?
Thinking about what Rod did every day, Makarov tugged at his beard in frustration.
He can't be planning to train to S-class before taking on regular missions, can he?
I almost forgot that the Four Guardian Saints' Guild Master, Gildarts, has a name so similar to Gildarts. Hiro-sensei's naming is just as casual as mine.
Also, those two are indeed from Fairy Tail.
