Chapter 1001: Belief —— Gryffindor's Sword!
Chapter 1001: Belief —— Gryffindor's Sword!
In the moment of impending death, a faint glimmer of light suddenly appeared on Grindelwald's chest. His previously frozen body instantly regained the ability to move. His free left hand made a desperate gesture, and the wardrobe behind Ivan was sent hurtling forward.
Ivan, who was fully focused on casting, had no time to react. The wardrobe crashed into his back, and the Killing Curse he had been maintaining was forcibly interrupted.
The two spell beams in mid-air vanished almost simultaneously. The central black dot rapidly contracted into a small point and then rapidly expanded.
The next moment, a violent explosion echoed through the Department of Mysteries. The shockwave cracked the stone floor and sent both men flying to the ground.
More crucially, the abrupt interruption of their casting caused both Ivan and Grindelwald to suffer significant magical backlash, their faces pale and strained.
Ivan clutched his chest and struggled to his feet, his gaze filled with confusion as he looked at Grindelwald. He had clearly immobilized Grindelwald with the Basilisk Gaze, yet Grindelwald had somehow regained his ability to move, something that had never happened in previous battles.
Unless... Ivan suddenly thought of a particular exception, and a chill ran down his spine.
Over four years ago, when he had faced Tom Riddle in the Chamber of Secrets, Riddle had exhibited similar behavior. While his physical form was controlled by the Basilisk Gaze, another Horcrux had taken over and evaded the fatal blow Ivan had aimed at him.
Realizing this, Ivan's heart sank. It seemed his greatest fear had come to pass. He had originally believed that Grindelwald, with his pride, would disdain the creation of multiple Horcruxes. However, it appeared that either under his pressure or to avoid Voldemort's fate, Grindelwald had created at least two Horcruxes, one of which he carried with him.
No wonder the destruction of the first pendant had had such a limited effect on Grindelwald...
Ivan's eyes scanned Grindelwald's body, but he could not see where the Horcrux was hidden. Even if he knew, with the protection of the Invisibility Cloak, destroying it would not be easy.
He could only hope there was no third Horcrux... Ivan's right hand trembled as he caressed the fine cracks on the Human Bone Wand. He knew this battle would likely be a fight to the death.
Ivan took a deep breath and then, wand in hand, charged towards Grindelwald.
Crimson dragon scales gradually appeared on Ivan's arms and face, his expression fierce and savage.
During this brief respite, Grindelwald had also regained his strength. Though his body was still affected by the Basilisk Gaze and remained stiff, the constant flow of magic was gradually improving his condition.
Wary of Ivan's eerie eyes, Grindelwald deliberately avoided making eye contact. When he saw Ivan charging straight towards him, his face changed, and he swung his right hand, which was still somewhat stiff, to cast an invisible Magic Blade.
"Sectumsempra!" Ivan cast the same spell at the same moment.
A metallic clashing sound echoed in the air as the two invisible blades collided and then vanished.
Ivan's Human Bone Wand, unable to withstand the strain of the casting, exploded in his hand!
Grindelwald's lips curled into a smile. He saw the light of victory. He raised the Elder Wand and pointed it at Ivan, shouting loudly.
"Avada Kedavra!"
At such close range, Grindelwald was certain he could not miss. The Killing Curse was filled with intense malice!
However, Ivan, standing less than two meters away, made an inexplicable move. Without any weapon in his hands, he made a grabbing motion and then forcefully slashed downward!
The emerald-green beam was sliced apart, veering off to the sides of Ivan's body. Similarly, Grindelwald's right hand, which held the wand, was severed, blood spurting from the severed wrist. The most powerful wand, coveted by countless legendary wizards, spun through the air and fell to the ground...
This can't be!
Grindelwald's pupils dilated as he noticed a silver sword, adorned with intricate runes, appearing in Ivan's clasped hands. It was this sword that had cut through the powerful Killing Curse and severed his right hand.
Ivan stepped forward again, his right wrist twisting to extend the sword horizontally, his left hand pressing against the hilt. He thrust the sword into Grindelwald's chest.
A thin layer of clothing stood between the sword tip and Grindelwald's chest, the sturdy Invisibility Cloak the only barrier in Ivan's way.
"Get out of my way!" Grindelwald roared in fury. Powerful magic erupted from him, transforming into a sea of dark blue Fiendfyre that surged toward Ivan.
Anyone else would have been unable to face this terrifying Fiendfyre, but Ivan did not dodge or evade. He allowed the Fiendfyre to scorch his body, his expression growing more and more ferocious as he pushed Grindelwald back against the wall with the sword tip.
"You can't kill me, Hals. The winner will always be me!" Grindelwald snarled, his intact left hand gripping Ivan's shoulder tightly, dark blue Fiendfyre continuously spewing from his fingertips, trying to engulf Ivan.
Unfortunately, an invisible magic barrier hovered just beneath Ivan's skin, blocking the Fiendfyre's intrusion.
"That's not certain!" Ivan's eyes turned bloodshot, his gaze fixed on Grindelwald as he spoke each word deliberately. "Let's make a bet, Grindelwald..."
"I bet you'll die!" Ivan shouted, the Gryffindor's Sword in his hand glowing with a golden Lumos. The runes on the blade seemed to come alive, rapidly absorbing the wielder's magic.
A crack appeared on the surface of the Invisibility Cloak, like a tear in a flowing fabric. The crack widened, and the silver blade pierced Grindelwald's body.
"How... how can this be?!" Grindelwald looked down in disbelief. This incredibly powerful protective Deathly Hallow had been penetrated, and what terrified him even more was that Ivan had not stabbed his heart but the left side of his chest—where he had stored his Horcrux.
"My luck has always been good!" Ivan's eyes gleamed. He didn't know where Grindelwald had stored his Horcrux or what it looked like, so he had relied on his intuition.
Fortunately, his intuition had been spot-on today!
"It seems you don't have a third Horcrux!" Ivan felt Grindelwald's life force rapidly weakening and mocked him.
Grindelwald's expression was utterly frantic, all the remaining magic in his body surging to his left hand, which he used to fling Ivan away.
Ivan fell to the ground, struggling to get back up, but Grindelwald pounced on him, pinning him down by the throat.
Ivan did not resist, merely looking at Grindelwald coldly, as the latter no longer had the strength to choke him to death.
If that sword had hit a vital point, Grindelwald would have been dead by now. Even so, Ivan could feel Grindelwald's life force almost completely drained, his last bit of energy maintained solely by his intense will.
Ivan stared into Grindelwald's eyes for a long time, then finally spoke in a hoarse voice. "It's time for you to fulfill the Pact... Gellert!"
Grindelwald's crazed expression froze, his left hand trembling as it gripped Ivan's neck.
"This time, you lost..." Ivan's face was calm as he spoke slowly. "Don't forget, he's still waiting for you!"
"Ha... hahaha~" Grindelwald suddenly released Ivan's neck, stumbling to his feet. The vast Department of Mysteries soon echoed with his sharp, manic laughter.
After several seconds, everything returned to silence...
