Chapter 100: New Insights into Mu Yue (15)
Chapter 100: New Insights into Mu Yue (15)
After joining the Southern Forest Training Squad for a few days, Nohara Lin gained many new insights.
For instance, the extent of Mu Yue's abilities.
Although Mu Yue had always struck Nohara Lin as an excellent teacher, she believed that it was solely due to Mu Yue's pedagogical prowess and that, as a ninja, Mu Yue's prowess was comparable to that of other jonin-level teachers.
Now, however, Nohara Lin realized how mistaken she had been.
The sheer power of the fire jutsu Mu Yue taught to her student, Stop Water, was evidence enough for Nohara Lin that Mu Yue was no ordinary ninja.
While the ninja school's jutsu classes only covered transformation techniques, students often pleaded to witness other jutsu, and occasionally, jonin-level teachers would oblige and demonstrate their prowess.
Nohara Lin had never witnessed jonin-level ninja in combat or performing jutsu, but she surmised that even if Mu Yue wasn't on par with those elite ninja, she was undoubtedly one of the strongest jonin.
Moreover, Mu Yue seemed to be a jack-of-all-trades, proficient in not just ninjutsu but also taijutsu, genjutsu, and even medical ninjutsu.
Aside from gauging Mu Yue's strength, Nohara Lin also noticed that Mu Yue seemed more relaxed and at ease during their time in the forest than back at the training grounds.
Another mystery solved was the matter of Obito's diligent studies last semester. Seeing him dejected after losing the footrace and being assigned a stack of exercises, Nohara Lin finally understood why she had often spotted Obito poring over his books.
She had found it odd; Obito's expression as he studied was bitter and reluctant, yet he persevered day after day. It seemed contradictory, as if he were both loath to study and yet compelled to do so.
All in all, Nohara Lin was pleased with her decision to become Mu Yue's disciple.
"Damn it! I was so close!" Obito pounded the ground in frustration as he sat on the ground.
Moments ago, he had come tantalizingly close to beating Maito Gai in the race.
"It's okay," Nohara Lin gently consoled him. "You were so close this time. With a little more effort, you might succeed next time."
Obito's spirits lifted instantly at Nohara Lin's words, and he stood up, brushing off the dust from his clothes. "You'll see, Akai. Tomorrow, I'll definitely beat you!" he declared with newfound determination.
"Obito," Mu Yue said with a smile as he handed him a stack of papers. "Here are your 35 exercises."
Seeing the stack of exercises, Obito's enthusiasm waned, and he trembled as he took the papers, as if they were a cup of poisoned wine.
"I thought you loved studying, Obito?" Nohara Lin teased, unable to hide her smile at Obito's dejected expression.
"Yes, I love it so much that I feel ill if I don't solve a dozen or so equations a day," Obito replied, fighting the urge to burst into tears.
"Would you like me to add a few more?" Mu Yue asked with a mischievous smile.
"No, thank you," Obito declined decisively. The additional exercises he had been assigned each day were already more than enough.
"Back to training," Mu Yue said, tapping Obito on the head with her finger, indicating that his little drama was over.
In addition to teaching Nohara Lin medical ninjutsu, Mu Yue also instructed her in taijutsu.
Medical ninjutsu could be applied in combat and possessed formidable offensive capabilities. When combined with excellent taijutsu, it could make a formidable fighter, as exemplified by Tsunade.
Since it was Saturday, Mu Yue spent the afternoon training with Asuma at the Sarutobi Clan's compound.
Today, Hiruzen Sarutobi seemed to be free, and when Mu Yue arrived, he was seated in the living room, perusing some documents.
The Ninja Academy's vacation period spanned from mid-July to early September, amounting to a little over a month of holiday time.
It was unreasonable to deprive the students of any vacation time, so the summer training squad was scheduled for only five weeks, seamlessly bridging the gap between the end of the school year and the start of the next.
"The students have been diligent in their training and eager to learn. They've all made progress, for the most part," Mu Yue replied thoughtfully.
"I've been conducting tests every week to track their growth. Let me go and fetch those records now," Mu Yue continued, turning to leave to retrieve the documentation.
"No need to trouble yourself. Just bring them along when you come tomorrow, Mu Yue," Hiruzen said with a jovial wave of his hand.
"But since you mention it, you must be seeing some impressive results. It seems Konoha will soon have another special jonin," Hiruzen added.
Hiruzen intended to personally observe the students' progress during the fifth week of training.
If the results were indeed promising, he would consider making such intensive training a regular occurrence.
Should Konoha ever become embroiled in war, Hiruzen would even contemplate canceling the regular fourth-year curriculum and having Mu Yue train the students until their graduation.
"Old man, I think your eyesight is failing you," Asuma, who happened to be passing by, interjected. "Why don't you just appoint Mu Yue as a jonin directly? I think my jonin mentor pales in comparison to Mu Yue."
"I feel like my jonin instructor wasn't as good as Teacher Mu Yue," Asuma added.
"Being a jonin entails more than just excelling in one area," Hiruzen explained. "A jonin must demonstrate excellence across the board."
Setting aside other considerations, Mu Yue fell short of the mark when it came to the quantity and quality of missions—a significant discrepancy. Hiruzen had only promoted Mu Yue to the rank of special jonin because of her exceptional teaching abilities coupled with her promising combat prowess, which indicated future potential.
"I think Teacher Mu Yue is excellent in all aspects," Asuma asserted. "Anyway, since you rarely visit the Ninja Academy, why not appoint Mu Yue as the principal?"
Hiruzen's blood pressure soared as he heard Asuma's audacious suggestion. He rubbed his temples and gestured for Mu Yue to take Asuma away.
Mu Yue nodded in understanding and led Asuma off to continue his training.
"When will this boy ever grow up?" Hiruzen sighed.
While it was true that his duties as Hokage left him little time to tend to the affairs of the Ninja Academy, and Mu Yue's teaching abilities were indeed exceptional, Hiruzen could not appoint Mu Yue as the principal—at least, not the Mu Yue of the present.
Since its establishment, the Ninja Academy had only ever had two principals: Tobirama Senju and himself.
The founding of the Ninja Academy held significant importance for Konoha, and even as the village's systems evolved, the position of principal retained a modicum of special significance.
Unless a teacher made an extraordinary contribution, Hiruzen intended to reserve the role of principal for the next Hokage.
Hiruzen believed that Asuma would come to understand the rationale behind his decisions when he matured.
