Chapter 100: Let This Dementor Go, It Has Tried Hard Enough
Chapter 100: Let This Dementor Go, It Has Tried Hard Enough
"Alright, pay attention."
Dugard pointed his wand at the lock, blasting it open. He then swiftly moved to the corner, avoiding becoming the Dementor's primary target.
In the next moment, the surroundings seemed to darken, and the crate containing the Dementor appeared even more pitch black.
Cold and desolate.
Ivan felt his body plunge into an ice cellar, as if some force was draining the warmth from his body.
Then, a withered, scarred hand emerged from the crate, followed by a peculiar, cloaked figure that floated out. It seemed to have no legs, hovering in the air with its exposed body so decayed that bones were visible.
Ivan had seen the pitted arms of a werewolf and the burned body of Chino, but neither compared to the Dementor. The Dementor looked like a mummy draped in tattered cloth, with an empty, hollow shell beneath.
Ivan tried to recall happy memories, but he couldn't. He felt as if he were back on his hospital bed, with the demon of illness slowly sapping his remaining vitality, leaving him powerless to resist his own death.
Dugard took a swig of alcohol, his wand already in hand, ready to intervene. He thought Ivan might not be able to hold on much longer and hoped this wouldn't leave any psychological scars.
The Dementor now floated in front of Ivan, exhaling a chilling cold. It then began to strip away something ethereal and colorful from Ivan's body, drawing it into its hollow mouth.
At some point, the Dementor's withered fingers had reached for the brim of its hood, preparing to lift it. Dugard was about to intervene but stopped when he saw a wand already pointed at the Dementor's mouth.
"Expecto Patronum!"
Under the threat of death, Ivan shouted.
The dark, silent space regained its color, and with a hiss, a brilliant light pierced the Dementor's body. More light streamed through the tattered cloak, and an eerie, silent scream shook the air. The Dementor's ethereal form seemed to waver as if struck by a heavy blow, flying backward and finally retreating into the crate under the pressure of the white mist.
Just as the white mist was about to flood in, the crate was suddenly closed. Dugard had already moved to the crate and was cleaning up.
"How are you feeling? Are you okay? I don't have any chocolate, but perhaps a drink?"
"No, I'm fine. No need for the drink", Ivan shook his head and then glanced at the system panel.
The Expecto Patronum spell had directly reached level three. The pressure this time was immense, and he had deliberately not used Occlumency to resist the Dementor's ability to drain happiness.
"Let's continue!" Ivan said after a few minutes of adjusting his emotions.
"So soon? Don't you want to rest a bit?" Dugard raised an eyebrow.
"Let's continue!" Ivan insisted.
Dugard complied, opening the crate again. The Dementor rushed out, its face hidden by the hood, but for some reason, Ivan could sense its anger.
"Expecto Patronum!" Facing the Dementor again, Ivan was more familiar with the process, and his fear had diminished. More importantly, the skill upgrade had brought him joy.
The white mist reappeared, this time more abundant, even beginning to form the shape of a guardian. The mist enveloped the Dementor's body, forcing it back into the crate.
[Ding, after practice, the Proficiency of Expecto Patronum has significantly increased.]
"Phew", Ivan looked at the system notification and was quite satisfied. Practicing Expecto Patronum by facing the Dementor indeed led to a rapid increase in Proficiency.
In that case, it might be possible to boost his level to four in just one afternoon.
With this thought, Ivan spoke with enthusiasm.
"Continue."
Dugot's expression was rather strange. The Dementors' ability to absorb happiness and cause pain was so terrifying that even many adult Wizards were reluctant to face them.
He hadn't expected Ivan to not only withstand the pressure but also become increasingly excited. Though somewhat puzzled, Dugot still complied.
For the third time, the Dementor, resembling a black rag, flattened its body and rushed toward Ivan, only to be entangled by the white mist and defeated by Ivan.
For the fourth time, the Dementor tried to escape but was forced back into the crate by Dugot's Patronus Charm.
Fifth time.
Sixth time.
Ivan was thoroughly enjoying himself. A third-level Patronus Charm wasn't enough to kill a Dementor, so he could practice with complete peace of mind.
Moreover, the sound of increased Proficiency always made him happier.
*Ding, after practice, the Proficiency of Patronus Charm has significantly improved.*
*Patronus Charm has reached level four, current Proficiency (1/1600), rewarded with twenty Academic Points!*
After repelling the Dementor for the eleventh time, the system's notification finally rang in Ivan's mind.
The white mist floating around slowly condensed, and the long cry of a Unicorn became clearly audible in the basement.
Dugot raised an eyebrow; he had long noticed the uniqueness of Ivan's Patronus Charm but assumed it was related to Aisia, so he didn't ask.
Now, he was somewhat curious about what Ivan's Patronus looked like.
However, the Patronus that faintly took the shape of a horse dissolved back into white mist at the last moment. Dugot shook his head and sighed.
Ivan's face showed no sign of disappointment because this time, it was intentional.
Although Dugot was one of the few people Ivan trusted in his memories, they had only known each other for less than a day. The Shadow Unicorn, as his greatest trump card, should be known by as few people as possible.
"Do you want to continue?" Dugot asked.
Ivan nodded. Since the Patronus Charm was related to his Bloodline Magic, the higher the level, the better. It was a rare opportunity to have a Dementor as a sparring partner, so he wanted to practice as long as possible.
However, when Dugot opened the crate for the twelfth time, Ivan waited for a long time without the Dementor attacking.
Just as Ivan wondered if he had somehow killed the Dementor, a withered, decaying arm reached out, grabbed the lid, and slammed the crate shut.
It seemed the Dementor found staying in the crate quite comfortable and didn't want to come out.
Ivan stood in front of the crate, completely taken aback by the Dementor's reaction.
Ivan turned to Dugot with a puzzled expression.
Dugot was also confused and said awkwardly, "Um, I think it might be tired today and needs to rest. Maybe we should come back tomorrow."
"Aren't Dementors supposed to be dark, cruel, and mentally unstable creatures?" Ivan asked, speechless.
"That's true, but they still have intelligence and can understand commands. Otherwise, the Ministry of Magic wouldn't use Dementors to guard Azkaban", Dugot explained.
(PS: During Lupin's school days, he hadn't taken the Wolfsbane Potion. Every full moon, he would transform and lose control, having to stay in the Shrieking Shack. As an important member of the Order of the Phoenix, Lupin was a hero in the fight against Voldemort. If Dumbledore had a way, he wouldn't have let Lupin remain so poor and destitute. It's likely that the Wolfsbane Potion was developed during Harry's second year, and Dumbledore, upon receiving the news, dismissed the amnesiac Lockhart at the end of the term and immediately brought back the wandering Lupin, appointing him as the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.)
