Chapter 10: The Future of the Human World
Chapter 10: The Future of the Human World
The Horned Demon Commander noticed the iron cage that had been holding food was empty and rushed over, swinging its muscular forelimb to punch the cage away with a loud "bang."
It then turned and pounced on the nearest metahuman, swiping down with a claw.
Ah!
Splat!
The metahuman was shattered by the blow, the scream abruptly cut off, blood and flesh splattering the ground and walls.
The other metahumans, seeing this, were terrified and scattered in all directions in a panic.
Hu Biao, seeing his allies flee, knew it was impossible to gather them again. He shouted while running, "First, escape the building! Once outside, head north, and we'll regroup somewhere!"
The scholarly youth was the last to crawl out of the iron cage. When escaping, he calmly took the reinforced steel with him.
Lu Heng rushed directly to Su Muyu, pulling her along as he ran and asked, "What did you find?"
"I got a backpack and a rope. There was a dagger, but someone else took it. I listened to you and didn't fight him for it," Su Muyu held up the backpack, showing the rope inside.
"Good, let's escape first."
Since they were on the 7th floor, jumping down was out of the question, so most of the metahumans fled towards the stairs.
The Horned Demon Commander, using all four claws, pounced at the stairwell and swiped, turning three people into a bloody mess.
Bang!
The building echoed with piercing screams.
Each scream meant another person had been killed by the Horned Demon Commander.
Lu Heng did not run towards the stairs but instead pulled Su Muyu towards the edge of the floor.
S
Lu Heng pulled her to the edge of the floor and glanced down.
They were on the 7th floor, more than 20 meters above the ground.
Lu Heng took out the rope from the backpack and swung one end down.
The rope was only 10 meters long and not suitable for tying knots, so they could only descend to the 4th floor.
Lu Heng made a quick decision, tying the rope to a pillar and wrapping his hands with cloth three times. He said to Su Muyu, "Hold on tight."
Su Muyu nodded and wrapped her arms around Lu Heng's waist.
Lu Heng summoned a Shadow Clone and then grabbed the rope, sliding down.
They landed on the 4th floor and jumped into the building.
Next, he controlled the Shadow Clone on the 7th floor to untie the rope.
Just then,
The scholarly youth ran up, shouting, "Wait, let me slide down. Give me two seconds, I won't waste your time."
As he spoke, he had already wrapped his hands with cloth.
With the cloth, his hands wouldn't be torn when sliding down.
Lu Heng, seeing he was relatively calm, had the Shadow Clone pause for a moment.
The scholarly youth moved quickly, grabbing the rope and sliding down.
He landed on the 4th floor and immediately flipped into the building.
Lu Heng immediately controlled the Shadow Clone to untie the rope and throw it down, securing the 4th floor end to a pillar.
The rope reached the ground.
Lu Heng and Su Muyu descended quickly. As soon as they landed, they heard the Horned Demon Commander's deafening roar from the building.
The Horned Demon Commander seemed to have noticed food escaping the building and was preparing to chase after them.
Lu Heng immediately controlled the Shadow Clone to hold back the Horned Demon Commander, but it only delayed for a few seconds before the clone was destroyed.
After landing, Lu Heng looked around, chose a direction, and pulled Su Muyu away quickly.
The scholarly youth, after sliding down, ran up quickly and thanked them, "Thank you. I'm Chen Zihan. As a thank you, I'll give you a weapon for protection."
He threw a metal sword to Lu Heng and kept a fire axe for himself.
"Metal Manipulation?" Lu Heng, recalling how he had used telekinesis to grab the steel, had already guessed his ability.
"A bit of magnetism," Chen Zihan explained casually.
"Thanks."
Lu Heng brandished the iron sword in his hand, and its attributes immediately appeared.
【Iron Sword】
【Item Grade: E-Rank】
【Specifications: Length 130 cm, blade width 3.5 cm, weight 1.6 kg】
【Attribute: Attack Power 10】
【Evaluation: A weapon made of fine iron, causing sharp blade damage when attacking. It's of average quality and can be purchased anywhere.】
After obtaining the weapon, Lu Heng waved goodbye to him and then hurried into the mist with Su Muyu.
Inside the building behind them, the horned demon commander's roars still echoed.
...
The two ran together until they could no longer hear the commander's howls, then slowed down to catch their breath.
Su Muyu, with her hand on her chest, panted heavily, her chest heaving. After running such a distance, she had exceeded her endurance.
Lu Heng noticed her expression and asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
Su Muyu nodded and tightened her stab-resistant vest, "I'm fine. I'm not used to this level of physical activity, I just need a moment to catch my breath."
At that moment, a string of data prompts appeared in Lu Heng's eyes.
【Psychic Contamination from an unknown source, Spirit -1】
【Spirit will drop to 0, leading to madness.】
Seeing this prompt, Lu Heng exhaled, "As expected."
The attributes on the data panel changed to: Strength 11, Agility 14, Constitution 11, Spirit (12/13), and Perception 12.
The original Spirit attribute was 13 points, but due to the psychic contamination from an unknown source, it had dropped to 12 points.
Su Muyu also noticed the prompt and asked, "My Spirit attribute has decreased."
Lu Heng looked up at the mist covering the entire city, as if he could sense a terrifying presence within it:
"It's psychic contamination. No wonder the danger level of this world is Grade 3."
Just the words of the horned demon commander would make it a Grade 2 danger, but with the omnipresent psychic contamination, it became Grade 3.
"From the time we teleported here until now, it's been about an hour. Is it that we lose 1 point of Spirit every hour?" Su Muyu quickly estimated the time and came up with an approximate calculation.
Lu Heng nodded in confirmation, "Indeed, it's one point every hour."
Su Muyu frowned, "Then our Spirit can only last for about ten hours, not even three days."
"So we need to find items that can resist psychic contamination, or medicines to restore Spirit, or perhaps..."
Lu Heng paused, glancing again at the challenge mission prompts for the Abyss Battlefield.
The second challenge mission was:
【2. Find the castle hidden in the wasteland city.】
This mission didn't appear out of nowhere; at the very least, it indicated that there was a castle hidden within the mist of this city.
However, they couldn't yet determine the nature of this castle.
The castle might be dangerous, but there was another possibility...
Lu Heng voiced his speculation, "Perhaps, the castle mentioned in the challenge mission can block psychic contamination."
As they spoke, they arrived at a building resembling a shopping mall.
Su Muyu ran over, picked up a product packaging from the ground, and stared at the unfamiliar text on it. She turned and asked, "I don't recognize any of these characters. Are they from some obscure small country?"
Lu Heng looked around at the buildings and said, "Perhaps not a small country, but... another civilization."
"Another civilization?" Su Muyu's eyes widened in surprise, as this answer exceeded her initial expectations.
"The Abyss has devoured more than one world. This city is probably just one of the many worlds swallowed by the Abyss," Lu Heng revealed a secret that would shock many.
This secret was supposed to be discovered by humans a year after the Abyss's arrival.
Su Muyu's face showed her astonishment, and she could already imagine what the Abyss's arrival would bring to the human world.
Perhaps this wasteland city's current state was a glimpse into the human world's future.
