Chapter 10: My Disciple
Chapter 10: My Disciple
Half an hour later, the villagers who had come to handle the deceased's burial matters returned from the town.
Along with them were the deceased's relatives and friends, who had come to pay their respects.
The elderly nun, fulfilling her duties, returned to the chapel to oversee the funeral arrangements.
Lin Sai was left alone in the house.
After this period of communication, he had regained his composure.
The information the nun shared with him was a mixed bag.
For instance, his understanding of the term 'universe' from Earth did not apply here.
The universe the nun referred to was not the dark void filled with countless stars.
Instead, it was a collective term for the interconnected worlds she spoke of.
The world Lin Sai currently inhabited was called the Hidden Frontier, discovered by a joint expedition of several worlds 120 years ago. However, it was soon blocked by a vast void at the world's edge.
Some Awakened with exceptional abilities chose to fly and continue their journey into the unknown.
The rest settled on the edge of the Hidden Frontier, and over time, it gradually evolved into the present-day town.
Due to the neighboring Black Mountain World, occupied by a powerful Dragonbeast, the frontier town had been isolated for the past century.
For the past hundred years, the frontier town could only communicate with other worlds through spatial teleportation.
Then, ten years ago, the teleportation facility was severely damaged by the Harvest Day Essence Tide and became inoperable, with no one able to repair it.
From that point on, the Hidden Frontier became a truly hidden land.
Completely cut off from the rest of civilization.
"This is truly a safe place..."
Sitting on the bed and taking a sip of hot water, Lin Sai sighed again, but his mindset was entirely different.
Compared to his previous panic, he was now completely calm.
First, he needed to return to Anville Village.
This was Lin Sai's primary goal, but it faced numerous challenges.
The good news was that due to the nature of the Hidden Frontier, the Law Knight would not find him. Before successfully leaving the Hidden Frontier, he might even have a chance to find a way to resolve his Criminal Mark from the Capital of Law.
With the unique skill of a Game Player, Lin Sai did not believe his future would be spent in mediocrity on the frontier.
What he needed to consider now was how to become stronger, develop his Game Player abilities, and find a way to traverse the Black Mountain and return to other civilizations.
He had a rough outline of his future in mind.
Lin Sai stepped out of the house once more.
Inside the small chapel, the nun was presiding over the mourning ceremony for the deceased's loved ones. Over a dozen people took turns passing by the yellow wood coffin, including elders and youths, men and women. Most wore sad expressions, but none shed tears.
Once everyone had finished paying their respects, the elderly nun stepped forward to the coffin.
Her aged body was not tall, but her dignified and profound demeanor compelled others to follow her prayers.
"Death has arrived, but it is not the end."
"The soul returns to slumber, and the body returns to essence."
"The dead should bid farewell to the world of the living, and the living should silently bid farewell to the dead."
"Rest in peace..."
"May you be free from the abyss, may you not lose your way in the sea of death, and may you embrace a new beginning..."
The prayer concluded, and the deceased's family lifted the coffin.
Led by the nun, they silently exited the chapel, leaving behind a moment of silence.
Lin Sai approached the church door, holding the doorframe and peeking inside.
The funeral procession stepped on the snow, turning towards the cemetery behind the church to officially bury the body.
The elderly nun was undoubtedly the pillar of strength during the funeral.
She directed the entire process with concise and clear instructions, and the surrounding villagers couldn't help but admire her leadership.
Whoosh—
The winter wind blew by, making Lin Sai, who had a cold, want to cough.
Not wanting to disturb the solemn burial ceremony, he returned to the church alone.
"It's so cold."
Lin Sai shivered, hugging his shoulders.
Although he had been staying in the small chapel for two days, this was the first time Lin Sai had observed the scene inside.
The tiny chapel was silent, empty except for Lin Sai.
Two rows of well-maintained wooden benches were arranged on the gray stone floor, facing the main altar, creating a solemn atmosphere. However, against the wall, there were also some old curtain fabrics.
The dome and walls were devoid of stained glass.
The chapel only had a few round windows near the ceiling, allowing a few rays of winter sunlight to slant in, revealing the dust floating in the air and the exposed beams of the church.
The only thing that caught Lin Sai's eye was behind the main altar, where a statue stood in a circular frame, resembling a straight line.
"This... is probably a symbol of faith, like a cross?" Lin Sai muttered to himself.
At that moment, footsteps approached from behind the chapel door.
He turned around and saw two guards wearing simple armor and carrying weapons. As they entered, they politely spoke up,
"Hello, we're waiting for Lady Red Moon here... Hmm?"
Upon seeing Lin Sai's appearance, the two guards froze.
Although the Hidden Frontier town was not small in scale, as guards patrolling the entire town, even if they couldn't remember everyone's names, they should have a general impression of the townspeople's appearances.
Lin Sai was a face they had never seen before.
Even if children of this age were playing and causing a ruckus on the streets, they should have at least seen each other once.
The two guards exchanged glances, and an idea immediately formed in their minds.
The more robust one took the initiative to walk up to Lin Sai and asked nervously,
"You, are you the Awakened one that Lady Red Moon found?"
Through the guard's question, Lin Sai now knew that Red Moon Lady was the name of the nun who had helped him.
But more importantly, the guard before him was aware of Lin Sai's Awakened status.
Lin Sai didn't want the guard to be so nervous while talking to him, so he quickly explained,
"Sir, I only Awakened recently and don't possess any extraordinary skills."
"That doesn't matter!" The guard interrupted Lin Sai, "It's been a long time since we've had outsiders here, let alone an Awakened one! You should go see the lord immediately. Come with me!"
When saying these firm words, the guard was obviously a bit afraid.
But thinking about the importance of an Awakened individual, and looking at the young child before him, the guard didn't hesitate to take Lin Sai away.
Instinctively, Lin Sai took two steps back.
Compared to the nun who had taken good care of him, he had no idea about the lord's background.
However, after realizing his situation, Lin Sai prepared to accept reality.
In the Hidden Frontier, this small town was the only civilized world he had contact with.
Moreover, refusing the guard before him was equivalent to provoking the lord of this place.
"There's no need to take him away."
Just as Lin Sai was about to leave with the guard, the nun's deep voice echoed from the main entrance of the chapel.
She walked with a steady and slow pace, approaching the two guards,
"Tell An Rui that this child is now a member of the Death Sect, my disciple."
The nun stood at the chapel entrance.
Her black eyes fixed on the two guards, revealing no emotions.
This scene instantly made the atmosphere tense, and the surrounding air became silent.
The two guards froze for a moment, then nodded vigorously,
"Lady Red Moon, we understand."
The mission to the chapel had failed, but the guards didn't dare to turn around and leave.
They respectfully bowed to the nun, showing the necessary courtesy, before leaving together.
