The cavalry horse that had just galloped past was clearly headed in the direction of Shanyu County. At the time, Lu HaiKong, who was eagerly anticipating a grand meal, didn't realize the implications of this. It wasn't until Yue E pulled him off the official highway and into the mountains that he finally understood something was amiss, but by then, it was too late.
"What are you doing? Weren't you going to treat me to a feast?" Lu HaiKong eyed Yue E with suspicion, fearing that this young lady might take advantage of him in the depths of the mountains.
"Yes, I was going to treat you to a meal," Yue E casually replied, trying to placate him.
"You liar! This road doesn't lead to Shanyu County at all. I know it, and you know it! Let me go; I want to go to the county for my meal!" Lu HaiKong struggled, but to no avail. A Level 5 Bandit like himself seemed no match for Yue E, whose level he couldn't even guess.
"Hey, you...!"
"What are you doing? Don't come any closer! I'm not just anyone; you can have my body, but you'll never have my heart! Ah, stop hitting me!"
Under Yue E's bright smile and soft fists, Lu HaiKong couldn't make it to Shanyu County for his meal. Instead, he was dragged deeper into the mountains by Yue E.
As they ventured into the mountains, it became evident that despite Lu HaiKong's background as a bandit from the mountains, his experience in the wilderness paled in comparison to Yue E's. She appeared delicate and deceitful, a lady who seemed to have never stepped out of her home, yet she was far more adept in the wild.
Even when Yue E chose easier paths for the sake of her horse, Lu HaiKong struggled to keep up. He swore that once he escaped this female demon, he would work hard to improve his martial arts skills. Yes, he'd practice diligently so that he could flee from her the next time they met.
"Hey, where are you taking me? We've been walking for ages, and we're still not there?"
"I'm taking you to grind monsters and earn money for our meal. We're almost there, keep going." Yue E's face flushed with excitement, and Lu HaiKong felt a bit uneasy. He feared she might lead him into trouble, but realizing he couldn't beat her, he obediently followed her into the 'trouble' ahead.
After walking for an hour or two in the mountains, they finally stopped at Yue E's instruction on a mountain path.
"What are you doing? Wait, what's that?" Lu HaiKong asked, perplexed. But the foodie's sharp eyes soon noticed the faint outlines of several buildings in the forest.
"It's a small bandit camp. I cleared it out last month, and I estimate it's respawned by now. Since we met, I thought we could grind the monsters together!" Yue E said eagerly.
"Oh, grinding monsters," Lu HaiKong said, suddenly interested. The fact that these monsters were his fellow bandits didn't bother him at all; after all, the only monster he had killed so far was a bandit.
"How do we grind them?" Lu HaiKong asked excitedly, having completed tasks for over a week.
"What else? We just charge in! These bandits are just wild monsters, stupid and mindless. As long as you stay out of their attack range, they won't bother you. Over there, about ten meters ahead, there should be two bandit lackeys. I'm not interested in these low-level monsters anymore, so you can take care of them for me."
As Yue E tilted her head, revealing her graceful neck and proud posture, Lu HaiKong couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. He grabbed his axe and headed towards the spot Yue E had indicated.
"Hey, you bandits, pay the toll!"
Sure enough, less than ten meters away, two robust figures emerged. These bandits looked almost identical to the one Lu HaiKong had encountered before—their eyes devoid of light, holding rusty knives. They were clearly low-level bandits, and Lu HaiKong's confidence surged.
"Come on, you two weaklings, my great axe is hungry and thirsty!" With this shout, Lu HaiKong felt as if he had gained an aura of buffs, instantly increasing his coolness by several points.
"Hey, you there, leave some toll money!"
The mountain bandits, true masters of thievery, showed no fear towards the buffed Foodie. Calm and composed, they effortlessly deflated his rising coolness with a simple, repeated line.
Realizing that Lu HaiKong wasn't the type to comply and pay, the bandits swung their large blades and pounced, determined to uphold their banditry dignity and authority.
Ah, behold the agile figures and fearless shadows—the true legendary heroes of the forest! Well, slightly disappointing, as two seconds later, these heroes fell to Lu HaiKong's axe.
Yue E, a discerning young woman, was intrigued by Lu HaiKong's effortless victory with just two axe swings. She asked, "Lu HaiKong, what level is your Basic Axe Technique?"
"Hmm, Basic Axe Technique? It's only Level 5. It's quite challenging; it took me a whole week to level up."
Level 5? A week? Challenging? Yue E's delicate forehead furrowed with veins, and she felt an urge to punch this guy.
Unaware of Yue E's reaction, Lu HaiKong continued answering while collecting the dozen or so copper coins the bandits had contributed. He then ventured into the area where the bandits had emerged.
Soon, Lu HaiKong emerged with a broken wooden box. Inside, he found a bandit's employment certificate and over twenty copper coins, which left him slightly disappointed due to the meager amount and useless items.
Lu HaiKong then shared half the money with Yue E, surprising her as she hadn't expected him to do so. After a moment's thought, she accepted without refusal.
Lu HaiKong and Yue E continued along the mountain path, encountering more bandits who were swiftly dealt with by Lu HaiKong. The initial waves were handled solely by him, as the bandits were foolish and easily defeated due to his weapon advantage and Level 5 Basic Axe Technique.
However, with the easily defeated bandits, Lu HaiKong and Yue E's loot was minimal. After four waves, they each gained only a hundred or so copper coins and a manual for Basic Sword Technique, which Lu HaiKong seemed uninterested in.
By the fifth wave, Lu HaiKong felt the challenge increase. This time, five bandits appeared, well-equipped with refined longswords and red-feathered spears. Lu HaiKong checked their attributes and felt a sense of foreboding.
The bandits' attributes were as follows:
Bandit (LV: 5)
