Chapter 10: Even Lord Rank Must Fall
Chapter 10: Even Lord Rank Must Fall
Lin Hanchuan’s instincts prickled. Furrowing his brow, he shifted his stance and adjusted his angle of sight to check the spot where the Brutal Demon had fallen.
“The corpse’s gone? But it hasn’t been long enough for it to vanish automatically.”
Only one possibility remained.
In the dim warehouse, a brilliant white light now blazed—Evolution Light.
In Descent Online, wild monsters could ascend their ranks through evolution, growing stronger under certain conditions. Some demon races, when reaching their evolutionary threshold, could consume other beings to trigger metamorphosis.
Earlier, the ogre disguised as the Blackbearded Elder had already reached the peak of Elite Rank. Its impatience to devour Lin and break into Lord Rank had forced it to reveal its true form. Evolution drove such urgency.
Now, the Evolution Light in the warehouse could only mean one thing—the Dark Claw Demon had consumed the Brutal Demon’s corpse to evolve.
“Clever,” Lin mused. No wonder the elite demon had targeted the Brutal Demon from the start. Devour it, evolve into Lord Rank.
Evolution left monsters vulnerable, but Lin hesitated to charge in. The warehouse might still harbor traps, and the reward for slaying a Lord Rank demon—the First Kill—far exceeded anything from previous foes.
He flicked his wrist, hurling Water Ball after Water Ball. Puddles spread until the floor gleamed with inches of water.
“Enough.” Flooding the warehouse forced the demon out without reckless risks.
A soft splish-splash echoed as the Evolution Light faded. From the shadows emerged a lithe figure—her violet eyes gleaming, claws scraping like sharpening blades.
“I thought you’d flood this place with Water Ball Level 1 forever,” the Dark Claw Demon taunted. “Few Mages could sustain that mana drain.”
She tilted her head, studying him. “Your talent’s wasted. Devouring you will surely lift me higher!”
Her stats flashed in Lin’s mind:
[Dark Claw Demon]
Rank: 5 | Class: Lord Rank
Health: 2300 | Attack: 150–400
Prefers tearing opponents’ chests open. 20% stat boost in darkness.
Lin smirked. She’d gained rank—but only to Lord Rank. At level 5, her signature skill, Claw Rupture, remained a weak spatial attack. A level 10 demon’s version would rip space itself, striking from ten meters away.
“You’re confident, for a demon with poor manners,” Lin said.
He raised his hand—Fireball Level 1.
The demon laughed. “Still playing with toys?” Fireballs splashed around her feet, erupting into steam.
Lin switched—Water Ball Level 1.
The first strike landed. —11 HP.
Probability dictated Water Ball’s Haste Reduction debuff triggered only sometimes. But Lin’s casting speed—blisteringly fast—turned chance into certainty. Three stacks of Haste Reduction triggered Freeze.
The air crystallized. Fireballs had vaporized the puddles into mist; now, Water Balls turned that mist into frost. The warehouse became an ice chamber.
The demon froze, her body sheathed in ice. Another Water Ball struck——15 HP, then —16, —19.
Each impact pierced her with ice shards. She stared, disbelieving.
“I’m Lord Rank now! How—?!”
Ice sealed her lips.
