Chapter 1: Fang Xing
Chapter 1: Fang Xing
Star Calendar 717.
In the Maple Leaf City of Chu Yao Star, within the second class of Grade 10 at Yu Cai High School...
"In the first year of the Star Calendar, humanity entered the interstellar age. The first light-speed spacecraft, the 'Explorer', discovered 'Thundercloud Star' and confirmed the existence of extraterrestrial intelligent beings. Thus, the third kind of contact began..."
History teacher Lan Fei exuded an air of sophistication, donning a black waistcoat that accentuated her slender legs, while a captivating curve at the hollow of her chest and a glimpse of smooth, milky skin left many boys in the class discreetly swallowing their saliva.
Even Fang Xing, who was daydreaming and slacking off, had to admit that she was a stunning beauty, one that hit the sweet spot for most teenage boys.
For most adolescents going through puberty, an elegant and mature beauty like Lan Fei was far more appealing than a youthful girl.
Lan Fei's voice was smooth and rounded, yet carried a hint of gravity as she continued, "And so, the great age of interstellar discovery commenced. In the same year, the Lanxing Federation was established, marking the beginning of humanity's most glorious era, until..."
With a subtle shift in her gaze, she called out, "Fang Xing, please tell the class about the 'Great Catastrophe Day'."
Fang Xing started at the sound of his name. "Yes, teacher," he said as he stood up.
He appeared to be around sixteen or seventeen years old, with a slender build and the youthful vigor and freshness evident in his school uniform's white shirt. However, his eyes held a hint of doubt and apprehension.
'I... have time-traveled...'
Fang Xing's heart raced with tumultuous thoughts. In his previous life, he had been an ordinary corporate slave on Earth, tirelessly toiling away at his demanding job. His only hobby was reading novels, and he never imagined that one day, he would fall asleep while reading and wake up in a classroom in a different world.
The tangible reality of his surroundings and the additional set of memories in his mind left him feeling conflicted.
Fortunately, he had a naturally calm demeanor, and although he had been quietly observing and processing these new memories, his teacher had noticed something amiss.
'I thought my skill of zoning out, perfected during my university days, was unparalleled. I never expected a future teacher to see through it...' Fang Xing's thoughts raced. 'Lanxing Federation? Is this Earth's future? Have I traveled to another world or to the future?'
Fang Xing's mind buzzed with questions, but a nudge from the boy next to him brought him back to the present, and he collected himself to answer based on the knowledge from his newfound memories:
"Great Catastrophe Day stems from the 112th year of the Star Calendar. By then, the Lanxing Federation had discovered over a hundred life-bearing planets, and interstellar exploration had become the hottest trend. Every interstellar explorer was a celebrity, celebrated and revered. Humanity indulged in the fruits of interstellar exploration, and technological advancements exploded... It was a golden age, until the first of November, when the interstellar explorer 'Kelin' discovered the 'Dog Rong Star'. The Dog Rong natives were war-crazed and exceptionally ferocious. They annihilated the entire fleet and accessed the coordinates of the Lanxing Federation from the onboard supercomputer, marking the beginning of their war against the Federation..."
"In the 119th year, the Lanxing Federation's mighty army pushed back and defeated the Dog Rong natives. However, it was only when our forces raided their sacred temples that we realized the horrifying truth—these bloodthirsty and technologically advanced beings, who seemed to embody a paradox of savagery and sophistication, were merely servants of another interstellar race, the 'Rose Tribe', and above them existed an even more terrifying presence!"
"Mankind faced an even crueler trial. The Federation plunged into a protracted war spanning hundreds of years. Later, through a vote by the citizens of the Federation, the 'Omniscient Brain' passed a resolution to commemorate the first of November as Great Catastrophe Day..."
Fang Xing spoke with confidence and fluency.
"Well done, you may sit down..."
Lan Fei gave Fang Xing a subtle nod of approval, her voice heavy with emotion. "We once believed that the mainstream races in the universe were civilized, much like the 'Giant Rock Tribe' and the 'Wood God Star People' we had encountered before. But after the Great Catastrophe Day, we learned that in the dark cosmos, madness is the norm. The Dog Rong Tribe and the forces behind them are the true cancer of the universe!"
"Throughout the hundreds of years of war, the Lanxing Federation suffered immeasurable losses. Even so, our civilization never yielded to those extradimensional evil gods!"
...
Fang Xing sat down, his mind still reeling.
He examined the textbook in his hands, which seemed to be made of ordinary paper yet had no weight at all. It felt like a sci-fi projection of some sort.
On the cover was the title, "Extraterrestrial Race Compendium". He flipped through the pages and found the section on the Dog Rong Tribe, noticing that the illustration had been deliberately blurred, resembling silhouettes of dog-headed humanoids.
Below the illustration was a label—Lower Servant Race!
A few pages after the Dog Rong Tribe, there was a shadowy figure shrouded in black mist, labeled as the Rose Tribe, an Upper Affined Race!
"Evil god affined race..." Fang Xing murmured to himself.
In the depths of the vast universe, there existed extradimensional evil gods who loomed above all other alien races, lurking in the profound dimensions, embracing madness and terror as their companions. These beings were unimaginably powerful and were the arch-nemeses of the Lanxing Federation and other advanced alien civilizations.
Even the mere servants and followers of these evil gods possessed the might to annihilate entire elementary civilizations!
However, these extradimensional evil gods were not entirely invincible, or the Lanxing Federation would have long been eradicated.
Fang Xing turned to the last page of the "Extraterrestrial Race Compendium", and before his eyes appeared an image of a star that seemed to have gone extinct.
In the description beside it, it boldly recorded:
【Thundercruncher Kreigtrum, the main body is a star, the first 'Extradimensional Evil God' killed by the Lanxing Federation, ranked as a Lower Dominator!】
'Lower rank? Are there tiers among the Extradimensional Evil Gods as well? The Federation included this in the textbook to boost morale, but this 'extinct star' is definitely not its true form. It is said that most of these evil gods have the 'unviewable' attribute, causing anyone who lays eyes on them to have their sanity collapse... Even their subordinate clans have similar insanity-inducing traits. According to scientists' speculations, this 'blind foolishness' domain or authority may be related to them having the same source or object of worship... But this speculation is quite hopeless, implying that above the 'Extradimensional Evil Gods' is an even higher-tier existence akin to a 'Creator'...'
Fang Xing pondered silently to himself.
Just then, the bell rang to signal the end of class.
"And that's all for today, class. Goodbye, everyone..."
On the podium, the fiery-figured Teacher Lan Fei waved her hand with a smile, her form becoming illusory and then disappearing.
"Ah, it was just a projection again..."
Liu Wei, sitting next to him, let out a cry of dismay.
Fang Xing watched as the textbook in his hand also vanished, and he couldn't help but nod in understanding.
The Federation's current teaching methods and tools all utilized projections, but the sense of realism far surpassed that of 3D technology.
Liu Wei was the same age as Fang Xing and had been his deskmate and friend in his previous life. He had a slightly receding hairline and a face dotted with acne, a common issue for teenagers.
He turned to Fang Xing and complained, "I don't get it. Didn't the Federation announce that they had successfully developed a 'learning device' that directly injects knowledge into our brains? Why do we still have to come to school and waste our time? I want to work more to pay off my loan and buy the house I'm currently renting..."
Fang Xing sighed, "The main reason is that the upcoming 'Martial Arts class' requires physical instruction. Even a projected person won't do, because the elusive 'Martial Arts Will' is something that even advanced technology struggles to replicate. The human mind is far more complex than any science... And there are safety and moral concerns with injecting knowledge directly into our brains. If there were ill-intentioned cultists who tampered with the curriculum, the consequences would be disastrous..."
"Morals? What morals do we 'cyborgs' have to speak of?"
Liu Wei spread his hands helplessly, feeling exasperated.
Fang Xing fell silent as he recalled the background of his namesake from his previous life.
With the advancement of technology, human reproductive concepts were also evolving.
Compounded by the pressures of war, issues like an aging population and low birth rates became more prominent... After the Great Catastrophe, the Lanxing Federation passed a series of bills encouraging citizens to donate their eggs and sperm, which would then be randomly paired and incubated in cultivation chambers, with the resulting children being raised collectively.
These individuals were known as 'cyborgs', while those born through the ancient tradition of gestation in the womb were called 'naturals'.
'So, I was pretty much an orphan from the start?'
As Fang Xing skimmed through this memory, he couldn't help but feel a surge of mixed emotions.
'But at least it's similar to being a test-tube baby, incubated externally for ten months... The Federation still had some conscience, not resorting to cloning or genetic manipulation. If I think about it carefully, my original parents might even still be alive and holding high positions in the Federation...'
Why would they hold high positions? Naturally, because the more outstanding the genes, the more valuable the offspring! If those undergoing artificial insemination had a choice, they would undoubtedly opt for the genes of Nobel laureates or Olympic champions.
What truly saddened Fang Xing was that he was born already owing the Federation a substantial sum in 'upbringing fees', akin to being born with a loan hanging over his head. If he couldn't repay it by the time he became an adult, he would be forced into assigned labor to work off his debt, most likely on the front lines as a soldier...
Just as he was lost in his thoughts, the classroom environment underwent a drastic change!
The textbooks, pens, and other teaching tools disappeared, and the desks and chairs sank into the floor, revealing a smooth, spotless floor.
Soon after, a tall, muscular man in his thirties with yellow skin strode into the room. He was wearing a military-green, sweat-soaked shirt that showcased his bulging muscles.
When Fang Xing's eyes met his, he felt a chill run down his spine.
'This person is definitely not a projection. He's a real, living person and a formidable martial artist... Hmm, he's Fang Xing's martial arts teacher, Xia Long, I presume? I wonder what level of cultivation he's attained?'
'In this world, the ancient martial arts of the Blue Star have taken on a new vitality after coming into contact with advanced alien technology, becoming one of the most popular evolutionary paths for humanity, and 'martial artist' has become one of the most prevalent 'professions'...'
Fang Xing lowered his eyelids, but his heart was filled with anticipation.
