A War Between Spies Chapter 14 - Lovers

John finally gave in after a brief and rather intense argument.

“Jenny, you are actually harming our daughter this way. Have you fully considered this decision?”

“I am very clear on what I have decided. What about you? Have you ever considered what your daughter wants?”

Jenny did not show any weakness. The heated exchange between the two ended with John relenting, “Kate, you can be a leg.”

Kate responded as if she was a cat whose tail had been stepped on, “No! I do not want to be a leg. I want to be a hand! You cannot appease me with something like this. I am not a rookie who does not know anything. I can do a lot. You cannot assign me to be a mere leg!”

John responded, “I have told you this many times; each team member’s role is equally important!”

Kate replied without relenting, “If that is the case, you should be a leg and hand over your brain role to Kadipur!”

The Pakistani Indian, Kadipur, wryly said, “Sorry, but I do not want to be involved in the emotional exchange between you: father and daughter pair. Please consider the fact that I am right here before using me as an item for your argument.”

Kate looked at Kadipur and said, “Sorry, I did not mean it that way.”

John waved his hand angrily at Kate, “Enough. You and Ross are a pair. Both of you will stick together and disguise yourselves. That way it will be fine even if both of you are caught on camera. Also, you will explain the basic rules to him later. That is final!”

Kate quickly replied, “I refuse. I do not want to be a leg. I definitely do not want to be paired with him!”

“Stop! As long as I am the team leader, you will do as I say! You can either follow my orders or form a new team with your mother. Make a decision!”

John seemed to have truly lost all patience with her. Kate hesitated for a moment. She looked at Yang Yi her eyes full of resentment, “Fine, I will do as you say, so you need to promise to give me the role of a hand next time. Dad…”

Kate whined and acted like a spoiled child. John helplessly said, “Ok, ok.

“That is all for today. Everyone can leave and focus on their individual tasks.”

The whole group stood up and made their way towards the door. “I will be going out for a while. do not forget what you need to do,” John said to Kate.

The only ones left in the room after everyone departed were Yang Yi and Kate.

The atmosphere in the room was awkward.

How could John leave this stranger alone with his daughter? Was he not worried that his daughter might beat this stranger to death?

Yang Yi cursed in silence since he could not express his discomfort on his face. Kate looked at him as if she was disgusted and asked, “Do you hate me?”

“I do not.”

“Liar... You looked at me...”

“Stop! You cannot say something so careless. That was obviously an accident. You beat me up and I apologized. Miss Kate, it is not right for you to be so unreasonable.”

“You obviously hate me to death and you are not brave enough to admit it. You are truly incompetent and pretentious. What a pretender,” Kate disdainfully said.

Yang Yi was seething in anger. He managed to control his tone when replying, “I will forgive you for your ignorance and impertinence since you are a violent person with just muscles and no brain.”

Kate gritted her teeth. Her face turned white with anger, “You dare to say I have no brains? Where did you get the confidence? You can only speak utter nonsense!”

Kate was too lazy to continue arguing with Yang Yi. She turned away from him and spoke to the empty room, “It is a waste of time talking to an incompetent wastrel. However, there is no way I can ignore my dad’s instructions which means you should just listen to what I have to say.”

There was a long list of vulgar words Yang Yi wanted to use to provoke Kate. He chose to endure her attitude instead. It would not be smart of him to continue to quarrel with a woman who could beat him up. Plus, Yang Yi needed to take this opportunity and learn more about things.

Yang Yi decided to shut up. No benefits would be gained from arguing with a violent woman that was full of prejudice.

Kate was reassured after the small victory. She continued to speak to Yang Yi with a tone full of disdain and a proud attitude, “If you have anything to ask, ask it quickly. I still need to finish my task. This is my first time participating in the core team’s mission. I do not want you to ruin it.”

Yang Yi took a few deep breaths before asking in a patient tone, “What exactly is a hand? What is a leg? What are the tasks assigned to everyone? What is the task assigned to me?”

“A team is like a person. Ryan and Wales are hands. They will carry out the task of stealing the intelligence. My mom is the face. She is a disguise artist. Daniel holds the role of the team’s eyes and ears. He is a hacker. Kadipur is a leg. He is responsible for transporting people to and from places. A leg will sometimes assume the role of surveillance personnel, as well. I am a foot. You are my subordinate and assistant. My dad is the brain. He is responsible for coordinating and directing the entire body.”

Yang Yi let out a breath, “And what do you do?”

Kate smiled proudly, “I can do everything. What else can you do besides drive, which any adult on the street knows how to do?”

Yang Yi did not have a response. Besides driving, he did not have any other skills. He realized shortly after this second confrontation with Kate that he was now placed at a disadvantage. 

Kate stood up. She looked like a proud and victorious general, “If you are going to be a leg, you should make sure you do a good job in the role. So, we will find out the address for Anthony and then we will go check out the different routes.”

Yang Yi asked in an indifferent tone, “Why do we need to check out the routes? Are you saying we will need to escape?”

Kate still had to answer Yang Yi’s questions even though she hated him and did not think he deserved respect.

“Whether we need to escape or simply transport people, we should do our best not to leave behind any evidence. An operation could fail at any time; we need to be able to escape quickly. The value of a leg is shown in this type of situation. It is a necessary part of the preparations. It is not something that can be overlooked even though the situation I mentioned has never happened before. You are really stupid; you do not even know this basic information.”

Yang Yi still needed to bear her intolerable attitude for a little while longer.

He took another deep breath. He maintained a calm tone as he said, “There is no need to look for the address. I already know the location of Anthony Investment Company.”

“You know the address? Great, we should get going. We will need to get some things first so we can cover up your disgusting face.”

Yang could not tolerate her insults anymore. “Do you know how to do anything other than insult people when you talk?” he retorted.

Kate replied cheerfully, “I like insulting you. You can insult me too.”

“You definitely do not have a boyfriend,” Yang Yi said gritting his teeth.

“What does that have to do with you?”

“You definitely do not have a boyfriend because you have short legs, an awful figure, and no fashion sense. The way you speak is repulsive and you are also narrow-minded. Obviously, no one would want to date you. ”

It was not a big deal for a woman to have bodily imperfections. However, the way people mentioned those imperfections to them was definitely a big deal.

Kate’s eyes widened and her hand curled into a fist.

“Look at you. You are angry. Ha!” Yang Yi said.

Kate took a deep breath before uncurling her fist. She smiled at Yang Yi, “I know your standards now you sissy, pretty boy. Not only are you ignorant, but you also have poor eyesight. You will never meet a beauty of my caliber in your entire life. You are hopeless.”

Kate continued talking carelessly. When she was done, she said casually, “Just follow me, you pathetic guy. It will be fine as long as you are not a hindrance. All you have to do is listen to my orders.”

Yang Yi let out a dispirited sighed and eventually followed her.

A red Mini Cooper was parked in front of the house. Kate stood next to the car and took out the keys from her pocket. She dangled the keys in front of Yang Yi and said disdainfully, “You will drive. I do not need to tell you the consequences of not being able to drive properly, right?”

Yang Yi adjusted the driver’s seat. He could not allow his emotions to affect what he needed to do. He gave up on the idea of breaking any traffic laws after taking a deep breath and placing his hands on the steering wheel. He ended up driving leisurely in traffic to their destination.

When they were driving past a sportswear specialty store Kate suddenly said, “Stop the car. Come find me in the store after you park the car.”

Yang Yi did not ask why. It took him longer than he thought necessary to find a parking spot. Kate was waiting for him with a pile of clothes next to her when he entered the store.

“Go change into this.”

Yang Yi took the clothes without saying a word and went to the dressing room to change.

He looked like a hip-hop artist after putting on the baggy pants, hoodie, glittering hat and a pair of red sneakers.

Yang Yi did not say anything when he came out of the dressing room. Kate stretched out her hand to tip the hat sideways before nodding, “You look much better now. Go pay for it so we can leave.”

Yang Yi left the store with Kate after packing up his old clothes. He asked because he could not help himself, “If we are just going to check out the routes, why do I need to wear this?”

Kate stared at him blankly and said, “This may seem pointless but it is not. If everything goes well, of course, these preparations will seem rather unnecessary. You will be happy you did not leave any evidence behind if the operation fails though. In the event that your face can be identified, you will be arrested. I am only telling you this so you do not drag the rest of the team down with you. I would rather not tell you anything. Just do your best to remember everything I say and follow my instructions.”

He was dissatisfied with Kate’s attitude, but Yang Yi knew he had to accumulate this simple knowledge and experience bit by bit from her. Yang Yi sighed and softly said, “Okay. Thank you.”

Kate glanced at Yang Yi and said, “We should leave now. It is time to check out all the potential routes surrounding Anthony.”
