Chapter 946: Chapter 657: The Mysterious Curse Chapter 946: Chapter 657: The Mysterious Curse It must be said, facing the sudden request from Duanmu Huai, Master Kelben was utterly bewildered.
It was not that he had never considered that the Tribunal would try to find places to preach; in fact, many believers did such things, approaching local rulers with hopes to spread their faith… Many churches in Deepwater City were established this way.
However…
“I can understand your thoughts, but the situation in Deepwater City is complicated, and I personally…”
“I think you misunderstand my point, Master Kelben.”
Duanmu Huai waved his hand, interrupting Kelben's excuses.
“I'm not interested in Deepwater City. I hope you can introduce me to a more dangerous territory, preferably one swarming with monsters, largely uninhabited, a place of no return, rumored to be filled with curses and death… As the founder of Star Moon, you must have more information than I do.”
“Er…”
Hearing this, Master Kelben was somewhat stunned, his gaze towards Duanmu Huai changing several times. It had to be said, Duanmu Huai's request was truly odd. Rather than preaching, it sounded more like seeking an adventure. What surprised Kelben even more was Duanmu Huai's mention earlier. Few knew about Kelben leaving the Harpist Alliance to create Star Moon, yet the Tribunal seemed to have even obtained such information.
Of course, Kelben didn't know that players had practically turned the world's historical information upside down, not even sparing his ancestors.
Of course, the reason why Duanmu Huai made such a request was not for thrill-seeking. In fact, the thinner the boundary between subspace and reality in such places, the easier it was for the Evil God to influence the real world through subspace, much like how a virus would first attack someone with low immunity. In such areas, even if thousands of people died, it would not be a matter of great concern. Try causing the death of so many near Deepwater City, and Kelben would have intervened long ago.
The more people who died in a place, the weaker the barrier between subspace and reality became. With some manipulation, subspace could easily be connected. The plague in Neverwinter City was just like that. If Dessel had succeeded and sacrificed the entire population of Neverwinter City, it would have been easy to open the gateway to subspace, and then who knew what kind of monsters or demons would come out.
That's why Duanmu Huai made such an unusual request–to Kelben, a territory swarming with monsters–high death tolls from mutual killings, uninhabited–no investigations or interventions in case of trouble, filled with curses and death–an initial sign of subspace erosion causing various instabilities.
Such conditions very likely indicated the frontline of an Evil God Army invasion.
Building a fortress on the frontline, wasn't that to be expected?
“I must say, your request is indeed very… unexpected.”
After some thought, Master Kelben carefully assessed Duanmu Huai. Honestly, even as wise as he was, he could not understand why the Tribunal would request him to introduce such a place. If it had been Tyler or Tom's Sacred Knights, it would have been understandable, but the Tribunal… Well, perhaps this was a good opportunity to probe their operational style and agenda?
With that thought, Kelben snapped his fingers, and soon, a map flew over from the shelf behind him.
“If that's the case, then I do have a suitable place to suggest.”
While speaking, Kelben placed the map on the table and stretched out his hand.
“Do you know of a wilderness called the Lost Ground, located to the east of the Supreme Forest?”
“Heard of it, never been there.”
“Then that is easy to explain.”
Hearing Duanmu Huai's response, Kelben nodded his head, then furrowed his brows.
“Not to hide it from you, we recently received some news that the Lost Ground seemed to be experiencing troubles.”
“Troubles?”
“The specifics are unclear, it's a place long forgotten, no one cares about its existence. However, in recent times, the cities near the Lost Ground have been experiencing strange occurrences, with some claiming to have seen devils from Hell, and other places have been afflicted with unidentified diseases.”
“Diseases?”
“Yes, according to reports from Noisy Water City, people in the small towns near the Lost Ground… suddenly became infertile.”
“What do you mean, 'suddenly became infertile'?”
Upon hearing this, Duanmu Huai showed a hint of curiosity.
“Put simply, all the children that are born are stillborn.”
“They didn't die from complications during birth or from weakness after birth?”
“No.”
Kelben shook his head.
“From what we know so far, the babies were dead before even being born. Moreover, the appearance of these infants is grotesquely distorted, indeed showing signs of devilish or demonic interference.”
“Oh, so it isn't?”
Hearing Kelben say this, Duanmu Huai felt somewhat speculative.
“Certainly not. In fact, the reason I know about this is that a lady from Locke Town came to Deepwater City seeking help from the Temple. Most of what I've told you was from her account; she said many women in Locke Town had lost their babies and suspected some kind of curse, so she came for help. The Temple did provide assistance, not only dispatching Priests and Sacred Knights to investigate but also especially examining this lady. Yet, it had no effect whatsoever; even under the protection of a Priest, the lady ended up giving birth to a stillborn. According to the Priest's findings, the baby had been dead for many days.”
