Chapter 929: Chapter 649 Stance_2 Chapter 929: Chapter 649 Stance_2 Since Danilo had been found, Amelia decided to complete her own mission first, and then take her time to ponder whether the slaughter of the Drow was truly just.
“Okay, thank you.”
At this moment, Danilo had also calmed down. He nodded to Amelia, took the Sound Transmission Stone from her, and then walked to the other side to start contacting Master Kelben.
And as for this side…
“Miss Amelia, what should we do next?”
Kasim and Roxia were a bit confused at this point, but as Adventurers, they weren't like Amelia, a Sacred Knight with a faith, so they didn't have any special thoughts about the extermination of the Drow. Especially when Gavi said it was just like wiping out a den of Monster like goblins, the two of them quickly accepted this reasoning.
After all, as low-tier Adventurers, they empathized with the suffering lives of the common folk. They toiled hard for a year, and when the time for autumn harvest came, goblins would kill their children and livestock, steal their grain, and burn their homes to the ground–such hatred could only be quenched by the destruction of the other side. Those farmers couldn't care less if destroying a goblin den was an evil act; they just wished all those damned goblins would die.
So, compared to Amelia, Kasim and Roxia were able to get back to normal quite quickly.
“We should hurry back to the surface. To be honest, like the Gnomes said, the Dark Region… it really isn't suited for us.”
“Absolutely.”
Roxia nodded vigorously.
“I still miss the sun and the sky…”
Although the tales of adventure in the Dark Region sung by Bards in the taverns were enticing, once they actually arrived here, they found it was nothing short of a painful Hell.
Now they were eager to get back to the surface to enjoy the warm sunlight and the sea breeze.
“I… maybe I should return to the Temple, to seek Tyler's guidance.”
Amelia hesitated as well; she felt that what she had done before wasn't wrong, but soon realized that after all, she was only Human. She could fight for Humans, for justice, but whether preventing the slaughter of the Drow Elves was just–Amelia didn't have the answer.
The Tribunal was straightforward and blunt: anything that threatened the existence of Humans deserved to die.
Now Amelia truly understood why Duanmu Huai once said justice was a vague and unclear goal.
Was helping the evil Drow a just action?
Was it just to watch the Drow be slaughtered?
What exactly is justice?
At this point, Amelia felt physically and emotionally drained; she only hoped she could return to Tyler's Temple, to think properly and seek guidance from the Deity.
Just then, Danilo returned. Amelia looked at him; she thought he would insist on investigating, but Danilo's reaction was beyond Amelia's expectations.
“I want to leave the Dark Region with you.”
Danilo spoke, his expression serious.
“The Tribunal is an unpredictable force. We must investigate to learn their true intent… so I'm sorry, I cannot continue to pursue this matter with you any longer.”
As he spoke, Danilo bowed to the Drow Elves behind him, who nodded in agreement.
“I can understand your decision, Danilo. This is a matter for my people, and perhaps… it is the fate we must face for our numerous misdeeds.”
The Drow Elf displayed a bitter smile, and Amelia noticed some unusual emotions in her gaze towards Danilo. However, Amelia wisely decided not to concern herself with it.
Soon, the two parties split. Amelia and the others set off on their return journey with Danilo, while the Drow Elves vanished into the shadows as they had always done.
“…Master, they have departed.”
“Hmm, obedient enough.”
Hearing Ogis's report, Duanmu Huai was somewhat surprised. He had actually thought the Harper would pursue the investigation to the end–but no matter, the Tribunal wasn't afraid of that.
What they wanted to do, what they should do, was not for others to dictate.
Contrarily, the matter at hand… well, the mind indeed is a curious thing.
“Keep advancing…! We will spread glory and unite all Drow Elves again!!”
Duanmu Huai silently observed Philray seated in a chair being carried along, his gaze also appearing somewhat strange. The joys of one victory after another had completely warped the Drow Elf's mind. At this moment, she was no longer content with merely being the only Priest esteemed by the Spider Queen–in her eyes, she was the avatar of the Spider Queen!
Indeed, Philray now believed herself to be the daughter of the Spider Queen, the only living descendant left in this world by some method.
Hmm, this reminded Duanmu Huai of those Emperor's Sons burnt at the stake by the Tribunal… he wondered how many of them were like Philray, mentally deranged and claiming they could lead the Imperial to light.
The current Philray bore no resemblance to the timid and prudent Drow Priest she once was. She acted like a Queen, a Tyrant–no one could defy her orders. And her ambitions were growing ever greater; she longed to conquer all civilizations in the Dark Region, then ascend to the surface and dominate the entire world. She firmly believed that under the Spider Queen's leadership, no one could stand against her.
Fortunately, the Drow Elves surrounding her were also not in their right minds–all a group of madmen tainted by mental corruption.
Indeed, tampering with the mind was proving to be a dangerous affair.
Watching Philray intently, Duanmu Huai reaffirmed this thought. Had he chosen to manipulate Philray directly, once her mind deteriorated to this level, she would unquestionably conflict with him and might even defy his orders. But now, it was different. Duanmu Huai was merely influencing her from the shadows, to the extent that not even Philray realized this construct was not a construct.
She believed every thought she had was real, and that her actions were utterly correct, unaffected by anyone else. Her decisions were all her own.
Hmm… but what did that have to do with Duanmu Huai? He was just a simple, harmless construct, after all.
Heh heh (–)b.
