Chapter 923: Chapter 647 Stone City Chapter 923: Chapter 647 Stone City “I never expected the underground to be this dangerous.”
Sitting in a chair and staring around, Amelia sighed, while Kasim and Roxia beside her shared the same sentiment.
“The Judge had warned us that the underground was treacherous, and at the time we still thought we could overcome it. We were far too…naive.”
No wonder the three of them were so exhausted. After parting with Duanmu Huai, they had chosen to enter the Dark Region and had expended tremendous effort to get through the Underground Labyrinth, and then…the nightmare began for the trio.
In the dark underground, the biggest issue was time. This world didn't have watches to tell time, and in the blackness of the underground, inexperienced adventurers had no way to distinguish it, not even knowing how many days they had spent in these pitch-dark tunnels.
Beyond this, the omnipresent monsters and terrifying plants in the Dark Region were equally dangerous.
For instance, luminous moss, which could even spew poison gas, causing any creature that inhaled it to stiffen up and fall to the ground, unable to move. Kasim had accidentally been caught by this, and if Amelia hadn't been a Sacred Knight, he probably wouldn't have been saved.
They also encountered a type of Underground Worm as big as a subway train in the underground. If the three of them hadn't run fast, they would have likely been devoured.
Not to mention, while fleeing from the Underground Worm, Roxia inadvertently became separated from the other two. In the underground where it was impossible to distinguish the directions, you could only see tunnel after tunnel, without any clue where they might lead. They were lucky to reunite–otherwise, they might have been utterly lost in the Dark Region.
Eventually, the trio finally met a patrol team of Underworld Dwarves. Thankfully, the Underworld Dwarves were one of the few kind races in the Dark Region, and they offered hospitality and a place for the trio to recover in their city, which somewhat eased their exhaustion.
“I never imagined the Dark Region could be so terrifying.”
Roxia curled up in her chair, the warm drink in her hands unable to chase away the chills in her heart. She still remembered the desperate running when chased by the Underground Worm, and realizing that she was utterly alone when she regained her senses–without even knowing where she was.
Getting lost in a forest or at sea wouldn't panic Roxia; she could determine directions by the sky or by climbing trees. But in the dark underground caves, Roxia felt a kind of desperate fear for the first time. She was helpless, unable to do anything. She couldn't possibly break through the thick crust of the earth, nor determine the cardinal directions, let alone up, down, left, or right. The numerous tunnels were so indistinguishable she couldn't confirm which one she had run through because they all looked the same.
Even if Roxia shouted out with all her courage, the echoes that floated through the caverns made it impossible for her to discern where the sounds actually came from.
“I now understand why so many adventurers meet their end here.”
Kasim nodded in agreement, the eagerness he had when setting out now nowhere to be seen. He had naively believed that having passed the trials of Neverwinter City, he should be able to stand his ground in the Dark Region.
But reality had told him otherwise.
This place was like a Bottomless Abyss, a giant maw, mercilessly swallowing all foolish enough to intrude.
“So should we continue with our mission?”
Amelia asked her two companions, looking at them intently. They had come here not out of curiosity or for mere adventure but upon the commission of Deepwater City Archmage Kelben's Black Wand, to rescue his nephew–although, to be honest, even Amelia doubted that in a place like the Dark Region, even Kelben's nephew would have much chance of survival.
She had courteously inquired with the Underworld Dwarves before, but was told they had never seen such a group, a response which left Amelia feeling somewhat helpless.
“This is the Dark Region, surface dweller.”
Just then, an Underworld Dwarf came over and placed the food on their table.
“Adventurers often come here from the surface, venturing into the Dark Region, but many of them never return.”
“So what do you think happens to them?”
“Perhaps they are captured by Gray Dwarves or Drow and Spirit Absorbing Monsters to be made slaves, or perhaps they die in some unknown corner of the Dark Region, becoming food for the underground creatures.”
The Underworld Dwarf watched the three of them and shook his head.
“If you ask me, you're young and there's no need to waste your time here. Better to return to the surface.”
“Hey, speaking of Drow, have you heard the recent news?”
Just as the Dwarf waiter was chatting with them, another Underworld Dwarf drinking nearby suddenly spoke up.
“Do you mean the war among the Drow? By the Stone above, isn't that just a rumor?”
“Hey, it's far more than a rumor!”
This Underworld Dwarf seemed quite excited. He took a big gulp of his drink and then slammed the table.
“The Expedition Leader took his survey team to see for themselves! According to what he said, that Drow Elf city has been completely destroyed!”
