Chapter 803: Chapter 569: Deep into the Core Chapter 803: Chapter 569: Deep into the Core A flash of white brilliance flickered by.
The next moment, Duanmu Huai and Mary only felt a blur before their eyes, and then they both appeared in a peculiar space.
Here, one couldn't make out anything; at least, in Duanmu Huai's view, all around were walls and staircases made up of various characters and numbers. To be honest, it was even a bit dizzying to look at for too long.
Just then, Lumiaire's voice sounded in their ears.
[“You've successfully entered the Reapers' network. How does it feel?”]
“It feels terrible. I really want you to see this mess. There are chaotic and nonsensical characters everywhere, on the floor, in the sky, on the walls.”
[“Then it seems you've entered successfully. Oh, by the way, here's something for you.”]
As Lumiaire's voice rang out, Duanmu Huai saw a dagger materialize out of thin air and land in his hand.
“What's this?”
[“A viral dagger, essentially an evolved version of the one we used against Skynet and the Terminators. Since these Reapers are somewhat similar to the Terminators, I think it should be just as useful.”]
“Infect, overload, self-destruct? I do like the sound of that.”
Duanmu Huai toyed with the Virus Dagger for a moment and then turned to survey his surroundings, where all sorts of towers and roads were composed of these characters.
“So, where do we go from here?”
[“Sorry, I haven't yet been able to fully comprehend the Reapers' system… In simple terms, you're now at the communication hub of the Reapers' network port. As for where to go next… I might need to analyze it a bit more.”]
“How long will that take?”
[“At least an hour.”]
“That's too much trouble.”
Hearing Lumiaire's reply, Duanmu Huai frowned and turned to look at Mary.
“Mary, it's up to you now.”
“Huh? But I'm not a hacker, and I don't understand this stuff…”]
“That doesn't matter. What's important is your right eye…”]
As he spoke, Duanmu Huai pointed at Mary's Golden Pupil.
“Do you see anything unusual?”
“Um…”]
At Duanmu Huai's inquiry, Mary blinked and looked around. After a moment of hesitation, she raised her hand and pointed down one of the paths.
“I did see a golden light coming from this direction…”]
“Golden light? Where?”
Duanmu Huai looked in the direction Mary was pointing, but aside from the tadpole-like characters, he couldn't see anything.
“Huh? It's right here… Coming up from the ground and going over there…”]
“You can actually make that out, huh?”
“Ugh… I don't know? When I saw that light, I just felt like I should go this way…”]
Impressive, Golden Pupil. Truly impressive.
“Then let's go. You lead the way.”
“Huh? But what if it's wrong…”]
“If it's wrong, we'll deal with it then. We're taking a chance anyway, don't worry, I'll keep an eye on you.”
“Ah, okay…”]
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's words, Mary could only nod her head and then she lifted her gaze and started walking down the path.
Duanmu Huai had no idea what Mary was seeing, but he was simply following behind her, watching as Mary turned left, then right, left, then right, up and down, left and right… However, weirdly enough, although Mary's route seemed quite eccentric, it was unexpectedly smooth; moreover, the most mysterious part was that pathways would automatically appear where there seemed to be none as Mary walked past.
For instance, places that looked like sheer cliffs would sprout characters forming bridges as Mary approached; walls that seemed to tower into the clouds would open up a passage when Mary reached them…
[“I can't believe this…”]
Even though Duanmu Huai didn't know what Lumiaire could see on her end, her voice came through quite shaken.
“What's the matter?”
[“How did you manage this? You've passed through several firewalls without triggering an alarm and even entered directly into the backend of the central control system… Normally, this is something only system admins or hackers with access keys can do!”]
“Even if you say that…”]
Hearing Lumiaire's question, Duanmu Huai simply chuckled and then looked forwards to Mary, who was glancing around left and right.
“One could say that someone found the right path.”
Indeed, just as Lumiaire had said, diving deep into the system to search was not an easy task. After all, only the user themselves would likely know which route was safe. For others, without a way to find the correct path, they naturally had to resort to hacking or forcefully breaking in.
But Mary knew.
Though she was clueless about programming and far from being a hacker, to the Golden Pupil, there were no secrets in this world. It could see the truth and the essence of everything; thus, the routes invisible to others were alarmingly clear to Mary's eyes, as noticeable as traffic signs on a highway.
Put simply, while Duanmu Huai was lost, Mary's Golden Pupil had built-in navigation.
“Rustle rustle rustle———-!”
The characters surged and parted, revealing a passage inside which Mary and Duanmu Huai walked through. Next, they arrived inside a colossal structure reminiscent of a temple. Contrary to the outside, the space was bathed in pure white, with only a peculiar, multi-faceted sphere floating above the altar upfront, emitting a blinding golden radiance piercing the skies.
