Chapter 800: Chapter 567 Confrontation_2 Chapter 800: Chapter 567 Confrontation_2 “Everyone, prepare. Target – Reapers, attack!!”
Swiftly following Kislyov's command, the Star Alliance Fleet joined the battle against the Reapers.
Compared to the already fighting Kislyov, Duanmu Huai and his comrades… well, they actually seemed to be watching a show.
“Go, go, blast these guys into oblivion!”
Standing on the bridge, watching the fires nearby, Ann was hopping around excitedly. It wasn't surprising that she was thrilled. After all, she had a front-row seat to the spectacle. Even if sounds didn't exist in space, the sight of massive metal monsters getting blown to pieces in a hail of cannon fire, with debris scattering all around, was enough to make one's blood boil. This made Ann feel so excited that she wanted to join the fight herself — of course, that was impossible.
Even if her magic was super powerful, Ann could not single-handedly defeat a Reaper Battleship.
Most of the people around Duanmu Huai had already experienced space wars before and were just observing the battlefield with excitement and curiosity. Only Mary stood still, her hands and feet ice cold, too terrified to move — everything felt completely different from what she had seen in movies or on TV.
There were none of the bombarding noises or light-flashing sound effects from the movies or TV series. Standing by the window, looking at the battlefield, it even felt like they were watching a silent black and white film. Yet, whenever a fireball appeared and a gigantic metal monstrosity nearby exploded, the pressure it put on Mary was far greater than anything she'd ever felt watching a movie in a theater.
The Reapers' attacks were relentless, but so were the Tribunal and the Star Union. They knew that if they allowed the Reapers to breach their lines and land on any planet, it would be a disaster. That's why they had to intercept the Reapers here, no matter what!
Strictly speaking, the number of Reapers was more than the combined forces of the Tribunal and Star Union; but Duanmu Huai had anticipated this. In addition to positioning their main fleet at the center of the battlefield, he had purposely retained three separate fleets to prevent the Reapers from outflanking them.
In fact, the Reapers had indeed attempted this tactic. They launched a fierce attack on the Star Union and Tribunal's joint forces, then as the defenders were distracted, they split another fleet to bypass them directly. Luckily, it was discovered by the Tribunal's patrol fleet and blocked.
This just showed that the Reapers were cunning.
Truthfully, what had appeared here was only the main force of the Tribunal and the First and Third Fleet of the Star Union. The Fifth and Seventh Fleets abstained from the battle, instead they were tasked with defending various human star systems. After all, no one knew what trickery these Reapers might pull.
If while they were occupied in front, the enemy silently attacked their homes in the rear, they would be left crying without a place to do so.
The distinctive ability of the Star Union to work this way was due to the strength of the Tribunal's fleet, which was able to resist the Reapers. If it were another race trying to do the same, it would be equivalent to giving the Reapers a chance to break through their defenses fleet by fleet.
However, the battle did not end quickly.
The reason was simple – there were just too many Reapers.
“Mr. Duanmu, will there be a problem?”
Looking at the battlefield in front of her, the originally thrilled Ann started to get worried — of course, mostly because she was tired.
“Hmm… it's indeed a bit troublesome, I didn't expect there would be so many.”
There were so many players in the game, much more than the locusts, hence Duanmu Huai didn't need to consider the number of Reapers at the time. But now it seemed like a big problem. They had already eliminated tens of thousands of Reapers since the start of the battle, but the Reapers just kept coming, acting like they were going to wear them down with swarm tactics. This indeed felt like fighting a swarm of bugs.
The Star Union First Fleet was almost on the brink of collapsing. Some of the warships even had to retreat from the battlefield due to a lack of ammunition… there was nothing they could do. Even the Star Union probably didn't expect that the fighting would be so troublesome.
“Ah… it's so infuriating, I want to join the battle too!!”
Ann was so angry, she felt like jumping around, while Greiya helplessly held her back.
“Ann, calm down. You going out there won't help either.”
“Huh… I know, but it feels so frustrating. It's not the same as fighting on our own. We can only watch from the sidelines…”
As she reached this point, Ann couldn't help but start complaining with a pout. Ann wasn't wrong though. If it were a land battle, in situations like this, both Ann and Greiya could eliminate many enemies just by tossing a fireball. But in space, there was almost no room for them to exert their abilities. Plus, the enemy were Reapers, not the usual adversaries, hence Duanmu Huai wasn't considering any sort of clustered combat. This meant they could do nothing but watch the show.
That was a little upsetting.
As cool as spaceship battles are, they are no fun if you're not involved in them.
“Mr. Duanmu, please give me a warship. I want to join the battle too! Assault! Basically, a direct assault from behind!”
You too plan for a barge-in charge, huh?
Hearing Ann's outcry, Duanmu Huai could only roll his eyes.
“Alright, take a break if you're tired. This battle won't end anytime soon.”
“Huh? You want me to sleep here? Are you not afraid that I might be blown up while asleep?”
Not only was this what Ann was saying, but it was also what Mary was thinking. The fighting outside was fierce, and even though there was no sound, who could fall asleep in such a situation?
“There's no choice, currently the Tribunal's fleet is outnumbered by the Reapers, we can only rely on firepower and defenses.”
“Hmm… but to sleep here…”
However, just when Ann was about to finish her sentence, a Reaper suddenly spread its claws and shot a dazzling red beam directly at the warship where they were, which hit the Void Shield and disappeared. Then a volley of macro cannons from their side instantly blew up that metal cephalopod into fragments.
“…I think I'll keep watching.”
“If you're tired, why not go to Venus Island for some rest?”
“Huh? But Mr. Duanmu, you won't go right?”
“Of course, I can't leave.”
After all, the Tribunal's warships were all controlled by puppets, and the puppets were under Duanmu Huai's command. Essentially, Duanmu Huai was now dictating a real-time strategy game in his mind. If he were to leave, the entire fleet would collapse immediately.
This wasn't a game, where he could simply press the ESC button and pause everything.
“Hmmm…”
Hearing Duanmu Huai's response, Ann let out a resigned sigh.
“Well, I'll stay here then.”
