Chapter 781: Chapter 556 Unexpected Discovery_1 Chapter 781: Chapter 556 Unexpected Discovery_1 To be honest, Duanmu Huai wasn't surprised that monsters were underground. After all, in this world, monsters were either underwater or underground. It's just that he really didn't like being underground. The reason was simple —- the underground tunnels tend to be narrow and tricky to travel through. For Duanmu Huai, he'd avoid going if he could, after all, getting stuck could be a real problem.
However……
“Eh? But what about those corpses afterwards?”
“Highly likely they were taken by the monsters.”
“Are they that smart? Wait, didn't Mr. Winscott say that he collapsed the tunnel?”
“That means there's more than one path leading to the surface, that's not so surprising, didn't Winscott mention before that they sealed a wall after going underground. Based on this, the monsters could have come up to the surface not through this location. Mr. Winscott simply assumed that these creatures had been living underground, maybe they just crawl out from some hole occasionally…Ah, I wish I could fill it with magma now.”
Speaking to this point, Duanmu Huai sighed. It was the same with the Ratmen and the Beast Race, the biggest problem underground was that the tunnels were interconnected, you couldn't be sure that when you enter, the enemy wouldn't run away somewhere else. Therefore, whenever Duanmu Huai encountered this, he'd just fill it with magma.
But it's not possible here, after all, it's under a town, if it got filled, the top would definitely get roasted.
“So, what do we do?”
“Don't worry, I've sent Ling'Nu to scout. She should be fine.”
Duanmu Huai wasn't going to plunge into the underworld so recklessly, hence he sent Ling'Nu first. After all, she's a black cat now, small in size, she can easily crawl through places humans can't.
“What should we do now?”
“Let's rest in the hotel tonight. If someone else pays for us to stay, we should not waste it, right?”
Cornwall isn't particularly well-known as a tourist spot, but it does have noteworthy hotels. Since Earl Best said that all meals and lodging would be covered on this trip, he naturally reserved three luxury rooms for them. After having dinner, they returned to their hotel rooms to rest——well, at least while here, they didn't have to worry about idiotic zombies who worship the Ancient Dominator causing them trouble.
“Phew……”
After organising her notes, Mary also sighed with relief. She then entered the bathroom intending to take a good bath to alleviate the fatigue. It must be said, even though she had thought about learning to write stories like Watson, once she started writing, Mary realised that it was more difficult than she had imagined. It was one thing not to use the real names of characters, but it was a completely different beast to write about the tasks.
Especially the final battle……how should she write it?
When Watson wrote about Sherlock Holmes, it was fundamentally a battle of wits, but…
“Hmm……”
Looking at the recordings of “Mr. Duanmu punched Glaki flying away, Mr. Duanmu ripped Glaki into two”……this kind of record gave Mary quite the headache, wondering how to artistically embellish it to appeal to the reader. Of course, since it is somewhat a work of factual literature, she couldn't arbitrarily alter the events.
After all, Duanmu Huai also said that the reason he agreed with Mary publishing the records was to show the world his and his team's power. If you made it a convoluted story like Hollywood movies filled with plot twists and ends with an epic comeback, this kind of person would definitely not earn the trust of clients.
For Mary, this was indeed a major hurdle.
Duanmu Huai was simply responsible for killing, but embellishing this process……Well, for Mary, it was indeed a headache-inducing matter.
“Haa……”
She sighed softly, Mary took off her clothes, then unconsciously looked towards her lower abdomen……
“Huh?”
Unexpectedly, the mark that should have been there was gone?
“What?”
Mary stretched out her hand, gently touching her lower belly. It felt no different from usual, except the mark that used to be there was nowhere to be seen.
How could this be??
Mary remembered very clearly; it was there before, even Lorena had validated it, proving that it wasn't a figment of her imagination. But now, the mark had mysteriously vanished?
But……if it's gone, that's good, at least this way, she doesn't need to propose this somewhat embarrassing problem to Mr. Duanmu.
With this thought, Mary exhaled a sigh of relief, then clicked on the showerhead, ready to enjoy a bath before going to bed.
Just as Mary was enjoying her leisurely rest, Mr. Duanmu received a response from Ling'Nu.
“I didn't expect you to make a map… this makes our job much easier.”
Beloved pet black cat lying by his side, Mr. Duanmu complemented her. Ling'Nu, beamed with pride and let out a few content purrs. As for the bunny on the other side… well, she was busy munching on her carrot, and didn't require any attention for the moment.
With one hand stroking the black cat, Mr. Duanmu looked at the paper in front of him. Ling'Nu handed him two pieces; one was a map of the underground cave, while the other depicted several monsters. It was clear that Ling'Nu not only plotted the map on her exploration but even managed to ascertain the situation of the monsters.
First were the pale-skinned, monkey-like creatures that Winscott had spoken about. According to Ling'Nu's report, the beasts didn't pose much of a threat, they simply enjoyed launching surprise attacks from narrow crevices.
The second kind were the ghouls Mr. Duanmu had encountered. Just like cockroaches, they were seemingly everywhere, truly irritating.
This clarified why the attacks by Winscott and his party had little to no effect on the ghouls; after all, their physical resistance was quite high.
The last type of creature, however, was the one that gave Mr. Duanmu a headache.
“The Nagas…?”
That's right, the drawing showed a creature similar to a lizard that could walk upright. When humans thought about snake people, they typically pictured Medusa, a creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a snake. But the Nagas in this world were different, they looked like snakes with arms and legs that could walk upright.
Naga's, like the Ancients, once flourished on this world before humans arrived, even establishing a glorious empire. However, unlike the Ancients, who were overthrown by their own slaves and forced to take refuge in the deep seas, the Nagas' demise was rather unfortunate.
First, the civilization that the Nagas initially established did not survive the dinosaur age. The Nagas escaped underground and only resurfaced after the dinosaurs were wiped out by the mini ice-age. Upon their return, the Nagas acted with an embraced air of, “I am back again. Whatever is eaten should be spat out, whatever is taken should be returned,” intending to revive their glorious civilization.
That's when they encountered… humans.
Disputes arose between the two races, as humans claimed ownership of the lands once belonging to the Nagas. Consequently, the Nagas were continuously beaten back by the expanding human race and eventually went extinct.
This speaks to the ferocity of prehistoric humans, considering that the Nagas at the time possessed highly advanced technology and magical skills, yet they were exterminated by humans.
After their second destruction, the remaining Nagas sought refuge underground and began yet another hibernation. Their plan was simple; akin to the dinosaur age, they would wait for some natural disaster to cause human extinction and then re-emerge to reclaim the world.
Well… this strategy of avoiding defeat by retreating, doesn't that seem similar to the tactics of certain mechanical skeletons?
Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that Nagas will pose no threat to humans.
However, for Mr. Duanmu, the more thorny issue is… he's facing off against a deity this time.
The Nagas worship their own deity, one of the Ancient Dominators, the Snake God Yig.
In comparison to the weak deity Glaki Mr. Duanmu had slain earlier, the Snake God Yig was a formidable opponent, a God who ruled the ancient times and protected all Nagas. This meant that when Mr. Duanmu descended underground, he would inevitably face off with the Snake God Yig.
Although the God Yig's fame is limited, its strength would certainly match that of Cthulhu. Simply put, it wouldn't be unmanageable for Mr. Duanmu.
At least it's easier to deal with than the King in Yellow, Yog Sothoth or Azathoth.
Now it seems that both the white-haired monkey and the ghouls are likely to be underlings of the Nagas. Given that there's an underground Naga colony, then there must be a Naga temple and Naga priests as well…
“This is a bit more troublesome than I expected.”
Mr. Duanmu raised his eyebrows and continued reading the map. The only saving grace was, given Ling'Nu's survey report, there was only one entrance and exit to the Nagas' lair, but there was an intense guard on it. If they were discovered by the Nagas while entering, they would call upon the Snake God Yig, which could turn the situation unfavourable; mainly due to the fact that Mr. Duanmu didn't want to battle underground. An accidental cave-in could affect the surface and that would certainly be troublesome.
But, it seems, there is no other option now.
Only one issue was left.
Mr. Duanmu vaguely recalled that there were two types of people in this world; one type are those that fear creatures with many legs and the other type those that fear creatures without legs.
With the impending battle against the Snake God, he realized he'd technically be faced with a horde of snakes. In fact, many gamers have expressed how battling the Snake God would induce nightmares of a lifetime with snake-infested surroundings. The intensity of the battle aside, the scene alone was ultimate horror, with snakes crawling up and down, left and right.
There were indeed many players who had caved in and given up the fight against the Snake God, not because of its power but because of the fear of snakes. An uncountable number of squirming, smooth bodies was essentially a nightmarish scene for many.
I'm just not sure… if Lorena and Mary… are afraid of snakes?
