Chapter 744: Chapter 541: Waiting for the Dog near the Tree_2 Chapter 744: Chapter 541: Waiting for the Dog near the Tree_2 Reminded by Donna's past warning about the potential beasts lurking in the mountain, Mary grew anxious right away. She hurriedly wiped her hair and changed into her clothes, then stepped out of the bathroom and went over to the window to investigate outside. All she saw was a dim forest, with only a few dim lamps below by the mansion illuminating the nearby ground. However, under the faint glow of these street lamps, everything in the vicinity appeared even darker.
Perhaps she heard wrong.
Thinking this, Mary shook her head and was about to leave when suddenly, she heard urgent knocking at the door.
“Thump, thump, thump.”
“Who is it?”
“It's, it's me, A'Xie……”
“A'Xie??”
Hearing her friend's voice, Mary froze for a moment. Nonetheless, she went to the bedroom door and opened it, only to see her friend, the cute and petite Asherica, standing with a ghostly expression and an unsettling gaze.
“What happened? What's wrong, A'Xie?”
“I………I don't know…”
Asherica seemed rather tense.
“I thought I saw something terrifying outside just now…just outside the window, like some sort of monster…”
“Monster??”
Upon hearing Asherica's words, Mary's heart skipped a beat. Perhaps to Asherica, this was just a hallucination, but for Mary…this was something she could not dismiss with a laugh.
“Where? Take me to see it.”
“Um………”
Asherica nodded and led Mary to her room —- her room was right next door to Mary's, also designed with a bedroom and a bathroom. On the surface, there didn't seem to be much difference between the two rooms. Looking somewhat disturbed, Asherica led Mary into her room and pointed to the window.
“Just now, after I finished taking a bath and was about to work on my homework, I suddenly heard a strange sound outside. I looked up and saw what looked like a terrifying monster jumping out of the window…Although I thought that I might have seen wrongly……”
“………”
Mary took a flashlight and approached the window, peering outside. Yet she could not see anything. Below the dark window, the only things reflecting were the pale faces of the two girls and a ray of lamp light.
“You must be mistaken.”
After carefully observing the outside, Mary turned back to Asherica and offered a smile.
“Don't worry, A'Xie, I think it may have been an illusion, maybe you saw the shadow of a lamp or something, and you mistook it as………”
“Roar———-!!”
However, Mary's words were cut short by a low roar from outside. The sound was indisputably not human; it was more like the roar of some horrifying monster. Both Mary and Asherica were startled, and Mary hurriedly turned back around to look outside once again —- still, she saw nothing.
Without hesitation, she reached out and opened the window, sticking her entire body out.
“Mar, Mary, be careful!”
Seeing her friend's daring action, Asherica gasped in surprise. Despite her fear, she ran over to Mary's side and stretched out a hand to grip her clothes.
“…………”
Yet, after careful observation, Mary still found nothing.
“There's, there's nothing?”
“Uhh… can't see anything…””
Mary shook her head, closing the window again. Meanwhile, Asherica was still unsettled, clutching Mary's nightdress and gazing at her.
“Mary, how about I sleep with you tonight.”
“Alright.”
Somewhat expecting Asherica's request, Mary agreed without hesitation. After all, Asherica was still young, and… the sound just now did seem a bit odd. Although still unsure about what happened, for safety's sake, Mary decided to let Asherica sleep with her.
The reason she did not tell Shirley was because Shirley was still resting, and it wouldn't be good to disturb her with such speculative information.
Shortly afterwards, Asherica packed her stuff and left the room with Mary. However, as Mary was about to leave the room, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed a shadow suddenly flashing across the wall. This made Mary pause, and instinctively, she turned to look back over her shoulder.
But still, all that could be seen was darkness outside. As Mary stared at the dark forest outside, she couldn't shake off an impending sense of doom. It was as if something was wickedly watching her from the darkness, ready to pounce out the next second, shattering the glass, and then…
“……Mary?”
Welcome back to reality by Asherica's voice.
“What's wrong?”
“Nothing, let's go.”
Reigning in her thoughts, Mary glanced once more at the dark forest outside before turning away. She left the room with Asherica.
“Damn, just missed it?”
Standing deep in the forest, looking down at the mansion not far away, Duanmu Huai clicked his tongue. He reached out to a tree trunk right next to him —- there was a gash on the immensely thick tree as if it were clawed by some bizarre creature. Unfortunately, it seemed Duanmu Huai was a step too late. The monster had apparently sensed his presence and escaped long ago.
