Chapter 729: Chapter 533: A Place Farther than the Universe_3 Chapter 729: Chapter 533: A Place Farther than the Universe_3 “Professor, since we are already in the South Pole, there are some things that I should clarify with you.”
Duanmu Huai approached Professor Palmer and began speaking calmly.
“What is it?”
“You may have noticed that our journey to the South Pole is not to observe penguins, nor strictly for geological archaeology. In fact, there are more important matters at hand. We chose to travel with the archaeological team merely for convenience. However, going forward, we might have to tend to our own tasks. So, if we go missing, please don't worry. Just focus on your work.”
“This……”
Upon hearing this, Professor Palmer furrowed his brows. The South Pole is a dangerous place and solitary activities are typically not permitted. As Duanmu Huai suggested, if they were to disappear without a word, it would be reasonable for Professor Palmer to assume they were missing and possibly initiate a search. What did Duanmu Huai exactly mean?
“Do you understand why I chose to sponsor you?”
“This…I genuinely don't.”
Professor Palmer also harbored this question. While he is a professor of Geological Archaeology at the Royal Academy, he is not the most proficient there. There are many who are significantly more accomplished and famous than him, as well as those who are more compliant despite being less capable. Hence, Palmer was curious as to why Duanmu Huai chose him.
“I've read your article 'Proposals for Staged Excavation in Geological Archaeology'….you believe that even when we come across really important relics, we should not excavate straight away. Instead, we should begin from the surrounding area, master the basics, and then progress gradually. Am I right?”
“Yes.”
Professor Palmer nodded, looking puzzled at Duanmu Huai. Indeed, those were his principles and ideas outlined in his paper. But why did they catch Duanmu's attention?
“Now, Professor Palmer, let me ask you, what if there was an archaeological relic before you, one that could overturn the world and the entire human history? Suppose that excavating these relics could provide you with invaluable knowledge and experience beyond what any normal person could ever attain, even a place in the annals of history. Would you still stick to your principles? Or would you try to seize it as quickly as possible?”
“This……I don't know.”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's question, Professor Palmer thought for a moment, before shaking his head with a rueful smile.
“After all, despite my achievements throughout my lifetime, I haven't come across a disruption to human history like the one you described, Mr. Duanmu. I can't guarantee that I will remain clear-headed in the face of such temptation. However, I believe that we should proceed with caution in archaeological excavations……..”
“Good.”
Duanmu Huai nodded. As Professor Palmer said, the problems faced by mankind in this world are not as severe as they seem. However, many times, they end up on the brink of destruction due to their desire for shortcuts.
Humans suddenly wanting to evolve into High Organisms.
Humans suddenly wanting to acquire the wisdom of the entire universe and unify the world.
Or after discovering an ancient relic and detecting that it could overturn the human perception of history, impulsively deciding to excavate it.
This is akin to the horror film scenario where adventurers discover a sealed area, recklessly break the seal and release the monster within.
Despite the bloodstains and wreckage warning of danger, they still insist on opening the door…who's to blame?
Of course, it's their own fault.
Most of the stories regarding the Evil God and relics in this world follow a similar pattern.
Archaeologists discover relics of the Ancient Dominator. “Wow, such advanced intelligent beings existed in Ancient Times! We want to follow their path!” And then they impulsively learn from them.
Not even considering, if they were indeed successful, would humans be in charge?
Why did they ultimately disappear?
Of course, they must have gone awry!
In fact, most players in the game are mature. The reason is simple, upon encountering the relics of various civilizations in the game, the players' first reaction is to ponder how that civilization brought about their own demise.
This is similar to a police officer, upon discovering a victim's body, immediately contemplating whether the cause of death was due to homicide, poison or suicide.
With these thoughts, Duanmu Huai brought his focus back to Professor Palmer.
“In any case, I have high expectations for you. Keep up the good work and if luck permits, I'll share some intriguing knowledge with you once I return.”
“Mr. Duanmu, what exactly…”
Professor Palmer isn't a fool. He detected some hidden meaning in Duanmu Huai's words and stared at him incredulously.
However, before Professor Palmer could finish his sentence, Captain Lark emerged from the cabin, interrupting their conversation.
“Hey, you two should take a look at this!”
