Chapter 691: Chapter 512 Foolish Mortals_1 Chapter 691: Chapter 512 Foolish Mortals_1 When Duanmu Huai returned to the viewing deck, the rest of the party looked up anxiously at his arrival.
“So, detective, have you found the murderer?”
The male student who had previously greeted Duanmu Huai was quick to voice his question, and in response to his inquiry, those who had followed Duanmu Huai wore complicated expressions on their faces. At first, they thought they could identify the murderer by finding sufficient evidence or clues. But now, it seemed, the more clues they found, the less certain they were about who the criminal was.
“Alright, now it's time I have a say.”
Duanmu Huai tapped on the table, drawing everyone's attention before narrowing his gaze to focus on each individual.
The only confirmed characteristic of the criminal so far was that they were a smoker. Apart from this, there was no definitive evidence. However, Duanmu Huai was not a detective who used logic to persuade people like Conan or Sherlock Holmes.
He was more adept at persuading others with reason instead.
“After searching, I've come across some interesting clues…”
As he spoke, Duanmu Huai placed the torn photograph he'd previously retrieved from Arthur's room on the table, shifting his gaze to Arthur.
“So, Mr. Arthur, do you have anything to explain about this picture? Not only does it have Dr. Rose in it, but also the deceased Mr. Williams and Miss Esther. Yet, this photo was found in your room, torn up. Do you have any explanations for this?”
“I have nothing to say.”
In response to Duanmu Huai's inquiry, Arthur maintained his arrogant demeanor, though it somewhat diminished in Duanmu Huai's presence.
“This is a photo passed down in my family. Regarding Dr. Rose, I heard about her from my family as well. Indeed, I did ask Dr. Rose to provide me with some medications, but if you want to accuse me of murder because of this, then that's another matter.”
“Eh? Am I also in this photo?”
At this moment, the maid Esther walked over in surprise and carefully examined the photo.
“Ah, that might be my mother. I do remember her saying she used to be a maid…”
“Alright then.”
Duanmu Huai temporarily put the photograph to one side, then turned his gaze to Fred.
“Mr. Fred, you likely understand what we want to ask you. In your room, we found many symbols similar to the one at the crime scene. Do you have an explanation for that?”
“Of course, I drew those.”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's question, Fred seemed unsurprised and quickly responded.
“I also know a bit about mysticism. Naturally, I could tell that the ominous symbol would bring about some terrible nightmare. So, to protect myself, I drew some protective symbols in my room to ensure my safety.”
Well, his reasoning was indeed very reasonable.
Duanmu Huai gave the man a quick glance and shifted his focus back to the last suspect.
“Mr. Bart.”
He beckoned the navigator, Bart, over and then pulled a pocket watch out of his pocket and placed it on the table.
“I'd be grateful if you could explain to me why the victim's pocket watch was in your box.”
“You……..!”
Upon seeing the pocket watch, Bard's face reddened. He glared at Duanmu Huai.
“I-I have no idea what you're talking about…”
“Your excuses won't work, Mr. Bart. Everybody here saw me take the watch from your box, so… you'd better be able to give me an explanation, like they did.”
Duanmu Huai smirked, but his gaze remained on the navigator who, under his intense scrutiny, clenched his teeth, before finally lowering his head.
“Alright, alright. I'll tell you…I'll tell you! Damn it, I admit, I am a thief. Whenever the guests leave their cabins, I go into their rooms and steal some small items. Those who ride our airship are all wealthy, they wouldn't care about the loss of trinkets! This time was the same. I saw Mr. Williams leave his room for the smoking lounge, and he didn't lock his door, so I took the opportunity to go in. I saw this expensive pocket watch on the bedside table and stole it, then fled hastily. Afterward, I heard someone shouting for help and only found out that Mr. Williams was murdered! Yes, I did steal his watch, but I absolutely did not murder him!”
“Wait.”
Hearing this, Duanmu Huai furrowed his brow.
“You saw Mr. Williams go to the smoking room?”
“Yes.”
“So, was he alone? How was his mental state?”
“Ah………”
Upon Duanmu Huai's questioning, the navigator, Bart, paused to recollect.
“I'm not sure. He was alone, but I don't know about his mental state, as I only saw his back.”
“Alright.”
After hearing Bart's explanation, Duanmu Huai nodded.
“The facts are very clear, the murderer is…”
“The murderer is?”
Hearing this, everyone in the room focused their attention on Duanmu Huai. Under their gaze, Duanmu Huai… raised his hands with an ambiguous gesture.
