Chapter 684: Chapter 508 The Journey Has Just Begun_1 Chapter 684: Chapter 508 The Journey Has Just Begun_1 After that, everyone managed to reach the final destination without any trouble.
Of course, that wasn't the end. The bizarre deaths of two passengers on the train had to be reported. After all, one of them was a well-known journalist and the other, a corporate tycoon. They were far from being ordinary people. Although Duanmu Huai didn't find much in the way of clues this time, luckily enough, the records of the transfers between Phillip and Silver Dusk Cottage left by the journalist were easy to trace. After Duanmu Huai relayed this to Anthony via telephone, the latter agreed to assign people to carry out an investigation as soon as he heard about the Silver Dusk Cottage.
After all, that organization had a notoriously bad reputation. Despite being a big entrepreneur, as soon as Phillip got involved with such a group, his fate was sealed to one path: death. Oh, and he's already dead.
Anthony didn't forget to tease Duanmu Huai. Getting bored in Arkham City, it was unexpected to come across a big case as soon as he stepped out the door. Did he want to delve deeper into it? Phillip was a renowned businessman, and Silver Dusk Cottage was the kind of organization that specialized in attracting high-ranking figures. Through Phillip, there might be a chance to dig up more information about Silver Dusk Cottage.
While Duanmu Huai was indeed tempted, after some thinking, he ended up rejecting the proposition. The reason was simple, he had set all his plans in motion, spent the money and everything. Was he supposed to simply waste those? Besides, the implication behind Anthony's statement suggested that he wanted Duanmu Huai to infiltrate Silver Dusk Cottage… Seriously? With a physique like his, going undercover? He must have mistaken him for someone else.
In the end, Duanmu Huai turned down Anthony's invitation and boarded the Full Moon Starlit Ship, headed for Fog City.
Must say, as a rich man's toy, the Full Moon Starlit was truly a luxurious aircraft–there were only ten cabins in the whole airship, specifically prepared to host distinguished guests.
Beyond that, there was also a restaurant, a gaming room, and even a spa … Just imagine chilling in a warm pool at an altitude of ten thousand meters, with the blue sky and white clouds in sight. That would indeed be a unique experience.
The presence of Duanmu Huai and Lorena, of course, attracted the attention of other guests. Fortunately, they were all well mannered. Even if they were curious, they would just covertly watch from a distance without plans of coming over. Duanmu Huai didn't mind others' glances. He merely stared at the scenery outside the window while casually sipping his tea. The airship was slower than a plane but still faster than a ship. In no more than five days, it would arrive at Fog City.
Hopefully, he won't run into any more issues.
“Good day, sir.”
While Duanmu Huai was admiring the view, a voice came from beside him. Turning to look, a young man dressed like a gentleman was standing by his side, looking at him with a smile.
“Are you also on your way to Fog City?”
“Isn't that obvious? Does this airship look like it can toss me off somewhere else mid-flight?”
“Hahaha…”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's reply, the young man gave an awkward chuckle. He then glanced back–following his gaze, Duanmu saw a group of young folks of about the same age seated at a nearby gaming table. They were looking over in his direction with expressions full of curiosity and anxiety.
Could this be that they were playing some sort of Truth or Dare and he was chosen to approach him?
“So, what's up?”
“Nothing really, just…”
The young man's face stiffened a bit, being close to Duanmu Huai was clearly making him nervous. It was normal, anyone coming face-to-face with a tiger without a cage for protection would have their legs go weak.
He pulled out a handkerchief and wiped the cold sweat off his forehead, straining to think of what to say next.
“Just… You seem to be visiting Fog City for the first time?”
“Yes, but from your appearance, it doesn't seem like it's your first time.”
Duanmu Huai looked at the young man's attire. Including him, all of his peers were dressed in traditional noble clothing, something seldom seen outside. Only in a conservative place like Fog City would people dress that way. Modern people tend to wear suits while going out.
“Of course, we are students from the Royal Institute, returning for our studies.”
“Oh… I see.”
“May I ask, are you…”
“I am a detective.”
“A detective?”
On hearing Duanmu Huai's self-introduction, the young man's eyes immediately lit up.
“I didn't expect to meet a genuine detective here. Are you also here for the Iron Chain Jack case?”
“Iron Chain Jack?”
Hearing this, Duanmu Huai furrowed his brow.
“Isn't it Jack the Ripper?”
“But from the rumors we've heard, it seems that Iron Chain Jack is the moniker used in all the streets and alleys. This has become a very well-known rumor in Fog City. Even our parents have repeatedly warned us to be careful about our safety when we return to school……”
“Oh?”
At this point, Duanmu Huai showed some interest in them. Clearly, these students were locals, so they should know more about that rumor.
“So, why don't you tell me, what exactly is this rumor?”
“That… we actually don't know much about it either.”
Next, the young man shared what he knew about the Iron Chain Jack rumor currently lurking in Fog City with Duanmu Huai. The basics were largely the same, but according to the young man, the bodies were not found on the street, but in the river. Besides that…
“Why call him Iron Chain Jack? Surely, Jack the Ripper is a more traditional name.”
If Duanmu Huai found anything suspicious, it was the nickname of the murderer. In the beginning, the files he got from Fog City mentioned Jack the Ripper. He wasn't surprised by this, considering that Jack the Ripper was a famous rumor in Fog City, fitting for similar cases due to its notoriety.
But Iron Chain Jack was different, especially the “iron chain” part, which implied that the rumor could be true, indicating the potential existence of an eyewitness who saw the murderer, otherwise, how would people know about the iron chain?
Unfortunately, these students spent the entire holiday out of town. They had just returned to the country to start school, and all the rumors were communicated through phone calls with local relatives and friends. These second-hand rumors naturally didn't provide much to investigate.
Duanmu Huai and the young man had a lengthy chat. The latter's tension from initially meeting Duanmu Huai gradually relaxed.
“I really appreciate it.”
“No problem, when we get to Fog City, I might need your help.”
“Of course, I'll do my best to help if I can.”
As he spoke, the young man pulled out a business card from his pocket and handed it over. Duanmu Huai accepted it and reciprocated with his own card.
“Here's mine. If you run into any issues, you can contact me.”
Soon their conversation ended, and Duanmu Huai returned to his room to rest, while the young man went back to his friends and began to chat enthusiastically.
The rest of the journey was plain sailing. The weather was calm for two whole days with no storms or disruptions. Ideally, Duanmu Huai would have liked to have reached his destination this smoothly.
Unfortunately… things did not go as planned.
On the morning of the third day, Duanmu Huai had just gotten up when a scream came from outside.
“Murder!————!!”
“………”
Hearing this, Duanmu Huai paused for a moment, then silently sighed.
Could it be that Arkham's feng shui is really not good?
