Chapter 672: Chapter 498: Follow the Vine to Find the Melon_1 Chapter 672: Chapter 498: Follow the Vine to Find the Melon_1 In fact, Duanmu Huai had been following Anthony discreetly from the moment he departed, making full use of the skills of a Shadow Crow Guard. Of course, Anthony had no chance of detecting Duanmu Huai.
Simply put, Duanmu Huai was using Anthony as bait.
Duanmu Huai wasn't bothered by this, after all, players had often said that one of the three Divine Artifacts in this world was friendship.
If friends aren't for exploiting, then what are they for?
But now that this guy had made his presence known, Duanmu Huai wouldn't hold back!
The monster, upon being hit by Duanmu Huai's attack, let out a sharp scream and stood up, sniffing at Duanmu Huai's direction. But it wasn't shocked to its SAN value… The reason was simple. This creature didn't have eyes! Naturally, it was impossible for it to see Duanmu Huai!
“What the hell is this thing?”
At that moment, using the light of a flashlight, Anthony could clearly see the appearance of the monster, causing him to scream out loud. In the glow of the flashlight, they could clearly see in front of them stood a humanoid creature as tall as a person. Its body and limbs were similar to those of humans, except its head was extraordinarily strange. It only had a mouth on its head, lacking anything else above the nose, and the top of the head was completely bare, looking eerie. Especially when it opened its mouth to reveal its tongue and teeth, it looked even more strange.
The fingers of this monster were very thin and long, like dried tree branches, which looked nauseating.
Not only that, after a slight sway of its body, the monster surprisingly became transparent again, vanishing into the darkness, its rapid footsteps echoing back and forth around them.
“What do we do now?”
If Anthony had been alone, he may have already been on the verge of collapse. Fortunately, Duanmu Huai was by his side, so Anthony hurriedly stuck close to Duanmu Huai, vigilantly scanning the surroundings while asking for advice.
“Don't worry, they are just a bunch of beasts, we'll just kill them all.”
In response to Anthony's inquiry, Duanmu Huai appeared quite calm. If someone else had said this, Anthony might not have been reassured, but thinking back to the scene where Duanmu Huai had smashed the creature away… Yes, Anthony thought this big guy's words were pretty reliable.
“Thud! Thud! Thud!!”
Meanwhile, the monster hiding in the darkness quickened its pace and charged towards the two of them. It roared angrily, suddenly emerged from Duanmu Huai's side, screeched, and extended its sharp claws towards Duanmu Huai's chest!
“Die!!!”
However, Duanmu Huai roared in response to the monster's attack, raised his right fist dramatically, and drove it directly onto the monster's head, sending it crashing to the ground. A soft splatter was heard, then Anthony saw the monster's head shatter like an apple under Duanmu Huai's punch, splintering into fragments on the ground.
The monster let out a mournful howl, its body twitched, and then it lay motionless.
“…………”
Seeing this, Anthony was stunned. Although he had anticipated that Duanmu Huai, with his mighty strength, would not take long to defeat this monster, what he did not expect was the brute force with which this man smashed apart the creature's head with a single punch!
But before Anthony could breathe a sigh of relief, suddenly, deep roars echoed again from all directions!
“What…what's going on?”
Hearing these overlapping roars, Anthony grew anxious again.
“It's obvious, there's more than one of these monsters. Maybe it's because I killed one of them that the others are angry…” Duanmu Huai suggested.
“What should we do now?”
At this point, Anthony understood. Clearly, these monsters were like a pack of wolves. If one wolf dies, the rest will not just let it go!
“It's simple.”
Saying so, Duanmu Huai tightly grasped the staff in his hand and swung it forcefully!
“Just kill them all!!!”
“Roar———–!!”
Just as Duanmu Huai uttered these words, it seemed as though the monsters understood his intent. The initially low growls suddenly transformed into shrill sounds, and the next moment, rapid steps sounded from every direction, rushing towards Duanmu Huai and Anthony!
What happened next, Anthony didn't know how to describe. He could feel those terrifying creatures circling them. He could even smell their horrible breath – a nauseating, bloody stench. But he had no idea what those creatures looked like. All he could see was Duanmu Huai clenching his fist and wielding the staff fiercely.
However, he didn't seem to be swinging his fists and staff aimlessly, for each time Duanmu Huai swung his staff, Anthony could hear a “thud” sound as if an animal was struck hard. The originally harsh screams then turned into mournful howls. Duanmu Huai was like a relentless, whirling storm, and Anthony stood right in the eye of the storm. Looking out, he could see nothing but fragments torn apart by the storm and howling winds.
“Bam!!”
Duanmu Huai's staff swung down hard again, hitting the monster's head. His club-like staff was like a hammer, splitting the monster's head like a walnut, then it whined, collapsed on the ground, and went quiet.
“Hmph! Waste!”
Duanmu Huai stepped on the monster's corpse and looked around. Following the death of the last monster, the exhibition hall once again fell silent. Perhaps because all the monsters had been killed, the seemingly enclosed space returned to its original state, and the lights that were originally turned off were reignited.
“Is…is it over?”
Feeling the sudden brightness, Anthony opened his eyes and looked around. But at the sight of the surroundings, he couldn't help but gasp.
Nearby, on the ground around them, lay the bodies of terrifying creatures everywhere. Some of them had their heads smashed, some were torn into fragments… there were dozens of them in total.
Was this the work of one man?
Anthony looked incredulously at the monstrous bodies on the ground, and then at Duanmu Huai beside him. Although he wanted to help during the attack, it was so dark all around and the monsters were semi-transparent, making it difficult for Anthony to find an opportunity to shoot. Essentially, it was Duanmu Huai who killed them all.
Who would have thought, he could actually fight like this.
Even though he had expected it, seeing the bodies in front of him, Anthony was incredulous. Even a mob of dozens of people likely couldn't have vanquished them so easily, let alone these semi-transparent monsters.
“Are you hurt?”
“I'm fine.”
Duanmu Huai waved his hand.
“What about these bodies?”
“I'll handle it.”
Hearing Duanmu Huai's query, Anthony hurriedly grabbed his phone to make a call. Typically, the bodies left behind in such events would be completely destroyed. These monsters were no exception, only that… encountering so many at once was probably a first.
No, it should be the second time, considering that in the previous Innsmouth file report, a few hundred half-human, half-fish monster bodies were discovered.
Hmm…
At the thought of this, Anthony weirdly looked at Duanmu Huai.
Could it be that he killed all those creatures?
If it had been another investigator, Anthony wouldn't have such thoughts. But now, witnessing how Duanmu Huai easily killed these transparent monsters hiding in space, his thoughts took a sudden turn.
No matter how formidable those half-human, half-fish monsters were, they couldn't have been more formidable than these, could they?
“What's the matter?”
“Oh, nothing.”
Seeing Duanmu Huai looking at him, Anthony awkwardly coughed and quickly changed the subject.
“I've contacted the logistics team. They'll be here soon… So, is this matter resolved?”
“Of course not.”
“Not???”
Hearing Duanmu Huai's response, Anthony was instantly dumbfounded. He looked around at a loss for words.
How many more of these creatures do we have to kill?
However, Duanmu Huai's next words soon resolved his confusion.
“A museum can't hide dozens of monsters. It's clear that they were transported here through a portal. We need to find that portal.”
“That makes sense.”
At this point, Anthony came back to his senses. Indeed, as Duanmu Huai said, it was impossible for a museum to hide so many monsters. The creatures must have come from somewhere else. If they couldn't figure out where they originated from, it wouldn't matter how many they killed here.
So, the two began their search again.
Fortunately, probably due to the complete eradication of the monsters, they soon found a ruined oil painting in the corner of the exhibition hall–depicting a monstrosity with no eyes and an enormous gaping mouth.
Clearly, that was the monster.
And underneath the painting was a description of its origin.
“Void Ghost” – Donated by Kristin Sellers from the Art Department of Miskatonic University.
“Clearly, we've found our clue.”
Duanmu Huai said quietly, looking at the title below the painting.
