Chapter 666: Chapter 494: Invitation_1 Chapter 666: Chapter 494: Invitation_1 After making his decision, Anthony immediately ordered his subordinates to hit the road towards Newburyport.
On the way, Anthony also managed to look over the file for the investigator.
Unexpectedly to Anthony, this wasn't the investigator's first U-class event!
According to the files, he was originally a citizen of Arkham, with a bit of local fame, a university graduate, no criminal records. Not too long ago, he went to attend a private art exhibition held by a distant relative, during which he encountered a U-class event and successfully resolved it.
It was this event that led the police to include him in the investigator's file.
However, at the end of the file, what caught Anthony's attention was…
Reported in the dossier, the investigator has extraordinary combat skills, not only killed a ghoul and a cultist who manipulates them but even successfully rescued the victim………
He killed the monster in a U-class case?!
Admittedly, seeing this made Anthony's eyes nearly pop out.
Anthony couldn't say for sure about other monsters, but he had seen ghouls. Over the past decade, Anthony has been involved in several U-class cases, and was 'fortunate' enough to have met with this creature. He remembered clearly that these ghouls, in addition to their terrifying appearance, were extremely resilient. Their skin was like a car tire, which showed no reaction when shot by the average police pistol. Moreover, these ghouls were not slow and had impressive strength……
How did the investigator kill them?
And according to the record, it wasn't just one, but a group of them!
Moreover, according to the file's final statement, the investigator had slain the monsters and cultists and rescued the victims before calling the police. Meaning, when the police arrived, they were merely there to clean up!
Well, that's something.
This revelation left Anthony utterly dumbfounded.
He'd been in this line for ten years, seen plenty of records, and in his memory, investigators mostly chose to flee and report to the authorities in cases like these. Even those cornered like a trapped dog only made their escape after a desperate struggle.
Of course, from the perspective of those involved, Anthony could very well understand these investigators' feelings. For one to escape such a creature could be considered lucky, let alone repelling it successfully, which was even luckier.
However, this increased the difficulty for the police, as these cultists were as elusive as rats, always scurrying away at the first sign of trouble. In the past ten years, Anthony has encountered hundreds of such cases, but those that ended in arrests were… …barely a handful.
Yes, they could be counted on one hand.
By the time the police arrived, the culprits had already made their escape.
It was only natural, after all, an investigator isn't a soldier, there was no need to charge into danger as soon as commanded. If they stumbled upon such events, they wouldn't choose to confront the threat head-on. After all, a life could only be lived once, how could it stand a chance against such monstrosities?
Hence, a case where the criminal and their illicit goods being caught red-handed was… …quite a rare sight indeed.
After reading the file, Anthony's curiosity towards Duanmu Huai grew deeper. He wanted to see just what this investigator was capable of. As for why Duanmu Huai would go to Innsmouth, he felt it understandable; the man had just gone through a harrowing incident, believing a trip to the seaside might ease his mood wasn't far-fetched.
But he ended up in another incident at the seaside… Well, you had to say, this investigator sure was unlucky.
Lost in his thoughts, Anthony arrived at the Newburyport Police Station. He introduced himself, stating his wish to speak with the investigator. Consequently, he was led to… …
“What's going on?”
Upon seeing the warehouse before him, Anthony was left rooted on the spot.
From his experience, investigators, even when detained for questioning, were generally only held in custody, or perhaps kept in solitary confinement at worst.
But what the hell was this about keeping them in a warehouse?
“Haha, our… doesn't have enough space.”
Upon hearing Anthony's comment, the local police officer laughed and answered. Seeing his response, Anthony gave him a speechless glance.
Did Newburyport have it rough? Were their prisons so full they had to stuff people into warehouses?
They really did this?
“Open the door.”
Anthony couldn't be bothered to say more, he simply gestured for the officer to open the door. The officer hurriedly did so, and Anthony walked in.
Normally, it wouldn't be allowed to hold people in the police station's warehouse, given the many items stored inside. However, fortunately, this was an old warehouse with not much inside, save for the lighting being a bit dim. Anthony walked in to find the warehouse entirely desolate, aside from several empty shelves located along the walls.
“Mr. Duanmu Huai?”
Anthony coughed once, then called out.
“I'm Chief Anthony Pope from the Federal Police Department, in charge of investigating the Innsmouth case. Could I ask you to have a talk with me?”
As he spoke, Anthony walked into the warehouse, cautiously looking around. With his extensive experience in dealing with such situations, Anthony knew that investigators, who had just escaped death, would undoubtedly be in poor mental state. Having constant nightmares and staying put in a corner were quite usual, and some might even ramble nonsensically, or abuse alcohol and drugs……
