Chapter 656: Chapter 486 Serious People Don't Write Diaries!_2 Chapter 656: Chapter 486 Serious People Don't Write Diaries!_2 At this point, matters would seem to have settled down. As an art dealer, the distant relative naturally couldn't waste all his time on Cliff. Thus, he assigned someone to assist Cliff while he himself returned home to start preparations for the art exhibition.
However, events didn't simply come to an end there; they began to take on a more unsettling turn instead.
The first twist occurred when the assistant assigned to help Cliff, barely lasted a day before fleeing back in terror, claiming he would “never go back to the blasphemous dwelling of that heretical cultist.” The distant relative didn't think much of this, after all, he was well aware that not just anyone could withstand the “force” emulated by Cliff's artwork.
And so, the distant relative sent another younger employee who seemed to have a good rapport with Cliff.
This one went missing completely.
So, when Cliff called to inform him that the paintings were all finished, the distant relative had no choice but to pay a personal visit to see exactly what Cliff had created.
“I simply cannot put what I saw into words. That shocking, blasphemous terror still sends shivers down my spine whenever I think back to it. I can't understand how a human could create something so abhorrent, a madness, and deformity that seemed to emanate a spiritual stench. For the first time, I began to doubt if my choice was right. Perhaps his colleagues were correct, Cliff Pitt was indeed a madman, a demon, an emissary of hell. With each painting, he brought a spiritual curse and distortion to humanity that can hardly be put into words… Perhaps, I should rethink my decision…”
This visit clearly shook the distant relative to his core, to the point that his handwriting became shaky. Ultimately, the distant relative did change his original plans. He decided to first hold a small appraisal meeting at his home, somewhat like an exclusive preview before the official premiere of a film. He invited his relatives and friends to view the works of Cliff Pitt, then only decide whether or not he was going to host the exhibition.
The diary ended there.
And now, Duanmu Huai knew why he had been invited to the banquet.
But… what kind of artwork could have terrified the distant relative to this extent?
Admittedly, Duanmu Huai was somewhat curious.
“Sir Knight, have you found something?”
By now, Lorena and the maid had also finished searching and returned to Duanmu Huai's side, curiously asking for any updates..
“Truly intriguing.”
Facing the two ladies, Duanmu Huai chuckled and recited the contents of the diary to them. Hearing Duanmu Huai's account, Lorena frowned.
“So, this Cliff Pitt man is the cause of all this trouble?”
“By the looks of it, it's pretty certain. But I do want to see what art he has created that scared someone to such an extent… Oh, have you found anything?”
Faced with Duanmu Huai's question, the maid shook her head, whereas Lorena began to speak.
“I found some strange books in the bookcase…”
According to Lorena, although most of the books in the bookshelves were about art, the bookshelf at the top was filled with books regarding mythologies, demons, and the like…
It seemed that after hearing from the man, the distant relative too had investigated some things.
“Let's go then, let's see what this guy named Cliff has drawn.”
Duanmu Huai closed the diary and handed it to the maid.
“Based on what the diary says, the distant relative converted the entertainment room next door into a temporary exhibition hall.”
Exiting the study, Duanmu Huai looked at the large door on the other side of the corridor. That was the entertainment room which, according to the diary, the distant relative had transformed into a small exhibition hall. So, they should be able to see the artwork that had terrified the art dealer relative upon reaching the entertainment room.
However, just as Duanmu Huai walked out of the study, the corridor's lighting suddenly dimmed considerably. Simultaneously, the shadows cast on the furniture by the light seemed to come alive; continuously writhing and coalescing into dark, gloomy tendrils reaching out to Duanmu Huai and the others. At that moment, the whole corridor began distorting, and the undulating wooden floor coupled with the low bouncing sounds made one involuntarily imagine being inside a giant living beast's guts rather than an inanimate space.
“Humph!”
Caught off guard by the sudden occurrence, Lorena halted abruptly while the maid assumed a defensive position. Duanmu Huai, however, only glanced at it coldly and snorted.
“Begone!!!”
Accompanying Duanmu Huai's roar, the dark tendrils that were pouncing onto them appeared to be hit by a violent wave, retreating faster than they had attacked, leaving without a trace in just a blink of an eye. The twisted, eerie corridor also reverted back to normal as Duanmu Huai barked an order.
