Chapter 1158: Chapter 793: Escalated? Chapter 1158: Chapter 793: Escalated? “That's all nonsense, watch me…!”
However, before the security captain could finish speaking, D had already appeared in front of him like a ghost. With a swift motion, she reached out with her right hand, grabbed the captain's head, and forcefully smashed it against the wall. Accompanied by a “pthuck” sound, the captain's head burst open like a smashed watermelon, while his headless corpse twitched once before sliding to the ground.
“Death, Shinigami!!”
This scene became the final straw for the Arasaka Soldiers, and they completely abandoned the fight, screaming as they turned to flee.
For D, this marked the beginning of a slaughter.
“Done, come on in, I have something interesting for you to see.”
After an unknown amount of time, Lucy, who had been covering her ears and crouching in a corner, finally received a transmission from D. She stood up carefully and walked through the shattered doorway–the sight that met her eyes was a corridor almost entirely stained with blood and dismembered limbs. Following D's directions, Lucy walked through the hallway and then arrived at an inner room. There, she saw D standing in front of a control panel.
On the other side of the glass wall of the control panel, someone was floating in a hibernation pod filled with nutrient fluid.
It was no other than the Cybernetic Madman who had attacked them earlier.
“What on earth is this…?”
“Why don't you just read it and find out?”
“I…”
Hearing D speak, Lucy was taken aback for a moment, then she looked at the port marked with the Arasaka logo.
“No, I… I don't dare… Arasaka's encryption system is terrifying, once discovered…”
“The researchers here?”
“Killed.”
D responded flatly to Lucy's inquiry, then turned to look at her.
“Are you sure you won't do it?”
Lucy didn't reply, just silently nodded her head.
“Alright then, I'll do it myself.”
As she said this, D opened an old-fashioned terminal on her wrist and took out a data cable to plug into the console.
“Are you sure this will work? An external terminal's processing power is no match for Arasaka's…”
“Let's just try and see.”
As she spoke, Lucy saw D casually press a few keys on the keyboard.
The scene that unfolded next was unbelievable to her.
Suddenly, the locked information on the screen made a “beep” sound and then unlocked, quickly revealing numerous invaluable pieces of data.
“How is this possible?!”
Seeing this, Lucy was stunned. She knew that even she would have trouble hacking into Arasaka's ICE, and it might even fail. After all, she was well aware of how terrifying Arasaka's data encryption was, being a hacker herself. However, the system, which seemed almost unbreakable, was easily hacked by D within moments?
Was Arasaka's ICE made of paper? So easily pierced?
Before Lucy could recover from her shock at Arasaka's encryption being so easily bypassed, the data on the screen left her utterly dumbfounded.
“How, how is this possible…!?”
“Heh, looks like we really did find something useful.”
D squinted at the data and plans before her. The reason was simple–it was a deranged plan. According to it, it seemed Arasaka had been researching how to artificially induce cyber psychosis and taking complete control over it, turning victims into puppets!
“The research shows that cyber psychosis is a self-defense instinctual response of human physiology against the invasion of foreign implantation. An excess of cybernetic augmentation can cause a cognitive distortion in human's recognition of their own bodies, leading to gradual collapse. Since the augmentations don't have a self-awareness system, once the augmentations erode the mind to a certain phase, the victim's rationality collapses, acting only on biological instincts. If the cybernetics can be adjusted to guide and brainwash the user's mindset during the implantation process, in theory, it's possible to make them obey commands sent via signal. From this point, test subject number 27………..]
“They really dare to do such a thing?”
The records before her had Lucy agape with disbelief, unable to trust her own eyes.
What exactly did Arasaka Corporation intend to do?
“What's there not to dare? In the end, it's all about wanting to rule the world… Ah, the same old tiresome ambition, truly boring…”
As she spoke, D took out a chip and inserted it into the console to begin downloading data–honestly, she had seen far too many players with this kind of boring and cliche ambition that she had become numb to it. She really felt like ridiculing these bosses for not having anything better to do.
To be honest, to the players of this technological era, the concept of a boss wanting to rule the world seemed rather outdated.
You could say, in ancient times or during the Era of Myth and Magic, when civilization levels were low, dominating the world might have been a lofty aspiration.
But in the technological era, what's the point of such pursuit? To think of dominating a single planet without even leaving their own galaxy? How low can you go? With all the effort, wouldn't it be more interesting to improve technology, develop space colonization, and so on, rather than fighting for power on the home planet?
In the eyes of the players, a modern society boss still aspiring to world domination was essentially as ludicrous as peasants fantasizing about an emperor's golden rod.
