Chapter 1137: Chapter 780: Reversal and Backflow Chapter 1137: Chapter 780: Reversal and Backflow “AAAAAAA…………”
It was as if a chanting voice echoed through the heavens, and at the same time, the ground began to tremble again. Upon hearing this sound, everyone was taken aback.
“What's happening? What's going on?”
“Why am I not surprised at all?”
In contrast to the astonishment of the others, Duanmu Huai seemed very calm, having been through similar situations too many times as a player.
“Medea, can you find out where the trouble is coming from?”
“Of course, MASTER… it's Ryudou Temple!”
“So, the Holy Grail is going to be revived?”
“MASTER, look!”
Just then, Alice Phil pointed in shock towards the direction of Ryudou Temple, and everyone looked up to see–everyone was stunned.
Before their eyes, the top of the mountain where Ryudou Temple was located exploded, with surging black muck erupting like spewing lava and shooting straight into the sky. The earth quaked violently as the onlookers stood dumbstruck, watching the dark muck with its deep purple glow burst forth and slowly cascade down the slope.
“What on earth is happening!?”
At this point, Rin Tohsaka was completely bewildered, and nobody else was faring much better, even Medea and Alice Phil. They had never imagined encountering such an event, leaving them at a loss for words.
Duanmu Huai, however, was the calmest among them. It was just like fighting a BOSS; whatever the trouble, just fight.
“Medea, Alice Phil, is there any way to stop the flow of that black muck? If this continues, the entire Fuyuki City is going to be completely submerged!”
Hearing Duanmu Huai's voice, everyone gradually regained clarity amid their shock. Medea furrowed her brows in thought.
“A way… a way… Most methods wouldn't work in this era. That black muck has an aura of Chaos, and ordinary magic can't hold it back, unless… unless you reverse the flow of the Spirit Veins!”
“Spirit Vein reversal?”
“Yes! Ryudou Temple's barrier is designed to repel Spiritual Bodies, so reversing the Spirit Veins could also reverse the barrier's effect from repelling to containing! That black muck isn't a real substance, it's a sort of imaginary matter, akin to a Spiritual Body; theoretically, it should be stopped! But there are some problems…”
“What problems?”
“Reversing the Spirit Veins would cause irreversible damage to the Earth's Spirit Veins and could even destroy them.”
At this, Medea glanced over at Rin Tohsaka.
“Plus, we'll need the blood of the custodian of this land… ah, no, not to kill you, just a little bit.”
“Ah?”
Rin Tohsaka paled when she heard Medea's words, taking a step back.
“Wait, you mean to say, reversing the Spirit Veins will completely destroy them?”
“Of course, it's like making someone's blood flow backwards in their body, it naturally brings unavoidable damage. And it depends on how long the Spirit Veins can hold; if too long, the entire vein might be ruined.”
“…………”
Hearing this, Rin Tohsaka's expression grew even more troubled. Just like land was the lifeblood of a farmer, the Spirit Veins were vital to magicians, but now… it seemed there was no room for choice.
“I understand, what needs to be done?”
“First we need to go to the Tohsaka family's Magic Workshop, where the foundation that controls the Spirit Veins is located. We'll need to access the Spirit Vein pathways, gain control, and then…”
However, before Medea could finish her instructions, an even more astonishing thing occurred.
Under their watchful eyes, the black muck erupting from the mountaintop like lava began to writhe, and then, one by one, pitch-black creatures with wings emerged and flew towards Fuyuki City!
“What are these things?!”
“Now's not the time to talk about this!”
Duanmu Huai made a decisive decision.
“Medea, you and Alice Phil, Mash, along with the miss from the Tohsaka household and Sakura, go back to Tohsaka's house to reverse the Spirit Veins. Everyone else, follow me; block these monsters, we must not let them enter Fuyuki City!”
“ARCHER, you too, it's enough with me, Sakura, and ASSASSIN here.”
Rin Tohsaka made her decision, and ARCHER nodded silently, then stretched out his hand and summoned a longbow.
“Safe travels, MASTER.”
“And you, ARCHER.”
Rin Tohsaka left these words and turned away without looking back, only to see Medea extend her hands as an Array swiftly enveloped them, then they vanished in the blink of an eye. Duanmu Huai also grabbed onto Lorena and leapt up, rushing towards Ryudou Temple together with ARCHER.
Fortunately, Ryudou Temple was deep in the mountains, relatively far from Fuyuki City. The problem was that the temple was on the residential side of Fuyuki City. This meant the monsters would naturally target the citizens–who were mostly asleep at home due to the late hour–first as they stormed the urban area.
Logically, with so much happening in Fuyuki City, the residents should have already left their homes to check on the situation. However, that was not the case because of the earlier Blood Temple incident, which had robbed most of the citizens of their magical power and souls, putting them in a deep coma. Though it was unfortunate, one couldn't help but admit that having no one in the way did make things somewhat more convenient.
The enemy at hand, though, seemed far too numerous.
“Wow, I never expected there to be so many enemies.”
Duanmu Huai, Lorena, and ARCHER crossed the Fuyuki Bridge and arrived on the school rooftop at the foot of Ryudou Temple, looking upward to see hundreds, if not thousands, of monsters with flapping wings soaring through the sky, moving towards Fuyuki City.
“What are we going to do? Just the few of us probably won't be able to stop that many monsters.”
ARCHER raised his longbow, aimed into the sky, and then released an arrow–a brilliant arrow of light streaked across the night sky and exploded in an instant, swallowing a large swarm of monsters.
But it wasn't long before more monsters emerged from the black mud, filling the void left by ARCHER's attack.
“What a hassle… No choice then, time to call for backup!”
While saying this, Duanmu Huai's fingers flashed with Soul Cards, and with a burst of light, Ogis, Ann, Greiya, and Felin appeared before him in an instant.
“Master?”
“Whoa, it's so late, what do you need us for?”
In response to Duanmu Huai's summoning, Ogis merely tilted her head, looking curiously at Duanmu Huai. However, Ann was a bit embarrassed; clearly, the Princess had been called upon by Duanmu Huai while she was in bed, now hurriedly half-dressed with even one knee-high sock missing.
Greiya, on the other hand, fared a bit better.
As for Felin, she was in her pajamas with a sleeping cap on, clutching a laptop, looking like she was up late gaming and had been reluctantly called by her parents to go to bed.
“What's going on?”
“What's going on? Of course, it's time for you to fight.”
Faced with the girls' complaints, Duanmu Huai rolled his eyes in annoyance.
“Alright, get to it, we absolutely cannot let them enter the city!”
“………..I knew it was going to be bad news.”
Though Ann complained, she quickly grabbed her Sorcerer Book and flipped it open. Heavy clouds swiftly coalesced, covering the entire sky, and as Ann uttered a reprimand, thunder and lightning roared down, enveloping the monster army in front of them.
At the same time, Greiya and Felin took a deep breath and in a matter of moments, two Giant Dragons, one black and one white, leaped into the sky.
Dragon Roar became scorching flames, intertwined with bone-chilling coldness, sweeping towards the enemy. The dark, winged monsters had no means to resist the ferocious Dragon Breath. They flapped their wings in desperation to escape, only to be turned into ice or burnt to ash by the ensuing Dragon Breath.
Ogis didn't stand idle either; she raised both hands, and invisible threads morphed into a barrier resembling a fishnet, covering most of the city. The monsters screamed as they dived from the sky, passing through the barrier–then getting sliced into pieces and vanishing into nothing.
“AAAAAAAAAAA—————-”
However, just then, a cry rang out again–this sound seemed to lack any aggression, but hearing it made Duanmu Huai frown.
“What in the world is that noise?”
“Let me check.”
ARCHER leapt and landed atop a water tower, looking in the direction of Ryudou Temple, and then his eyes widened.
“On the black mud… there's a woman!”
“A woman?”
“Yes, white hair, horns curling atop her head, and wait–this is… Tiamat?! How is that possible? Why would Tiamat be here?”
“Care to explain?”
Duanmu Huai, not in the mood to decipher riddles, insisted on a straight answer.
“The Mother of Demon Beasts, Tiamat, yes, that's definitely her–the horn symbolizing the earth, eyes reflecting the primeval sea, that's the creator God Tiamat, the primal womb abdicated after creation–that explains the abundance of demon beasts; Tiamat is the mother of life itself, a factory capable of endlessly producing demon beasts!”
ARCHER rambled on, but for Duanmu Huai, there was only one crucial point.
“So you mean, if we take her down, all of this ends, right?”
“It's impossible to kill her!”
ARCHER shook his head gravely.
“Tiamat does not have the 'death' concept; no matter what is done to her, she will not stride towards the death of life. As the mother of all life currently existing, our very lives affirm her existence. As long as there is life on this earth, Tiamat will not die!”
“Hmm… huh?”
Why does this sound so familiar?
Good lord, is this thing some bootleg version of the Chaos Evil God?
“So you're saying, if all life on this planet were to perish, she would just die willingly?”
“That's the theory, but…”
“What yeah, that's much simpler.”
Hearing this, Duanmu Huai relaxed quite a bit, then grasped the War Hammer.
“Then, I'll leave this side to you all, pour the drinks, I shall return momentarily!”
Leaving behind these words, Duanmu Huai gripped the War Hammer and leaped forth, charging towards Ryudou Temple!
