Chapter 1111: Chapter 761: Late Night Attack Chapter 1111: Chapter 761: Late Night Attack Nightfall descended.
With the last ray of sunlight vanishing at the horizon, the entire room was enveloped in shadows. Mash lit an oil lamp and placed it to the side while Duanmu Huai stood by the window, gazing out.
The whole town seemed to fall into silence with the onset of darkness, as if it still held on to the old ways, toiling at sunrise and resting at sunset. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the working folk began their trek home. Once night truly set in, the town was dead quiet, hardly a human sound could be heard, and the dimly lit streets were devoid of any lamps, save for the sporadic flickers of light within the houses that added a touch of life.
A touch of life… huh?
Stationed at the window, Duanmu Huai stared intently outside. Since arriving at this town, he had also tried to feel its pulse in his own way. However, for Duanmu Huai, he hadn't noticed anything out of the ordinary about the town. It was evident to the eye that such a backward town could not exist in modern civilized society, but when he tried to sense beyond what his eyes could see, everything seemed normal.
Maybe this was the anomaly that Medea had sensed.
“Beep beep, beep beep…”
Just then, Mash's communication device suddenly rang. Duanmu Huai looked towards Mash, who hurriedly opened the communicator, and Doctor Roman materialized from it.
“Oh dear, I didn't expect it to be night over there. Has something happened?”
“What's the matter?”
“Just now, Chaldea detected the emergence of a Singularity. I was wondering if you might know something about it.”
“A Singularity? Here?”
“Yes… that's right.”
Doctor Roman checked the time again and nodded.
“Indeed, right at your location.”
“We are investigating. We'll handle it after we figure it out.”
“Alright, I'll leave it to you then…”
“Wait.”
“Is there something else?”
“How much time has passed for you?”
“You mean, the time?”
Faced with Duanmu Huai's question, Doctor Roman hesitated for a moment.
“About a day, I guess.”
“Okay, I got it.”
Duanmu Huai nodded, gesturing for Mash to close the communication.
A day in the sky, a year on the ground, huh? That could be said.
“What's going on, MASTER?”
It was Mash who seemed confused now.
“Doctor Roman says only a day has passed in Chaldea? But a year has passed for us?”
“That's quite normal. The flow of time isn't equal between the two sides. For Chaldea, as observers of the future, they primarily observe significant temporal nodes. It's like reading a book; the book records only important dates and times, not every single detail of daily life like a diary.”
Duanmu Huai shrugged. It's the same with storybooks. For instance, if you write about a group of Adventurers delving into a cave, you'll write about the dangers they face, not every tiny detail like eating at 3 o'clock, arguing at 4, using the restroom at 5, scouting at 6, and drinking at 7…
But for those 'in the book,' they can only move forward step by step in time.
It's not like they can just open their eyes and leap from autumn to spring, unless they are Detectives.
“So, you're saying this is an important Singularity?”
“At least one worthy of Chaldea's observation.”
As Duanmu Huai spoke, he looked out the window.
“Oh, the show is starting.”
“Huh?”
It was only then Mash noticed, the previously pitch-black town was now lit ablaze with red hues. She stood up and looked out the window, then gasped in surprise–outside the window, hundreds of townspeople carrying torches surrounded the inn completely, causing a loud commotion, seemingly filled with rage.
“What happened?”
“We'll know soon.”
Duanmu Huai hummed lightly as he spoke. True enough, shortly after, heavy footsteps approached, and their room door was violently kicked open. Several men dressed like Sheriffs, wielding spears and scythes, entered and glared angrily at Mash, as though she was their archenemy.
“What do you want?”
Gazing at those townsfolk staring her down, Mash couldn't help but feel fear. Not because she couldn't handle them, but it was the unfounded fear of the unknown that unsettled her.
“Damn Witch!”
However, the lead man clenched his pitchfork and bellowed with gritted teeth.
“You killed my child, I want your life in return!”
“Child? Wait a minute… what are you talking about?”
Mash took a step back, and all the while, Duanmu Huai only folded his arms and stood aside, curiously observing the scene. It was then another man dressed as a Priest stepped forward, fixating his gaze on Mash and spoke.
“No need to pretend any longer, Witch, we know everything. Did you meet with a child today?”
“You mean that boy?”
At the man's question, Mash paused, suddenly recalling that there had been a little boy outside her room watching her as she entered.
“I just greeted him…”
“Silence! Evil Witch, you've cursed him with your infection, and now the child has fallen gravely ill, his life hanging by a thread! This is all because of your Curse!”
