Chapter 1069: Chapter 737: Holy Grail War Chapter 1069: Chapter 737: Holy Grail War “Who are you?”
Looking at the blue-haired man before him, Duanmu Huai asked, as the latter chuckled.
“I am a Heroic Spirit participating in this Holy Grail War, CASTER. Pleased to meet you, the two of you.”
“Holy Grail War? What is that?”
“You don't know, MASTER?”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's question, Mash looked at him with surprise.
“The so-called Holy Grail War is a battle where seven magicians, known as Masters, summon the souls of historical heroes to fight each other until only one remains to claim the Holy Grail…”
“What kind of Pokemon tournament is this?”
After listening to Mash's explanation, Duanmu Huai curled his lip in disdain. Fighting to the death for a Holy Grail that could supposedly grant any wish seemed utterly pointless. Besides, he didn't believe in such nonsense–if it could really grant any wish… Well, if it could help him smash The Emperor's head, he might just believe.
“So, the one who attacked us earlier was also a Heroic Spirit?”
“Correct.”
The blue-haired man nodded.
“This was supposed to be a standard Holy Grail War, but I don't know when it started to go awry.”
“Go awry?”
“I don't know the specifics, but as you've seen, the entire city was engulfed in flames overnight, humans vanished, leaving only the Servants, and the Masters were nowhere to be seen. Then, the one who initiated the conflict again was SABER. She consecutively eliminated ARCHER, LANCER, RIDER, BERSERKER, and ASSASSIN. Those Servants defeated by her, just like the ARCHER who attacked you earlier, seemed corrupted, becoming servants of SABER.”
At this point, the blue-haired man spread his hands.
“Before meeting you, RIDER and ASSASSIN had already been dealt with, leaving only ARCHER, BERSERKER, and LANCER standing with SABER. If we defeat them, then the Holy Grail War will come to an end.”
“So, you're saying, take out that SABER, and this world's troubles will be solved?”
Duanmu Huai wasn't interested in magical theories–in short, knowing this was enough.
“Pretty much, which is why I said it's great to have strong comrades.”
“Then, do you know where SABER is?”
“Of course.”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's question, the blue-haired man nodded.
“Just follow me, and you'll see.”
“It seems we don't have much choice.”
Duanmu Huai swung his War Hammer, resting it on his shoulder.
“All right, lead the way.”
And so, under the guidance of the blue-haired man, Duanmu Huai and Mash made their way along the devastated roads. All the while, the blue-haired man was incessantly babbling non-stop.
“But really, when you think about it, what an odd pair you two are–the lady here is a Demi-Servant, and you are… a Master? You look more like a BERSERKER to me.”
“What's a Demi-Servant?”
Duanmu Huai looked at Mash, who seemed hesitant.
“Ah, sorry, senior. I have not explained it to you before. Actually, to investigate the Singularity, Chaldea had prepared Heroic Spirits in advance. When we were undergoing the Spirit Particle Conversion, that Heroic Spirit appeared before me and proposed a contract. He offered to transfer his Heroic Spirit abilities and Noble Phantasms to me. In exchange, he wanted me to eliminate the cause of the Singularity. It's with that power I was able to return to my original form.”
“I see… you're possessed by a god, then.”
Having heard Mash's answer, Duanmu Huai nodded. He had been curious before, as Mash had seemed half-dead and then was suddenly bursting with energy. It turned out she had made a contract to become a Magic Girl.
“However…”
“However?”
“I'm sorry, senior, but I can't use the Noble Phantasm yet.”
“What is a Noble Phantasm?”
“It's the weapon used by a Heroic Spirit.”
Hearing this, the blue-haired man couldn't help but jump in to explain.
“A weapon? Isn't that what she's holding? That huge shield looks pretty handy to me.”
“No.”
Mash shook her head.
“This shield has not yet revealed its true form. Simply put, its abilities as a Noble Phantasm haven't been activated yet; it is just a simple shield for now.”
“So, you mean it's like some sort of ultimate move, right?”
Understanding Mash's explanation, Duanmu Huai got the gist immediately.
“No worries, take your time. It's not a big deal… Huh?”
As he was speaking, Duanmu Huai suddenly felt something blocking him upfront. He turned around and saw that several iron chains had appeared out of nowhere, completely obstructing their path.
“What's this supposed to be?”
Duanmu Huai eyed the chains suspiciously, then grabbed them firmly, intending to snap them apart. However, upon seeing this action, the blue-haired man and Mash's faces suddenly turned pale.
“Wait, don't touch it!”
“Whoosh!!!”
Yet, before their words could even settle, the chains snaked forward like a venomous serpent, swiftly coiling around Duanmu Huai's arm.
Simultaneously, a deep voice resounded.
“Ahahaha… I truly did not expect to catch new prey. How interesting…”
“Heh, who's the prey, that's still up in the air!”
Despite the chains wrapped around his arm, Duanmu Huai was unconcerned, and instead grasped them with his free hand and pulled with force!
“…….Ah!”
Accompanied by a scream, a woman entirely shrouded in a cloak was forcibly yanked from thin air by Duanmu Huai, who then slammed her down like a meteor hammer, then leaped up, clenched his right hand into an Iron Fist, and smashed it down onto the woman's head!
“Bang!!”
The next moment, Duanmu Huai's Iron Fist burrowed into the ground, and when he lifted it again, it was smeared with scarlet blood. The headless corpse of the woman twitched a few times before dissipating into particles of light.
“Is this that so-called Heroic Spirit?”
Raising his fist, Duanmu Huai looked at the slowly vanishing corpse, then turned his head to look at Mash and the blue-haired man.
“……That's it?”
Witnessing the scene unfold, both Mash and the blue-haired man were rendered speechless.
Heroic Spirits were supposed to be projections of heroes from the past, possessing immense combat strength that, in theory, modern Masters could not contend with. After all, ancient magic and battle prowess far exceeded the modern era. Nevertheless, Duanmu Huai completely overturned their expectations. Although they thought he seemed strong at first glance, they never imagined that he could fight this well–to the point where he outright obliterated LANCER, considered one of the weaker combatants in a head-on fight, with a single punch!
What kind of monster was this?
“Be careful!”
Before they could even share their musings, they witnessed a muscular, half-naked man, almost as tall as Duanmu Huai, wielding a Stone Axe, rushing towards him with a roar!
“MASTER!”
At this sight, Mash also screamed, but Duanmu Huai faced the sudden adversary without any fear. He didn't even care for the Stone Axe swinging at his body, instead lifting the Thunder Warhammer and smashing it down upon the man's head with might!
“Bang!!!”
The Stone Axe, capable of chopping down a large tree, struck Duanmu Huai at the waist, but he stood firm as a mountain. His Thunder Warhammer roared as it plummeted down, crushing the brawny man to the ground.
Next, Duanmu Huai lifted his right foot and stomped down hard on BERSERKER's head!
“Splat———!!”
The enormous head burst like a smashed melon under Duanmu Huai's foot.
The ordeal wasn't over, however, as the headless body suddenly reached out and grabbed Duanmu Huai's leg. At the same time, the burly body abruptly stood up, its head miraculously reconstituting at an inconceivable speed.
“Watch out! He's Hercules!”
The blue-haired man also urgently shouted at that moment.
“His Noble Phantasm is the Twelve Labors; unless you kill him twelve times, he absolutely won't die!”
“Won't die?”
Hearing this, Duanmu Huai sneered.
“I want to see if it really won't die!”
As he spoke, Duanmu Huai's body shook, breaking free from BERSERKER's grasp, who then let out a mad roar, leaping high with the Stone Axe raised, targeting Duanmu Huai. Duanmu Huai shouted in response, lifting the Thunder Warhammer to meet the assault.
This was akin to a duel between a hurricane and a towering mountain, with the Stone Axe-wielding BERSERKER resembling a frantic tornado, seeking to completely rip apart everything in its path. In contrast, Duanmu Huai stood like a lofty, unyielding mountain, swinging the Thunder Warhammer without stepping back, despite the hurricane's onslaught. The clash of the Stone Axe and Warhammer released sounds that reverberated through the hearts of all who heard them.
“Boom!!”
They clashed once more, BERSERKER's Stone Axe shattered at the impact, while Duanmu Huai continued his onward assault with a loud cry.
To Duanmu Huai's surprise, instead of dodging the incoming Warhammer, BERSERKER reached out with both hands, catching it with a grasp and flip, firmly holding on to the Warhammer!
“If you want it that badly, take it!”
While BERSERKER's fighting style was unexpected, Duanmu Huai appeared to be completely unfazed. Without hesitation, he let go of the Warhammer, reached behind with his left hand, and with a roaring sound, thrust forward the Chainsaw Sword, which spun into action, tearing through BERSERKER's flesh and piercing his chest!
Immediately following…
“Buzzzz———!!!”
Black Flame erupted, the Chainsaw roaring violently as it cleaved BERSERKER's body in two. Duanmu Huai bellowed, pushing down forcefully with the Chainsaw Sword, splitting BERSERKER in half!
The explosive Black Flame shot skyward, engulfing BERSERKER completely in the blink of an eye.
Only then did Duanmu Huai pick up the Warhammer that had fallen to the ground, turning to the stupified Mash and blue-haired man and spreading his hands.
“That was pretty average, no big deal at all.”
Following that, he spoke.
