Chapter 1065: Chapter 734: Suspended Death Sentence Chapter 1065: Chapter 734: Suspended Death Sentence Finally, the people of Beautiful Star had dodged the imminent catastrophe–within the time limit demanded by Duanmu Huai, they had managed to revert to their original forms at the fastest speed possible. It was an exceptionally difficult task. Fortunately, that world had enough gender-changing hospitals and clinics, otherwise they would probably have faced certain death.
But this did not mean Duanmu Huai was ready to let them off the hook just yet.
“Dispatch a warship here to keep watch; any hint that those idiots are thinking of making a comeback, just smash them with a Whirlwind Torpedo,” he said.
Yes, for Duanmu Huai, this was merely a change from an immediate death sentence to a two-year suspended death sentence, which he might consider converting into life imprisonment if their behavior during the probation period was satisfactory.
However, Duanmu Huai did not think the planet was that lucky. He had sent a fleet to completely blockade the planet, meaning its civilization would never have the chance to venture into space.
Though somewhat cruel, in Duanmu Huai's view, it was a very reasonable precaution.
Not having annihilated them on the spot was already magnanimously lenient.
Exhausted, everyone returned to Arkham City, even more fatigued than they had been from combating Reapers and cosmic monsters.
“I'm thoroughly fed up with those damned freaks,” he said.
Duanmu Huai sat back down in his chair and started complaining helplessly.
“Those damned idiots, stupid morons, this civilization shouldn't even exist. They don't even have the value of being burnt; I think they could only turn into a pile of rotten waste, buried beneath the dirt–maybe even the plants that suck up their nutrients would grow deformed.”
“It's hard to imagine there could still be things like this; I hope my world never turns out this way.”
Mary furrowed her brow, a look of helplessness on her face, perhaps because she came from a literary background, she still had some sentiments about it.
“So letting a bunch of people elect a leader is just ridiculous; to become rulers, these people would do anything,” said Ann disdainfully of Beautiful Star's so-called democratic elections.
“That's not something our Tribunal should worry about; we only need to concern ourselves with the threat of Chaos,” Duanmu Huai promptly replied. He was not The Emperor, he did not engage in grand expeditions. What kind of system Beautiful Star implemented was of no concern to Duanmu Huai, but on the flipside, as long as they showed any sign of provoking Chaos, regardless of their system, Duanmu Huai would deal with them.
Of course, Duanmu Huai had another reason for sparing Beautiful Star, using it as bait. Given Beautiful Star's current foolish state, it was only a matter of time before it was invaded by Obsessive Sin. If anything unusual happened on Beautiful Star, Duanmu Huai would know immediately how far Obsessive Sin had expanded its reach. From this perspective, leaving Beautiful Star intact was like setting up an alarm since Obsessive Sin starts with the easiest targets for corruption–thus, the foolish civilization of Beautiful Star was most susceptible to the taint of Chaos.
Complaints aside, Duanmu Huai did not take these matters too seriously; he was bored and once again opened the system to scan through the list of bounty missions.
This was not because Duanmu Huai wanted to undertake missions, rather it was a means to gauge the level of Chaos threats across various galactic civilizations. Like Neverwinter City, which had already been targeted by Corrupted Foil–if he had not intervened, its destruction would have been inevitable, so Duanmu Huai had stepped in to help.
But many missions were only in their inception and hadn't reached the stage where the world was in peril, and besides… not every world was devoid of heroes, right?
Just like in Neverwinter City, where initially the mission failed, yet Kasim and Roxia still ended up finding the antidote, right?
So Duanmu Huai just wanted to see how far these heroes could go–surely, the Tribunal couldn't handle everything.
“Hmm, it seems most worlds still have reliable heroes,” he muttered.
Duanmu Huai glanced at the mission bar, many of which were gray, indicating mission failure, meaning other people had completed them and players could no longer take on those missions. Only a few missions displayed in red–missions that had timed out–implying those worlds had been destroyed before anyone could save them.
Although Duanmu Huai would have liked to clear every single mission, regrettably, he couldn't be everywhere at once; after all, the millions of world missions were too many for one person to handle.
“I still want to find those missions involving alien invasions…”
Duanmu Huai sifted through the mission bar, continuously grumbling. He was still concerned about the second phase of his “Ascension Catastrophe” mission that required the destruction of two races. Initially, he had planned to eliminate the Geassian Yankees, but after acquiring the Geass Silver Sword, Duanmu Huai remembered this wasn't a game where forging divine artifacts opened doors; he had to set it aside for the time being.
“Hmm?”
Just then, Duanmu Huai spotted a mission prompt.
[Human Continuation Assurance Organization Phinis Chaldea is sincerely recruiting suitable Masters.]
[Requirements: Spellcaster (satisfactory)]
[Limit: 1 person]
[Objective: Protect human history, prevent human extinction]
“Well, this is interesting.”
Looking at the recruitment notice before him, Duanmu Huai was taken aback. He hadn't expected there to be another organization with goals similar to those of the Tribunal, and this protection of human history… sounded quite intriguing.
Why not take a look?
Thinking this, Duanmu Huai made up his mind. After all, sharing information was valuable. Since both Chaldea and the Tribunal were fighting to protect humanity, the other party must have some capabilities. After all, making claims about saving humanity and preventing its extinction wasn't something any organization could just declare.
Moreover, since the system had included the other party's recruitment, it definitely recognized the capability of this entity known as Chaldea.
Otherwise, wouldn't any Tom, Dick, or Harry be claiming to save the world?
“I'll go elsewhere for a wander, to clear my mind and see how things are.”
With that thought, Duanmu Huai also greeted Ogis.
“May I join you?”
“Not at the moment, but depending on the situation, I should be able to summon you there.”
Duanmu Huai shook his head. The task was limited to one person, and he wasn't sure whether Ogis counted. To be safe, he'd better go alone first. After all, Duanmu Huai was going with the intention of organizational exchange, eager to see what kind of corporate culture this Chaldea had and what methods it planned to use to protect human history and prevent extinction… to see if the Tribunal could learn anything from it.
Of course, the exact situation would only be known once he arrived.
Thinking this, Duanmu Huai checked the mission list one more time, then clicked confirm.
The next moment, Duanmu Huai suddenly found himself in darkness, followed by a voice resembling mechanical speech in his ears.
“—-Base sequence confirmed as human genome.”
“—-Divine Artifact attributes, confirmed as neutral.”
“Welcome to the archive that tells of the human future, this is the Human Continuation Assurance Organization, Chaldea.”
“Fingerprint authentication, voiceprint authentication, genetic factor authentication completed, checking Magic Circuit… completed.”
“Consistent with registered name, confirmed as a primate.”
“Nice to meet you, you are today's thirty-ninth visitor, we hope you have a pleasant time.”
As the cold, mechanical voice faded away, the darkness before Duanmu Huai's eyes also dissipated, and he saw a pristine white corridor with floor-to-ceiling windows beside him, standing at the entrance of the corridor. Through the windows, he could clearly see the howling, icy wind and the snow-capped mountains outside.
“This place looks pretty desolate, perfect for a murder case or so.”
Duanmu Huai carefully surveyed his surroundings, clearly seeing that he was currently inside a mountain, surrounded by nothing but peaks. He wondered if the organization had intentionally placed their base in this uninhabited snowy mountain, or if this world had already been destroyed, making this facility humanity's last shelter?
Thinking this, Duanmu Huai looked down at himself, dressed in a white, uniform-like outfit, looking like a scientific researcher. However, the location seemed very remote and there appeared to be no signs of human activity around…
Perhaps everyone inside had perished?
Duanmu Huai scratched his head, then began walking forward.
In any case, he'd find out once he walked inside.
