Chapter 1053: 724 Chapter 1053: 724 “Hmm?”
Upon hearing this, Duanmu Huai narrowed his eyes; he felt the juicy part of the story was about to come.
Indeed, the man had discovered that he was now experiencing a very bizarre thirst, akin to that of a vampire's. However, while vampires craved blood, he needed to devour other souls to satisfy this thirst!
Thus, to figure out what exactly had happened to his body, the man embarked on an adventure once again.
Wait a minute, some might ask at this point, wasn't he already the ruler of a fortress? Why would he undertake a journey all by himself?
Well, this is where it gets funny. Afterward, the man had thought about returning to Neverwinter City to seek help. But when he got back, he found that the fortress that was once his had been “re-nationalized,” and he was considered to have perished in the war alongside the Shadow King, long thought dead!
Neverwinter City did nothing but erect a statue of him! They left him nothing else.
“Can you imagine my rage?”
As he spoke, the man's roar grew fiercer, perhaps recalling all that had happened, his anger intensifying at the moment.
“When I returned to the homeland I had fought to protect, it no longer belonged to me! Not only that, they dared to alter my story, my legend, claiming I fought against the Shadow King with my comrades! That's utter nonsense! Those damned bastards! They even built mausoleums for those traitors, those deceivers! I gave them everything, but in the end, all they left me were lies!!”
Understandably, this infuriated the man, and he abandoned any thought of seeking help from Neverwinter City. He had already been darkening a bit after being betrayed by his comrades. Seeing all this before him, he naturally added Neverwinter City to his list of enemies.
But a hero is still a hero. In the end, the man uncovered the truth; the hunger within him was linked to a curse from the Death God Yeg!
Yeg…
At that name, Duanmu Huai twitched the corner of his mouth.
In the Faelun World, where gods battled for supremacy, many rose and fell, but when it came to the most tenacious deity, none could top Yeg.
This was an ancient God of Death with mighty divine power, who had held the divine position since the Netheril era.
However, unlike most deities who were usually killed and then stripped of their divine positions, Yeg retired voluntarily.
Yes, he felt he had been in the role for too long and stepped down on his own initiative, handing over most of his divine duties to Ban, Bhaal, and Myrkul, while he transformed into an attendant, serving each and every God of Death!
To the average person, Yeg's actions were incomprehensible; he was one of the oldest Gods of Death, a deity of immense divine power, his strength no less than that of Suren or Shawl. Yet, he willingly relinquished his divine position. He didn't completely retire but became an attendant instead, which was rather puzzling.
It was as if a department manager voluntarily demoted himself to a clerk, for reasons known only to himself.
Nevertheless, according to player investigations, this old guy was anything but idle.
Though he appeared wholly diligent on the surface, if the reigning God of Death was not to his liking, he would find a way to covertly meddle, resulting in their demise, followed by his choosing a successor.
For example, after Myrkul took over Yeg's position as God of Death, he was then killed in Deepwater City during the War of the Saints. Next up was Sherrick, who inherited the role, but Sherrick was an absolute lunatic. Yeg, seeing that this moron was incompetent, secretly orchestrated a rebellion, enabling Kelanwo to overthrow Sherrick and pass the God of Death's divine position to Kelanwo.
So you see, amidst the coming and going of Gods of Death, Yeg remained steady as an old dog, and it was quite clear who really had the staying power.
Yet, it was this same steady old-timer that inflicted upon the hero an unimaginable vampiric curse.
