Chapter 1012: Chapter 698: Star Language_2 Chapter 1012: Chapter 698: Star Language_2 At the time of publication, Shirley still remembered how the Fog City Times had almost daily book reviews, fundamentally split into two camps. One side regarded Mary's novel ending as excessively cruel and misaligned with mainstream values. Furthermore, they argued that if an organization called the Tribunal were to act on such values, it too would meet its destruction.
The other side simply sneered at this, praising Mary for interpreting the concept of humans and the universe from a brand-new perspective, after all, “strangers are naturally suspicious”. People might look similar on the same planet, which is fine, but why bother being so courteous with alien races that not only look different but also have entirely different bodies? Moreover, at a time when the race's survival was at stake, shouldn't humans be protected rather than sacrificing them for the sake of alien races?
Gradually, the discussion expanded beyond just book lovers and the science fiction literary scene; it turned into a serious topic on how humans can coexist with other races in the universe, with more and more people getting involved. Even within Masters College, plenty of professors and teachers argued ceaselessly over it.
Reporters had also tried to track down Mary, the author, to ask for her thoughts, but unfortunately, they couldn't find her–they naturally couldn't find her because while they scoured the entire Fog City, Mary was off adventuring beside Duanmu Huai, not caring about the paparazzi's opinions.
During that period, Shirley and Asherica were incredibly worried about Mary; many people who couldn't win arguments would vent their frustration on the author, and being a woman, she was already at a disadvantage. All sorts of sarcastic and dirty attacks were hurled at her, and just reading the daily newspapers could enrage them enough to consider jumping off a building. They feared Mary might contemplate suicide over it.
Mary had said she was fine, and because she called them every now and then to report that she was safe, they suspected that Mary might have just gone somewhere else to hide.
Now, looking back, she had indeed hidden away–just in a place far beyond their expectations.
But if all this was true, then the Tribunal…
Shirley looked at Mary with some concern. From Mary's writing, Shirley could tell that the Tribunal was a cold, cruel, and powerful organization. They viewed humans as the supreme existence above all else and perceived any race that was different from humans as a threat or potential threat, unreservedly using any means to exterminate them. Frankly, when Shirley first read the book, she had only felt fear and dread, but now, standing in this resplendent hall, she suddenly experienced an almost enlightening sensation.
It was as if her vision had been broadened, and everything before her eyes seemed different.
Even the Tribunal, which she had previously thought of as brutal and cruel, now appeared sanctified and majestic, as if their existence itself embodied truth.
“Shirley? What's the matter?”
Seeing her friend lost in thought, Mary curiously initiated the conversation, and hearing Mary's voice, Shirley snapped out of her reverie.
“Oh, nothing, it's just that all of this is so unexpected.”
“Yes, the Tribunal does indeed look very grand and magnificent.”
Mary didn't think too much about her friend's odd behavior, knowing that awe at the grandeur of the Tribunal wasn't unique to Shirley.
“So, Mary, what work are you doing here?”
Shirley coughed lightly, seemingly sidestepping to a different subject, while Mary pondered for a moment.
“Most of the time, I'm gathering materials, organizing content for my next novel, and then I go on adventures when Mr. Duanmu calls for me.”
“Adventures?”
Hearing this, Asherica's eyes went wide instantly.
“What sort of adventures? Dangerous ones?”
“Uh… there's some danger, but no need to fear those threats with Mr. Duanmu at our side,” Mary replied with a faint smile.
“And, I've learned quite a lot of new knowledge.”
“Your next book?”
At this point, Asherica became excited.
“Is it still going to be about interstellar stories?”
“This time it's a fantasy adventure story, we're currently fighting in a world with giant dragons, demons, and deities,” Mary said, not minding sharing this knowledge with her friends.
“After everything ends, I'll turn it into a book.”
“Dragons and magic?”
As expected, at this mention, Asherica's eyes lit up.
“Can we go see that world too? I've never seen what real magic is like!”
“…I can take you to see it.”
Mary certainly understood her friends' eagerness, which wasn't much different from her own initial feelings. Any child grown up in Fog City would have heard similar stories. And now that such a world was truly before them, they would definitely want to experience it firsthand.
But just as Mary was about to take her friends to the teleportation portal leading to Arkham, a flurry of rushed footsteps approached.
“Miss Mary, is it Miss Mary?”
Turning around, they saw a young girl running towards them. She looked like just a child, with eyes tightly closed, her head wrapped in bandages, but she did not seem at all like a blind person, sprinting forward swiftly.
