Chapter 1003: Chapter 693: Autumn Rest Chapter 1003: Chapter 693: Autumn Rest After this, Duanmu Huai had a rare period of leisure; Mortarion was dead, at least for the moment, and Toriel posed no threat. Of course, this was only for the short term, but for Duanmu Huai, having some time now still counted for something.
Although Duanmu Huai was idling in the castle of Arkham like a salted fish, in fact, the entire Tribunal had already started operating efficiently and smoothly.
Lumiaire and Axelle were in charge of monitoring the Star Union. Lumiaire had been lurking in the Star Union network all along, searching for traces that might indicate an invasion by Chaos, while Axelle was responsible for personally investigating–both were originally doing similar work and were quite skilled at it.
Apart from them, other members were also engaged in similar actions.
Hitomi.
This Starseer slave, whom Duanmu Huai initially purchased from a Merchant Voyager, had almost always been invisible, which was normal. Previously, Duanmu Huai, to avoid startling the enemy, strictly forbade Hitomi from using her innate Starseer abilities to infiltrate the Sea of Souls. But now circumstances had changed. The seals were gradually weakening. Mortarion was the first, but he wouldn't be the last Demon archetype to attempt a counterattack on the material world of the Milky Way, so Duanmu Huai lifted the ban on Hitomi. The girl's current job was to meditate within the Starseer court, detecting abnormal fluctuations from Subspace.
After all, even after so many years, the communication methods of the Chaos Fleet had not changed, so catching the spiritual energy response from the depths of the Sea of Souls allowed them to roughly guess what the opposition was planning.
Hitomi also showed great enthusiasm for this task, having spent most of her time learning since she arrived at the Tribunal. Of course, Duanmu Huai had assigned Lani to be this Starseer's teacher. The former had profound knowledge of the universe's star magic and was also interested in the unusual talents of Starseers. As such, Lani taught Hitomi star magic while studying the Starseer's special spiritual energy.
Unfortunately, according to Hitomi, she had not seen that awe-inspiring, all-illuminating brilliance of the Star Torch within the Sea of Souls. The entire Sea of Souls was still dark and quiet, as calm as the ocean under a gloomy night sky.
Monitoring of networks and spiritual energy had been fully activated, and though the Tribunal was unusually calm now, it resembled the calm before a storm. Once any side detected anomalies, this war machine would launch without any hesitation, open fire, and shatter all targets into pieces.
Meanwhile, the Tribunal took advantage of this brief period to start manufacturing warships in large quantities again to replenish those lost in battles with the Reapers and Cosmic Monsters. Of course, there were changes involved, such as Duanmu Huai ordering the energy cores of all destroyers to be switched from antimatter reactors to Contraction Furnaces. Although the energy supply of the Contraction Furnaces was relatively limited, Duanmu Huai was interested in the miniature black holes created by the contraction reactions in these furnaces.
Simply put, if they couldn't beat them, they would send a few destroyers to slip into the enemy fleet through the network and initiate a contraction reaction to create a miniature black hole. Judging from previous battles with Cosmic Monsters, these things served excellently as weapons.
Of course, manufacturing Contraction Furnaces was not easy. Even with the strength of the Tribunal, mass production was difficult. However, Duanmu Huai didn't need to produce something on a mass scale that could blow the Universe's center into a massive black hole anyway…
Well… considering everything, maybe he should also build one to try out?
After all, when facing Chaos, there's no such thing as too much firepower.
Duanmu Huai sat on the balcony, overlooking the scene below. It was early autumn now. Looking out, the trees within Arkham City were a mix of red and green, and many people were walking on the streets, making it look peaceful and bustling.
“This view is actually quite nice.”
Duanmu Huai picked up a cup and took a sip of tea. Ogis sat beside him, staring at the book in her hands, while a melodious violin melody echoed in their ears.
The sound did not come from speakers or a phonograph but from a girl playing the violin on the other side. Mary closed her eyes, her fingers gently moving across the strings, playing a soft and melodious tune.
It had to be said, as a young lady, Mary was indeed talented in many areas. Soon, the music ended, and Duanmu Huai raised his hand and clapped.
“That was a fine performance, Mary.”
“Thank you, Mr. Duanmu.”
Mary set down the violin and smiled shyly at Duanmu Huai.
“It's indeed challenging, but I think I've got the rhythm now.”
“Yes, it's talent, I guess. I could never manage that sort of thing.”
As Duanmu Huai spoke, he spread his hands–Mary's performance here was not merely a spur of the moment thing. In fact, she was now trying out her new occupation.
Bard.
This was an interesting occupation on the Faelun Continent. Its combat ability was average, but it was very versatile. However, what was most interesting was that Bards could use their music to cast spells and skills. Truth be told, this seemingly adolescent yet cool method suited the artistic young lady Mary, so after seeing the performances of other Bards, Mary was eager to become one of them.
