Chapter 1002: Chapter 692: The Unknowable Future Chapter 1002: Chapter 692: The Unknowable Future The galaxy shimmered.
Seated on his chair, Duanmu Huai gazed out at the cosmos. Just moments ago, Aikute had reported to him that all enemy ships had been destroyed. But this was not the end, only the beginning. The wheels of fate began to turn, and the battle between the Tribunal and the Chaos Evil God was about to commence once more.
He had no choice.
Duanmu Huai closed his eyes and took a deep breath. This unfortunate world, this unfortunate identity, if possible, he too would have wished to retire in a serene garden world. But alas, that was impossible. The seals had begun to falter, and the bastards trapped within the Eye of Fear started trying one after another to escape their prison and return to the free expanse of the Milky Way. Like hungry beasts, they would devour all living beings.
But then again, what did it have to do with him?
Duanmu Huai opened his eyes and scanned the system information again.
He was just a player, perhaps if he died, then so be it. Maybe there would be other heroes in this world who would stand up against Chaos, much like the Iron Man Wars, the Horus Heresy, the Black Crusade–justice had eventually triumphed over evil. Maybe without him, someone else would continue to fight against Chaos and eventually win.
But… perhaps he was good at this.
Duanmu Huai admitted that although this world seemed screwed up and dangerous, he felt he was more suited to it. Here, he could pick up the War Hammer and without any reservation, smash the skulls of anyone who dared to stand in his way, smearing their brains on the ground. Maybe he was born for this; after all, even in his original world, he couldn't really do any ordinary job, and for extraordinary jobs… well, even less so.
So perhaps this was better for him now.
Duanmu Huai pulled back his thoughts and looked at the information bar again. Mortarion's death had brought a lot of experience points, but for Duanmu Huai, he wasn't primarily considering the gains at that moment but was more focused on the record of battlefield information–only through these records could he review everything on the battlefield and find better strategies.
After all, fighting a boss as a player and fighting a boss as a deity were entirely different matters.
In the game, players couldn't possibly face Mortarion alone. In reality… well, it wasn't exactly alone for Duanmu Huai either.
Looking at the combat information bar, the first thing he saw was the various auras clashing on both sides.
[Mortarion resisted Fearful Aura–resistance successful]
[Duanmu Huai resisted Death Plague–resistance successful]
[Mortarion resisted The Ancient Whisper–resistance successful]
[Duanmu Huai resisted the Wail–resistance successful]
…………
From the system information, both sides activated their auras at the beginning of the battle, followed by various continuous resistances and immunities. Just as mortals entering Mortarion's domain of poison gas are corrupted into indistinguishable Chaos monsters, so too would mortals stepping into Duanmu Huai's Fearful Aura perish immediately from extreme panic.
If this were on a large battlefield, both sides doing nothing but deploying their auras would already be enough to wipe out all the minor soldiers around them.
However, at their level, countering each other's auras was difficult, and the only reason Duanmu Huai had achieved such a quick victory this time was due to the love from the Dice Lady.
[Mortarion resisted The Ancient Whisper… Great failure]
Indeed, had it not been for this “round” where Mortarion failed greatly in resisting The Ancient Whisper, he wouldn't have been broken so easily, then Duanmu Huai caught the chance to kill him instantly.
Mortarion's experience was divided into two parts, God of Destruction remained level fifteen without an upgrade, but the experience bar had increased by almost half, even more than when he had killed Rose. Old God's Will advanced to level seven, pushing the level of [The Ancient Whisper] aura ability to LV3, and he also gained a new ability.
[Eternal Summons: The Ancient Dominator was, is, and always will be. They roam silently and primordially, not within our known universe but in between, outside of dimension, unseen by humanity (Open your mind, call upon the Ancient Dominators from the far end of the universe to descend)]
This move is really a great weapon.
Looking at the skill description in front of him, Duanmu Huai twitched the corner of his eye. If one day he grew tired of living, he could try using this summoning — by then, whether it was the Chaos Evil God or anything else, let Azathoth devour them all. If everyone is to die, let's die together; indeed, this skill is a good last resort insurance.
But in the battle with Mortarion, Duanmu Huai also had gains. He was surprised to find that, among the three divine positions he held, Old God's Will was the most capable of restraining these Demon Princes.
Thinking about it, it made sense: Demon Princes were ascended via Genetic Prototypes, and their bodies were mostly not part of the real world, but the Subspace. If it were other order-based deities, they might struggle against these Subspace Demons. But it was different for Old Gods — their existence was higher, stronger, and more aggressive in vying for influence over the Subspace.
This was why Mortarion was completely broken after just one major failure; if Duanmu Huai could elevate [Old God's Will], handling other Demon entities would also be no problem. He could simply use [Old God's Will] to break the opponent's defense, then harvest their souls with [God of Destruction].
As for [Pleasure God]… well, it's level was too low; probably only useful for snatching up some souls, and nothing else.
Duanmu Huai then checked the battlefield records again, confirming everything else was normal, before he closed the information bar and shut his eyes. The benefits from eliminating a Demon entity were negligible because of Mortarion's nature; its spoils were useless to Duanmu Huai. Items filled with germs, poisonous gases, and infectious death — even if given to Duanmu Huai for free, he wouldn't want them, let alone using these things which would mean indirectly spreading a father's love.
Maybe someday, that dead fatso would jovially come for him.
Actually, this was the case for any Demon entity kills: big gains in experience, but otherwise hardly any loot or, if they did drop, no one dared use it. Players who used those spoils were generally contaminated by Chaos and then overturned by mobs later on.
Since these spoils only dropped when slaying Demon entity bosses, no one would bother to waste an alt account looting such drops, especially as players strong enough to attack Demon entities already had high levels and equipment; they naturally would not want to waste an account over such nonsense.
Or rather, for Duanmu Huai, it was a relief that Mortarion didn't drop anything; if he had, it would only worry him that the merciful father might have already started paying attention to him.
At least for now, everything was normal.
“It seems I still need to find a way to upgrade the level of the Old God's Will, but I can't do that in Faelun… Hmm, maybe I could try Barto Hell?”
After all, the devils and demons there do nothing but fight all day long.
Duanmu Huai stood up, worked out his body a bit, opened the door, and stepped out of the room, just when he saw Ann coming from the other side of the hallway.
“Ah, Mr. Knight!”
Upon seeing Duanmu Huai, Ann instantly acted as if she had found a target, ran up to him furiously, and began to complain.
“Could you please warn us in advance the next time you summon us? That place was just too stinky! I had to soak in the bath for a whole hour… ugh… I shouldn't smell anymore, right?”
While speaking, Ann sniffed herself from side to side and raised both hands towards Duanmu Huai. Duanmu Huai also lowered his head and took a light sniff.
“No, it's normal.”
“That's good. Honestly, that stench was horrifying. I thought I would never be able to get rid of that terrible smell in my whole life.”
Ann sighed with relief.
“Where's Greiya?”
“Ahahaha…”
Upon being questioned by Duanmu Huai, Ann's face turned red in an instant.
“Greiya… she fainted while soaking, she's resting now, hehe…”
“Did you use the excuse of checking if she was clean to do something unnecessary to her again?”
“Hehehe…”
Watching Ann awkwardly smile, Duanmu Huai shook his head helplessly. He couldn't really figure out what the relationship between Ann and Greiya was; to call them simply best friends didn't feel right as sometimes Ann was extra affectionate towards Greiya. Yet, if you were to say their relationship was something more, it didn't seem that way either. At least for Ann, she seemed to just enjoy taking advantage of being a girl herself to exploit Greiya a bit.
Looking at the Sorcerer Princess before him, Duanmu Huai suddenly thought of something.
“Ann.”
“Hmm? What is it?”
“Have you ever thought about the future?”
“The future?”
“Yes, the distant future, after a hundred years, a thousand years, maybe even longer?”
“Uh…”
Upon hearing Duanmu Huai's question, Ann furrowed her eyebrows and pondered for a moment.
“I've never thought that far ahead. I think we can just deal with future issues when they come.”
“So, do you think you and Greiya will still be like this in a few decades?”
“Of course, I hope it stays the same, but who can say for sure about the future.”
Saying that, Ann giggled.
“I don't know what you think, Mr. Knight, but as far as I'm concerned, as mortals, we can only 'hope' for the future and then try to make those hopes happen. Whether we actually meet those hopes, well, we'll see when the time comes.”
“That sounds quite princely of you.”
“What do you mean sounds? I am a princess, after all.”
Seeing Ann puff out her cheeks, Duanhuai smiled and reached out to pat her head.
“Indeed, we'll think about the future when it comes.”
Duanmu Huai nodded.
“Let's head back to Arkham first.”
Then, he continued speaking.
